@alkali_layke I think I remember either Dean or Alec or Aleco raving about that. Or maybe Brenden.

@Celestalon @alkali_layke I think it was dean who originally recommended it but im about half way through myself and have been enjoying it so far! Only complaint is that the writer uses a lot of rare English words that I’ve never heard of which make me feel dumb.

@AlecoGereco @Celestalon I'm so glad you said that! I'd consider myself fairly "well-read" and often (okay a lot) I'm like wtf? It's odd because the rest of the style is more casual. It's like pouring a bowl of honey nut cheerios and finding a few fruity pebbles. Weirdly misplaced, but not unwanted.

@Celestalon @alkali_layke I'll add that I'm about halfway through and loving it so far, but it does assume a very low understanding of gaming history

@efreed52 @Celestalon I didn't think the author went too deep on the history. A reader could absorb the points and not choose to research and be fine w/o the need to understand. Personally I did need to look a few things up

@alkali_layke @Celestalon Maybe history is a bad choice of words, but I've noticed a couple of times that I was reading explanations of what like donkey kong or duck hunt is.

@efreed52 @Celestalon Oh! Haha! Yes! It makes me feel so old to read things like that, but I guess younger readers might not have that knowledge.

@alkali_layke My wife’s favorite book of the year. I read one chapter and was so triggered I had to put it down.

@themattlondon Okay, but the pacing of the first chapter is the worst. But I'm guessing that wasn't what triggered you

@alkali_layke No it felt like a direct attack on me personally lol

@ChelseaCurls @Sunset_SC2 I'm already halfway through but would love to discuss.

@alkali_layke I loved it. I’m a sucker for video games and love, so I was the target audience. Also fun fact: my parents owned a pizza restaurant with an arcade full of machines I had all the high scores on in the 90’s. Many hours alone in the arcade was how I fell in love with games…

@RiotIksar Aww I love that! Related to your fun fact but different: I grew up very poor so for many years we didn't have a washing machine. I spent Saturdays in laundromats with my mom washing our clothes for the week. But, there was arcade games! I was not a high scorer, but it was fun.

@RiotIksar So anyway...same! That part of the story was very relateable.

@alkali_layke I had a lot of fun reading it, though I suspect some game devs will stick their noses up at it because the author shortcuts some of the realities of game dev. I thought I was close enough to honest to not be bothered, though.

@RiotIksar Now I'm getting grand illusions of a game dev book club 🤩
