Binged Immortality. Holy hell this game has been robbed of some awards. There is a level of depth and intellectualism at work here that is not common in games. You could teach a semester of film and game studies on this work alone. 1/

Incredible performances across the board, with much harder material than normal for a game. Manon Gage is a tour de force with singing, dancing, and a ton of difficult scenes. 2/

Barlow’s genius move isn’t to tell a detective story but to create an environment in which you live as a detective for awhile. Like Obra Dinn and Barlow’s previous games, you have to bang against the evidence and the mystery unravels. You plot out where you want to go next. 3/

There are shocking twists. Terrifying moments. How he paces these revelations in a multitrack interwoven nonlinear narrative is nothing short of magic. It reminded me of Sleep No More, Meow Wolf, and other installation-based narrative art… 4/

Punch Drunk’s work is perhaps the best and most accessible version of this type of theater, but Immortality is a remarkable facsimile. It made me feel immersed, uncomfortable, excited. 5/

A few very light spoilers below: I’ve seen critics call the game’s content “cringe.” That’s an over-simplification of saying the game makes you feel uncomfortable. The Home Screen comes with a page long content warning. In truth, they don’t make movies like this anymore. 6/

Essentially the game depicts the forgotten “erotic thriller” genre across three cinema epochs, with a fourth interwoven as the “behind-the-scenes” story. I was impressed with how well the writing, cinematography, and post processing evoked the era. 7/

It does feel overwritten at times —perhaps the result of needing to give the player time to interact with certain clues within a scene, or my feeling that the films themselves were less worthy of investment than the meta-story at work. 8/

Ultimately, Immortality will stay with me for a long time. What a game! /end
