This is a real issue disguised as an exaggerated tweet. All courtrooms have dress codes, enforced by bailiffs. But judges who handle the matter directly can be sanctioned--even removed--for doing so indelicately. And if we don't, we face backlash. It's precarious! An example đŸ§”. https://t.co/PcPoXENVh8

I was once confronted by an irate court reporter because a young female lawyer was (apparently) sneakily tugging her skirt AAAALL the way up under the table. I hadn't noticed (easel blocked my view) but CR was *L I V I D* and insisted I address it, or she would leave. 😬 /2

The female clerk then complained as well. They suspected I was allowing it on purpose, which created an appearance of impropriety. So I was ethically obligated to address it--which I did, in chambers, with them, the bailiff, and her lead counsel--veeeeery delicately. /3

Some situations arent so complicated, though. I had a defendant on Zoom flash me. I booted her instantly, instructed her lawyer to have a conversation with her client about proper courtroom behavior, and ordered all future appearances for that defendant be in-person. /4 https://t.co/LVOVGe3jiW

What judges find appropriate or not varies wildly. Some are lenient and some are super strict. There is no standard. So we really count on the lawyers to maintain proper decorum and police their own, to not put us into a dangerous and awkward ethical situation like these. /5 https://t.co/203nSXnXqd

Have y'all seen anything in court (yourself, not on My Cousin Vinny!) where you thought an attorney was dressed inappropriately, and do you think the judge responded appropriately? /FIN https://t.co/s5NYadQRN6 https://t.co/4NvX4LBGwy

@JudgeFergusonTX Never saw any judge act on any, but I once saw a pro per roll his bag into court with a bedazzled “STFU” baseball cap on it. I also once forgot my jacket and had to borrow one from a partner who was a much larger man than me. I looked like a little kid in my dad’s suit. https://t.co/7pCoGE29yn
