Heroes eSports Site Standings-- Misleading?

First of all, I want to say I think the website is in general fantastic. Beautiful, easy to see layout. Faster and more organized VODs than I've ever seen for an eSports tournament; ever. But unless I'm misunderstanding the rules, I think there's an issue with the standings.

In the current standings page (see here for NA currently)-- Tempo Storm is listed above Team 8. This is incorrect, because in map scores Tempo is [+1] and Team 8 is [+3]. In addition, Naventic [-1] should be in 7th, ahead of No Tomorrow [-3]. This map score is what I often referred to in StarCraft's Proleague casts as a team's "indicator", as it's a simpler term.

Speaking of Proleague-- here's standings I took from a random 2016 results screen. This screen makes it clear when one team is ahead due to their indicator (KT Rolster has one more map win than JinAir Greenwings in this example). In addition the tie in map scores (and wins/losses) for SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy make them tied for sixth place. The graphic reflects that neither team is ahead. However, in the case of EU's Standings page, Misfits and Team expert are both at an indicator of [+3] but Misfits is labeled as being in first and Team expert in second.

SPOTV's Proleague graphic isn't perfect, either. It does not make it clear the map scores for the teams, just their overall map score. A good compromise is what Liquipedia shows, ALL of that information. Streaks are valuable to have in the graphic (and really cool!). I definitely don't propose getting rid of that. I think adding indicators is essential, though. Especially once we get towards the end of a split; ties in W-L are very likely, and this sort of thing could cause confusion. Hopefully this rant makes sense.

You can't rank teams based on the net wins. Team 8 is indeed ahead of Tempo, and that should be reflected, but they are not [+3] compared to Tempo's [+1]. If after the next day's games, Tempo won another 3-2, and Team 8 lost 2-3, you would not add them together: if you did, you'd think they were tied since Tempo +1 + 1 = [+2] and Team 8 +3 - 1 = [+2]. But Tempo would be in the clear lead.

The rules state that match wins (not game wins) matter over all.

    Tie Breaker Rules

    a) Teams with similar records in the League will be ranked according to the priority chart below:

    1. Match Record
    2. Head-to-Head rating
    3. Number of 3-0 wins in Regular Matches
    4. Number of 3-1 wins in Regular Matches
    5. Number of 3-2 wins in Regular Matches
    6. Tie Breaker Match

It's worth noting that Head-to-Head matters more: if Tempo lost the next match 0-3 (bringing them to 3-5) and Team 8 won a 3-0 (bringing them to 6-0); but then in the next match, Tempo beat Team 8 3-2, Tempo would actually be ahead, despite the fact that their match record is tied (both 2-1) and Team 8's game record is better (6-7 vs. 8-3).

tl;dr the league doesn't work on a point basis, and the information is too complex for Blizzard to show it all on a standings screen, but yes, currently Team 8 would be ahead of Tempo.

This is a good explanation. :) /u/ThePassingShadow and /u/ghostdunk are both right in some aspects.

First thing to address is the streak column. While it's certainly possible that we could do overall game +/- we didn't move in that direction because we wanted a lighter indicator of how a team is doing at a higher level. Due to the nature of Best of 5s we felt that doing a per game total +/- would get two varied.

Second thing, you're right Wolf that the current ranking should go T8 > TS > NVT > NT when we dive into the deeper rules. Honestly it's just easier on everyone if I just go update that, so I will. :)

Thanks for the feedback all :)
