First impression and one request for a Yu-Gi-Oh player
Hey LoR-Dev Team, hey LoR-Players,
I got my invite this morning and played for 6 hours now. Loving it so far, thou I am still learning.
First of all I want to say that the game looks very polished as it is and is super fun! The card art is gorgeous and that the artists are credited is really nice! Almost all of my game where quite close and that is want i am liking the most up until now.
Now to my request. I got stuck on Yu-Gi-Oh in my youth and while I am still activly playing it for more than 10 years it has reached a point where the game got to fast and to negate heavy. At it's current state you often lose if you cant establish an unbreakable field on turn one or negate everything the enemy does to prevent it.
So LoR is nowhere near this point right now, but my request is for the years to come. I thought about it when someone negated my spell with "Deny" in LoR. Up until this point I often canceled my enemies spell by being clever. Killing my unit before they could, increasing stats so conditions are no longer met. And this was a lot of fun because I negated the spell by reading the field and seeing connections between the cards and effects. The negation was my reward.
Now back to "Deny". There is no clever thinking to this card, it just does it's job. And don't get me wrong, the card is fine and surely can exists. My fear is just that power creeping will someday lead to more cards like this and less cards which need to be connected to evade a situation.
Like a card which sets the current health of a unit as its new maximum health so you can evade a spell which destorys a damaged unit, as example.
This might seem like a rant about things which didn't even happen yet but please just take it as constructiv criticism. Because Yu-Gi-Oh has reached a point where a lot of cards would need to be forbidden to slow down again. And trust me, just sitting there for 10 minutes while the enemy is creating a field you can't beat just because you don't play negates feels awful.
LoR is much slower than Yu-Gi-Oh with it's mana system, I know. But power creeping might just get out of hand if one is not careful.
Keep up the good work and thank you for reading! I can't wait for the official release!

this is a really interesting viewpoint. I played a lot of ygo (especially when lightsworn was meta, so im gonna pretend I know everything there is about the game)
imo, deny is a card that has a very low chance of being played. 1) you need an ionia deck 2) you need 3 mana up 3) you need to have a deny
the max number of times you can deny a spell in the game is 3. With 3 deny's you need to pick and choose when to use it. do i deny a mystic shot to save my unit? or do i save it for a late game ruination cancel. I believe that deny is a great way for players to express their skill.
that being said, you're totally right about power creep. we have some incredible designers on this team who are constantly looking at making sure that we control power creep and keeping the meta fresh and interesting. I'm super excited to see the content they'll come up with.
