Can we stop for a second and applaud Riot’s art team?
They’ve created so much fantastic art for this game. Each card comes with an HD card art that not only lives up to the quality we’ve come to expect from League’s splash arts, but also is so incredibly detailed, often expanding on the lore with nothing but the still-frame art itself and really showing off the feelings that each card should elicit.
They’re so incredibly well done and just applause all around to everyone who’s worked on them.

It's an old cartoon where people combine their powers and make a superhero who saves the Earth!

And I can answer (a bit) for what you see in the showcase: we worked with the awesome Unit Image (same studio we partnered with to make the announcement trailer featuring Zed and Darius) to turn the Lux art into a brief vignette.
We had the idea to show the moment of her level up and end on the illustration for the card, and Unit was able to turn that into the more 3D experience you're seeing. There's a lot more technical stuff happening that I'm not savvy enough to explain, but it's a combination of 2D and 3D elements; you'll see that played up even more in some of the upcoming showcases.

It's a partnership but I think both teams deserve props! To give a little more detail into how we work: We have a small team of Rioters that handles a lot of the concept art, narrative & art direction, and feedback. And then we have amazing artists like SMV who do most of the illustrations (and help out with Concept when they can, as well!).
We believe the key to great cards is for Design, Narrative, and Art to all work hand-in-hand in a Captain Planet-sort of way (Young folk, look that up)

I can answer for what you see in-game: The illustrations are 2D on layers, and then we have magicians who can take those layers and make magic happen! For in-game moments, we will also sometimes combine it with some 3D models if it needs it.
