So when a set rotates, we will no longer be able to purchase packs of that set, outside of perhaps a grace period or a special draft?

There will be monthly and seasonal Historic events in addition to things like Historic drafts. The 45-pack bundle will be available for purchase for all Historic sets currently in MTG Arena at the same price.

If we have 3 copies of a card we owned from its time in standard and need a 4th for the deck in the future, what will happen?

If that card is in Standard, you can redeem one wild card for the Standard set version of the card and play with it in Historic play modes in addition to your three existing copies. If you want to make a 4th copy of that card from its non-Standard printing, that will cost two wildcards of its corresponding rarity.

Your answers don't align completely to me. Just to make sure, I understand it correctly:

I have 4 copies of Ixalan Opt. These are playable in any future Standard where the card Opt is legal? Even if I have have 0 copies of [Hypothetical Set] Opt?

That is correct! You can use that non-Standard version of the card within Standard.

i think he means if he already owns ixl/dom opt and opt is reprinted into std later on does he have to waste even more wild cards or can he use his opts he had the last time it was in std

opt being a place holder for really any card that gets reprinted

In this scenario, if you already have the Ixalan or Dominaria Opt in your collection, those cards are ready to play and good to go in Historic.

I get that they don't want everyone to jump to Historic and leave Standard behind but 2 wildcards is pretty steep. Especially if you have to craft Standard and Historic separately for the same card.

In case there was any confusion that hasn't been cleared up yet: If you have a Standard card in your collection already, that card is good to go in Historic play modes with no other additional costs. The two wild card cost is only for versions of cards in non-Standard sets.

We've posted this elsewhere, but for extra visibility on this subreddit, a little more context:

There are a lot of knobs and levers behind the scene we're flipping to try to balance the long term health of the game with player's abilities to craft cards. This is a tough balancing act. This pricing is where the team landed for wildcard redemption, and to offset this, we will be providing other avenues for players to add these cards to their collections such as through Historic events.

How does it work the other way around? If a card from e.g. Ixalan is reprinted into ELD will players have to waste Wildcards for the ELD version to play it in a Standard deck?

In this scenario, the ELD version of the card could be redeemed for one wildcard, and the Ixalan version would be two wildcards. Both versions would be playable in Standard and Historic play modes.

That’s certainly one way to make it actually feel “historic”

I see no reason why not to allow amonkhet and kaladesh however, they’re already developed in client. I wouldn’t enjoy spending 2x as many wildcards to collect the cards, however

They're not off the table. But we'll be focusing on cards over sets for at least the next few releases. That could include individual cards from those sets as Historic wants or needs them, but we’ll also be exploring the best ways to build experiences around them.

Then it is worded poorly in the article, I've seen my interpretation of the text a few times on Twitter already, you might want to update it.

We're updating the article now to clarify this point. We've seen a few people on social interpret it that way, so we're going to fix it!

and if you own a card in Standard you need to craft it AGAIN for historic!

If a Historic card also appears in a current Standard set, players will be able to redeem one Wildcard for one copy of the Standard version, however, the Historic version will still require two. If you already have a card in your collection from Standard, it's ready to play in Historic with no additional costs.
