How forgiving is the game to new players, and is this a good time to pick OW up?
I checked the sub rules but couldn't find anything on this topic, so here goes.
When I say new I don't really mean completely new, I used to play some TF2, had 300 hours in Paladins (please don't lynch me) before my account got stolen, and currently play a lot of R6 Siege which is also a class based FPS.
I always wanted to switch to Overwatch, and now I see that it's on sale I might pick it up. I mostly prefer healer or tank roles, I don't really enjoy "maining" so I always end up rotating what I play, and I don't really know what to expect here.
I also know the game has been out for some time, so I'm worried that the hype might have died down and player count might be dwindling, so I'm not sure if it'll be worth it.
If I do end up purchasing however, what should I expect in the game? For those who played it - how similar is the game's mechanics to Paladins? Will people be helpful to a new player or should I brace for "kys noob retard faggot" messages?
Also how does the loot box system work? Are good cosmetics locked behind paywall or can you get everything as an in-game drop?
Thanks in advance!

I think the game is fun and want you to come play! I'm probably a bit bias though. :)
