Master duel has just received a ban list. It's fairly small in terms of number of cards, but the ones on the list are high-impact. The changes go into effect on February 13th/14th 2023 (depending on your time zone). Let's take a look!

Limited

Change of Heart Card Image Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos Card Image

We have 3 cards that are to be Limited, all of which were previously Forbidden:

  • Change of Heart
    • This card has been Forbidden for a long time, but was brought back to the TCG in May
  • Ancient Fairy Dragon
    • This card has been brought back with the latest TCG ban list, but only from March with a change in card text. Master Duel players will get to play with this new version of the card starting February 14th. We'll talk about the changes in a bit.
  • Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos
    • This card is currently still banned in the OCG and TCG.

Let's talk about Ancient Fairy Dragon. The card has been banned since May 2018 because its effects could be used multiple times a turn, while also allowing you to thin your deck by destroying your Field Spell and getting a new one from the deck. The Errata aims to fix those issues. Here's a before and after of the text:

  • Old:
    • Once per turn: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower monster from your hand. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this effect. Once per turn: You can destroy as many Field Spells on the field as possible, and if you do, gain 1000 LP, then you can add 1 Field Spell from your Deck to your hand.
  • New
    • During your Main Phase: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 Or lower monster from your hand. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this effect. During your Main Phase: You can destroy as many cards in the Field Zones as possible (min. 1), and if you do, gain 1000 LP, then you can add 1 Field Spell with a different name than the destroyed card(s), from your Deck to your hand. You can only use 'each effect of "Ancient Fairy Dragon" once per turn.

Basically, it's effects are all hard once per turn (you can't use that effect if another copy of the card used it that turn), and the Field Spell you fetch must be different from the one destroyed. Needless to say, the card is far weaker now.

Semi-Limited

Spright Starter Card Image

Only one card, and it's not technically even in the game yet: Spright Starter. This archetype will be added to the game when a new pack arrives the same day the list goes into effect.

Upcoming Forbidden/Limited List Update

The implementation of the Forbidden/Limited List is planned to occur on the date listed below.

Please see below for the changes that are going to be made, and our reasoning behind these changes.

Expected date for Forbidden/Limited List implementation

2023 Feb 14

Forbidden/Limited List implementation details

We have compiled the trends and results of Decks used in Ranked Duels, and will limit cards and Decks with outstandingly high usage and win rates in line with their impact on the metagame.

The changes made to the list reflect our aims of preventing Decks from being too difficult to counter, and ensuring the game's tactical element is not compromised by overly short Duels.

*Cards affected by this Forbidden/Limited List will be color labeled as follows: Blue - Cards for which the maximum number of copies has decreased; White - Cards for which the maximum number of copies has increased.

- Cards to be Forbidden

"Change of Heart", "Ancient Fairy Dragon" "Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos"

- Cards to be Semi—Limited

The cards listed below are scheduled to be added to the game, and wilf be on the Forbidden/Limited List at the time of their release.

"Spright Starter"

Our aim with this is to provide a dynamic Dueling experience through the introduction of new cards while also managing the risk and severity of reduced diversity in the game due to these cards' potential popularity.

*Please note that the above cards are not eligible for the Dismantle bonus, as this is different from the case where the number of cards you can set in your Deck is reduced due to an update to the' Forbidden/Limited List.
