A Plague Tale Goes Action-Heavy: Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Hits Game Pass August 27

Xbox has shared a fresh look at Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy on the Official Xbox Podcast, and the big news is that Asobo Studio's next chapter arrives on August 27, launching day one on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass.

So what is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?

Rather than continuing the story of Amicia and Hugo, Resonance takes the franchise back in time and shifts focus to Sophia, the character introduced as a supporting figure in A Plague Tale: Requiem back in 2022. In that game, Sophia helped Amicia and Hugo sail to an island Hugo had been dreaming about, and she survived the events that followed. Asobo's Eric Chort, lead producer at the Bordeaux, France studio, explained that once Requiem wrapped, the team wanted to keep making a Plague game without Hugo and Amicia while pushing itself in new directions and Sophia was, in his words, a "no brainer."

Why the shift to combat and Greek mythology?

The reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 leaned into striking imagery - a minotaur, a maze, and a glowing rope worked right into the game's logo, all nods to the Greek myth of the labyrinth and Ariadne's golden thread. Chort said the team's love of Greek mythology predates any recent pop-culture wave, pointing to inspirations like God of War. The approach mirrors how the studio handled the plague itself: start from a real historical base, then twist it with their own lore. Here, that means grounding the setting in sites and history that can still be seen today across Greece, with Roman and Egyptian influences, and reinterpreting the myth for their own story.

Chort also framed the move to action as something the team had wanted to do for a while. Amicia simply was not the right character for a sword and melee combat, so Resonance became the opportunity to finally build it.

What is the combat like?

Where Amicia was all about avoiding combat - even if she became a capable stealth killer by the end of Requiem - Sophia gets right into your face with a direct style and dual blades. According to Chort, the combat design priorities include:

  • Reactive, responsive controls

  • Smooth, fluid movement when attacking and dodging

  • An agile feel built around Sophia's dual-blade style

Host Jeff Rubenstein, who played through the opening chapters, noted the game does not shy away from action - a sharp contrast to previous entries in the series. He also joked that, at least in the parts he played, there was not a rodent in sight.
