The Switch 2 is right around the corner, and Nintendo will allow us to upgrade our games to run better on the new system. However, not all upgrades are created equally, and this guide is here to help with that transition. Let's get into it!
As of writing, the Switch 2 isn't out yet, so most of the information in this is speculation. We'll update the guide when information becomes concrete and remove this disclaimer.

How Does It Work and How Much
In order to upgrade your games, you'll need to connect your Switch to the internet and download the upgrade for each title. "Nintendo Switch 2 Editions" of games will come with the Switch 1 version of the game and the upgrade pack. It's currently unclear if the pack is just a code in the box or is on the cartridge itself, we'll have to wait until Nintendo confirms it or the games launch.
There are 3 types of upgrades (nomenclature isn't official): Free, Paid, Premium. The prices haven't been unveiled yet, we're getting our numbers by deducting the price of the Switch version from the confirmed price of the Switch 2 version.
Free Upgrades are exactly what it sounds like. You go to the eshop and get the improvements for free. Those are pretty basic and usually only contain better framerates and upscaled graphics, plus support for the Switch 2's unique control scheme.
Paid Upgrades cost money and come with a few more bells and whistles. Aside from the improved visuals, they come with some extra functionality that wasn't in the original version. Those will cost 10 USD or your regional equivalent, and can also be accessed if you have the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass service.
Premium Upgrades are even more expensive than the Paid ones. Aside from the improved visuals, they also come with a good dose of additional content, akin to an expansion of old. Those will cost 20 USD or your regional equivalent.
