Hey all,

We had some unintended downtime this way-too-early morning. Because this kind of stuff always interests me, and transparency can be fun, let's see what went wrong!

Event Log

All times in Eastern.

2:43 AM - Out of Cards goes offline.

2:49 AM - A service unreachable email gets fired off.

This email did not trigger the alerts that it should have. Since we did a site migration a couple of months ago, our tech for that changed and was never tested. Pfft, downtime. That'll never happen!

3:01 AM - The messages begin to hit me on Discord and Twitter.

See, you don't need proper downtime checks!

3:03 AM - Investigation Begins

3:19 AM - Problem Discovered

Our container service decided it wanted to do an automatic update. That really should not have been an issue but because the containers running our site were not set to automatically restart, the site went down.

3:22 AM - Site comes back online

Updates for the service have been disabled - we'd rather manage these ourselves anyway.

What We're Changing

Obviously, our big issue is that our app containers didn't restart themselves. That's shitty and a huge oversight. A configuration change will go out in the morning that will resolve this.

The secondary issue is garbage monitoring of the site. There should be some serious alarms going off when stuff goes wrong. I'll make sure we have better processes in place going forward to notify of downtime.

Hopefully there isn't a next time!

It still blows my mind how we can go over a week without deploying the site yet it always feels like we just deployed yesterday. Anyway, here's today's changelog.

Changes

Runeterra

• Added card subsets.
  • We now flag cards based on two sets. Their primary set (Such as Call of the Mountain) and their expansion (Such as Monuments of Power)
  • If you search for Monuments of Power cards on the database, you'll only see those cards.
  • If you search for Call of the Mountain cards, you'll get COTM and MOP cards combined because they are from the same overall set.
  • We're also including MOP cards within the main COTM set guide.

Bug Fixes

• Fixed the "Has Guide" filter on decks for Runeterra and Hearthstone.
  • Previously, if this was unchecked and you used any other filters on the page, it would not include decks that had a guide, only showing guide=none decks.
  • The functionality is now the indeed of:
    • Has Guide Checked = Only shows decks with written guides.
    • Has Guide Unchecked = Shows decks with and without guides.

The Riot API

We have starter access to Riot's Match API. We've begun collecting some data as a test and are working on formatting it. Here's the phase 1 plan.

• We'll let you tell us what your Riot account name is (Such as Fluxflashor#NA1)
• We'll sync your matches and match data from Riot's API.
• We'll display your matches and give you some basic, personalized stats on a dedicated page.
• We'll give you the option to make your match stats page public. Private is the default.
• All data we will display on the site will be anonymous unless you opt-in to showcase your matches on your public profile.

Phase 2 is more stat details.

• On deck guides, we'll tell you what the winrate of a deck is using data we've compiled.
• We'll let a deck author decide if they want us to publish their personal stats on a specific deck they submit to the site. This would appear above the guide that they may or may not write.

I don't have an ETA on it all. We need to get further approval from Riot to increase our API limits. As of now, we can only collect data for 100 matches every hour, which is the match history for 5 different accounts. It isn't great, but we understand they need to do this.

How in the world is September already over? Jeeze. I was forced to deploy an update out today to hopefully get accepted into the Riot API program for Legends of Runeterra, so there's some stuff in the update that isn't completely finished - touch on that in a moment.

New Features

• New account login and registration pages!
• Added member tooltips.
  • The mouseover of any username on the site will now display a special tooltip. (Sorry, mobile)

Mythgard

• Added a card database. (Not fully implemented)
  • I'm only bringing this up because it is linked on the site.

  • There also isn't any BBCode for them yet.

Hearthstone

• You can now rate card backs!
  • Visit any card back page to give them a rating.

  • Our quotes for different game developers now have special themes.

• Cards database is now linked in the site footer.

• Staff can now designate source links for decks.
  • We've previously used the guide space for this which in turn flags the deck as having a guide.
  • With the new feature, we'll link to relevant tweets or videos that we can get decks from to share here. These links will display in a special box in the same spot a guide would.
• Staf can now more easily flag pro players.
  • This one is for you, Frosty.

Runeterra

• Deck widgets now display deck copy buttons for easier access.

Bug Fixes

General

• Fixed an issue where New Threads on the game portals sorted incorrectly.
• Report buttons no longer display for logged-out users.

Hearthstone

• Fixed an issue with missing "Hearthstone" breadcrumbs on deck pages.

Runeterra

• Fixed the deck widget caching incorrectly.
• Card detail pages now display their card image when linked on Discord or other social platforms as intended.
• Decks on the deck listings can no longer display more than 4 champions. (Decks may still have more than 4 different champions)

Okay, technically it is 2:30 AM on the 17th for me, and most people its the 17th, but since the Pacific coast counts, we're going to pretend it is the 16th.

• Fixed an issue with the portal deck widget showing the wrong game if you switched portals.

Magic the Gathering

• Fixed incorrect default width of cards. Was 240, is now 265.
• Corrected images for Modal DFC cards. Previously the same image was used for both sides of the cards.
• Card BBCode will now prefer a collectible card over a non-collectible.
  • MTG doesn't really have non-collectible cards, save for tokens. However, with the way our data works, Modal DFC (and some other dual-faced cards) have a back and front that is a separate "card" in our database. When requesting these cards in bbcode, we're assuming you will want the front face of the card by default.

Mythgard

• Fixed an issue when browsing Mythgard content that would result in a homepage error afterwards.
  • This was live for a few minutes this past afternoon. Sorry to the couple hundred people who ended up seeing the error.

Flux Notes

Yo! Couple things here.

• MTG Deckbuilder should be out before the end of the month. We've got some big tech choices to get through to make this work well.
• Mythgard support. You've noticed some Mythgard articles today. Thanks to Nirast for helping us cover the game! I'm not going to consider us fully committed to it just yet, which is why it doesn't have a large portal link on all pages, though the game has a great community and we'd love to give players a great home.
  • If there's some free time this month, we'll get a card database up for the title pending datamining and card generation. 
  • If helping cover Mythgard is something you'd be interested in doing as a volunteer, hit me up.
• MTG "stuff" as a whole is still a work in progress. Card pages are still quite bare!
• I'm going to bed now so I can be up for the launch of Zendikar Rising!

A site deploy has gone live tonight with support for Magic the Gathering cards. We've also fixed issues with site cache.

• You can now customize preferences for the homepage deck widget.
• Preferences are accessed on portal pages and the home page via the cog/gear icon found at the top right of the decks widget.
• Selecting a homepage game will force that game's decks to always load on the homepage, no matter where you've been on the site.
• You can customize each game's default deck widget preferences independently.

Notes

• We should have had the ability to sort forum threads in recent threads by their game. There's an issue preventing us from pushing this live and is going to require some serious digging. This was supposed to be a simple change.

Whoa! It's been something crazy like 8 months since we removed decks from the homepage of Out of Cards. Today, that changes.

New Features

Homepage Decks Widget

• Quite possibly the most complicated system we have on the site so far.
• Here's how it works:
  • The current "game" that you have active is what decks will display by default.
  • Decks will show, by default, "Week" timeframe and "Hot" sorting with only decks that include a written guide.
• Here's the planned update for Friday:
  • Adding the ability to customize your defaults.
    • Did you look at some Runeterra news but you only want to see Hearthstone decks? No problem.
    • Do you want to default to Hearthstone Wild Paladin decks? You go!
  • All the sorting options available now will be able to be saved as your own preferences.
• Dev Notes
  • I wanted a more visual approach with icons for Classes and Regions for their respective games, but the interesting issues with cross-platform and cross-device features were prohibitive. Also, Demon Hunter can rot in hell for having such a long name that is tough to design around. I believe it looks cleaner without them all out in the open, at the sacrifice of extra clicks if you want to quickly check multiple classes/regions out. This might be updated in the future to make class selections easier.
  • And on the note of class selections, I already know a request is going to be written somewhere that asks we allow you to customize the filters with something such as "Paladin and Druid decks". This might be a feature enhancement down the line. I'm not making any promises right now though.

  • It is going to take some time to get all of Hearthstone's full art into our database, but it will come with time.

• Card pages now display their artist when we have full art available.

• Deck listing now defaults to the hottest decks on the site.
  • This should have been changed a very, very long time ago. Apologies!
• Deck widgets in news articles and on the portal now display their Shards cost.
• Ruenterra Expansions page overhauled to use images like our Hearthstone one.

General

• Added a link to our Merch store on the navigation.
• Avatars now get resized to a maximum of 180px by 180px.
  • If your avatar isn't a square, it's going to be forced into being one.
  • Unfortunately, we no longer support animated gif avatars because of this. They may make a return in the future.
• Listings on the site now tell you how many results were returned.
  • Admittedly, this needs to look a little bit better since its very plain, but its functional!
• Made an update to our RSS feeds to assist readers in finding our thumbnail images.

• Fixed an issue with collection calculations displaying too many missing stars on deck pages.
• Removed note about how the collection manager can't be automated and replaced it with a link to the HDT plugin.

A site update has gone out today which focuses on revamping our card listing page.

  • Added to deck embeds (news articles, forum posts, comments).

• BBCode no longer renders when quoting a comment.
  • This fixes an issue where you'd receive rendered BBCode when quoting someone and the result was sometimes less than ideal. It also sucked because if you quoted a deck embed, that deck embed would never update again since it lost its BBCode.

• Added missing class header for Demon Hunters in the expansion guide.

A few updates were pushed throughout the day today to support the new Scholomance Academy Hearthstone expansion and more! These updates have come a bit later and earlier than originally planned.

For the Out of Cards site anniversary last month, a large bundled site update was planned to release. Long story short, it was not released due to having some unfinished pieces (including the auto-sync plugin) and things have been very busy which has resulted in further... you guessed it... delays. I decided to push everything that was fully ready today due to the increased expansion traffic and since there were some quality of life updates, it would be helpful for everyone to get them today.

New Features

• OAuth Support
  • We can now let partner services and applications login with your Out of Cards account securely.
  • This is used in our Hearthstone Deck Tracker collection syncing plugin that is currently in alpha testing. More on that in a moment.
• Profile Header Bar
  • A new bar has been added above the old site header.
  • This is where desktop users will be able to access their account-related stuff!
  • Because of this addition, we've made space on the navigation itself that can be used to promote more of our content.
  • Also features an instant search bar (details below)
• New Search
  • Get results instantly without using the search page!
  • Type in a Hearthstone card name and get to its database page quickly. It also works with tooltips!
  • Supports Hearthstone Cards, Runeterra Cards, News Articles, Guides, and Hearthstone Expansion Pages with more to follow.
  • Dev Notes: The search page itself still needs an overhaul because it sucks.

Hearthstone

• Expansion pages now support dual-class cards.
• Deckbuilder now supports dual-class cards (and family cards from Mean Streets of Gadgetzan)
• Card Detail pages will now display multiclass instead of class for those types of cards.

• The Expansion and Mechanics multi-select fields on the Card Listing page have been switched to a better interface.
  
  • Dev Note: Still not happy with our card listing pages. These are going to be updated sooner rather than later.

• You can now see quick links to game portals across the entire site. They have a condensed appearance compared to the previous homepage listings.
• The site background has been updated with card game flair.
• Removed site supporter promotion blocks on sidebars. They have been replaced with new features in the profile header which better promote our Premium offering.
• Premium page no longer mentions our Birthday discount since it has (finally) been deactivated.
• Performance-related improvements on several pages.
• Search Engine Optimization improvements on several pages.

Collection Manager Automatic Syncing

You made it this far. If you want to participate in an alpha test of our automatic collection syncing plugin for Hearthstone Deck Tracker, here's what you need to know. Once we're comfortable with it, a front-page announcement will be made. I want to get automatic plugin updates happening for that.

• You're going to be installing a .dll file into your HDT plugins folder. Browsers will warn you the file may not be safe, as long as you're downloading it from a post or guide created by me, you're in the clear.
• There are no automatic updates yet when a new version of the plugin is released. You'll have to copy the new version over the old one if an update is released. We'll make a dedicated thread for updates when the first one comes out.

Now, onto the fun stuff!

Out of Cards now has an alpha plugin for Hearthstone Deck Tracker. This only works on Windows. It will automatically sync your collection to the site. It will require logging into the plugin through your Out of Cards account so we can sync the data.

• You do not enter your password into Hearthstone Deck Tracker. You will authenticate with our OAuth authentication service via the website itself. Do not share your account password with anyone!
• Syncs will alert you when they happen (each time you enter your collection).
• The site will process your collection update in the order it is received. Sometimes there can be a couple of minutes delay for your collection to fully update on the site.

Interested and on Windows? Let's get it installed!

1. Install Hearthstone Deck Tracker
2. Download the Out of Cards Plugin for HDT. (Click Here) [Version 0.0.1]
3. Move the downloaded "OutOfCardsPlugin.dll" file to "%appdata%/HearthstoneDeckTracker/Plugins"
   • You can copy and paste the path between the quotes above and paste it into your file explorer to get to the right folder.
   • You may need to "unblock" the plugin if your antivirus or windows freaks out about it.
4. Restart Hearthstone Deck Tracker
5. Go to the Hearthstone Deck Tracker Settings Menu
   • Expand the "Tracker" section of settings.
   • Under Tracker, click on "Plugins".
   • Activate the Out of Cards plugin by toggling it.
6. Login to the Out of Cards Plugin
   • On the menu bar of Hearthstone Deck Tracker, click on Plugins.
   • Find the Out of Cards dropdown item.
   • Click on the "Login" submenu option.
     • You will be brought to the Out of Cards website to authenticate.
     • It will state you are logging in and giving the Plugin access to your Hearthstone Collection.
   • After logging in, go back to Hearthstone Deck Tracker.
7. Launch Hearthstone and visit your Collection to have it upload to the site automatically.
   • A toast will appear in the bottom right corner of Hearthstone when your collection syncs successfully.
   • Sometimes, your first load of the collection will not sync. Not sure why, but HDT gets no collection data.
8. Wait for the site to process your collection.
   • We process collections in the order they are received.
   • Once your collection is processed on our end, new collection data will be used across the site.
   • There are sometimes longer than normal delays in processing collections. This is due to us slowly scaling processing based on demand and performance. 
9. Enjoy an updated collection!

Special Notes

• Toasts look ugly, they're purely functional right now. We'll put out an update in the future with something that looks more pleasing though remains small.
• Automatic updates to the plugin itself are not yet available. This will be once we finish the alpha phase of the test.
• We aren't collecting any other data outside of your collection.
  • If we start collecting more data in the future with the plugin, we'll let you know and keep that data collection off by default so you can opt-in to it.
• Some other updates need to be pushed to the site to make collection dust counts appear on the deck listing and on news articles. I know! Hoping we can push this live tomorrow or later tonight.

We've put out a few updates today that focus on fixing issues and performance with the Hearthstone Collection Manager. Also included are fixes for other issues on the site.

• Removed a CSS rule that was causing word-breaks sitewide. This broke the look of several buttons among other things.
• Fixed profile avatars on member pages. No more squish!
• Fixed an issue where certain article folders were not able to be accessed.
• Fixed links to articles inside of article detail breadcrumbs.
• Notification and direct message counts now update on the nav when you view them.

Hearthstone

• Fixed links in the navigation to some class portal pages.
• Collection JSON import correctly won't add extra copies of cards past the cap.

We're playing a little bit of catch-up with today's patch notes, including changes that have gone out previously.

New Features

Hearthstone

• The collection manager now supports importing cards via JSON.
  • If you have JSON from your collection, you can now import it.
  • This is mainly for users of HSReplay that have their collections already synced there.
  • To get your collection data on HSReplay, use the following string inside of your browser's console (F12) while on their site. This will give you a link that you can click to then copy and paste your data into the form.
• Card pages now detail how cards and their golden variants are unlocked.
  • Mainly for adventures and basic cards.
  • We'll use this for other stuff too later on.

Hearthstone Collections have arrived in their first iteration just in time for Ashes of Outland. We'll make this a quick update post.

• You can find them under your user dropdown on the site navigation under "HS Collection".
• You cannot currently share your collection with friends / other community members.
  • We'll be adding an account permission at a later date to enable showcasing your collection to the world. Default off.
• Calculations are performed client-side so we don't murder the servers.

Important Notes

I regret to inform you we don't have a client available yet for automatic syncing of cards. I know this is incredibly disappointing for a lot of you, especially considering there isn't much time before Ashes of Outland hits to input collections manually. To say the last few months have been tight on time would be the understatement of the year.

Also, the goal was to allow you to find decks using the deck search feature on the site by using your collection data. This is not live right now because the site needs to be monitored during a time where there is less traffic (not an expansion launch) so we can stay online. We've had a lot of downtime recently (any downtime is unacceptable to me) and although the problem has been fixed and we won't run into the same issue again, these calculations take quite a bit of processing so I'm not confident turning them on right away. I'll likely enable these calculations for Out of Cards Premium users first, so we can get a better idea at how the site handles them without turning it on for everyone. I don't have an exact date at when this will happen.

New Features

General

• You can now quickly send a direct message to another member via their site profile page or on any of their comments / forum posts - Look for the envelope/message icon!

Hearthstone

• Class Portals!
• We now have dedicated pages for all classes.
• You can find the latest decks, news, forum threads, guides, and more for each individual class. Here's the Demon Hunter Portal.
• These are linked under the Guides section of the navigation. This will go live on Tuesday later in the day.
• Demon Hunters
• Pushed out assets for the new class. Several placeholders for now.
• Added a forum for Demon Hunters.
• Ashes of Outland
• Pushed out some early assets for the expansion. Waiting on Blizzard to reveal official art.

• Added the profile header rewards that were missing from Pi Day 2020.

Hearthstone

• Patch pages will now display collectible cards added in each patch alongside their flavor text. Do note that many of our patches don't have the cards correctly associated with them, so these may not be immediately available. Thanks!

• Card lists on deck pages now showcase the region each card belongs to, like the deckbuilder.
• [145] Deckbuilder now displays a breakdown of the card counts for Champions, Units, and Spells.

Bug Fixes

General

• Fixed the search page search type filter from having the wrong type selected when using the search box in the header.
• [12] Changed "Active Threads" to "Recent Threads" on the forum main page to be more consistent.
• [115] Clicking on a link that "jumps" you to content on the same page no longer covers the heading name or element with the navigation on mobile.
• Navigation animations no longer take so long to complete. Sort of a change and not a bug fix, but the nav has been frustrating for some of us and you so we'll call it a bug =)
• [105] Fixed an issue where you were unable to vote on an object after a comment was posted.

Hearthstone

• Fixed an issue where you could not filter by multiple expansions on the card listing when a single class was selected.
• [67] Database pages with pagination (cards, decks, etc) now have top and bottom pagination. Previously was bottom only.
• Fixed an issue with competitions sorting incorrectly on the competition list.
• Fixed an issue that prevented Demon Hunter decks from saving correctly.
• Fixed multiple issues that could cause the deckbuilder to fail to load cards due to "bad" data being input.

Runeterra

• [67] Database pages with pagination (cards, decks, etc) now have top and bottom pagination. Previously was bottom only.
• [146] Fixed an issue where the deckbuilder was not saving the archetype field to the deck.

Ads

A new set of ads is now active for logged-out users with higher-resolution screens. These ads display on the "rails" of the site. Logging in will remove these ads, though non-Premium users will continue to see the other ads.

If you want to remove ads completely, join Out of Cards Premium.

Changes

Hearthstone

• Added card gallery to Card Design Competitions that have ended.
  • They display on the main page for that competition. 
  • Timers no longer display after a competition is over.
  • A winner must be selected before the gallery will display, so don't expect it to happen right when the finalist voting concludes!
• Card Design Competitions now have a voting progress bar.
  • This displays on both voting and "my votes" pages.
  • It not only displays your progression visually, but also tells you how many submissions there are in total.
• Added a new bbcode for cardbacks.
  • We're not displaying this in the editor because it isn't something that will be commonly used. It was mainly added for staff to use in news articles and guides.

Bug Fixes

General

• Fixed an issue where rating stars would not update until a page refresh if you decreased your rating.
• Fixed an issue with the Google Docs formatting removal not working as intended on TinyMCE

Status Update

Just putting out a small status update since I'm not certain when a monthly letter talking about the site is going to go live.

A desktop client is being worked on. Expecting to launch alongside Hearthstone collections before the next expansion in April. Details will come out when I have more to share, so please be patient =).
