Unlike some card games, Yu-Gi-Oh has a very well defined game board, split into different areas called zones. The positioning of the zones matters quite a lot to how the game is played. In this guide, we'll take a look at each zone, and offer a brief description of how it works.

Yu-Gi-Oh Game Board Breakdown

The game's board is laid out as follows (we will only show your side of the field):

1. Main Monster Zones

3. Main Deck Zone (out of frame)

7. Extra Deck Zone (out of frame)
8. Extra Monster Zones

Main Monster Zones

This is where you Summon and Set your Monsters. There are Main Monster Zones, each being able to hold one Monster. 

If all Zones are occupied, you will not be able to play any more Monsters. Tribute Summoning, as well as the various types of Special Summon, will require you to remove monsters from the board before the Summon happens, so you'll still be able to do it even if the Monster Zones are full.

Spell/Trap Zones

This is where you activate and Set your Spells and Traps. There are 5 Spell/Trap Zones, each being able to hold one Spell or Trap.

If all Zones are occupied, you will not be able to play any more Spells or Traps. 

Main Deck Zone

This is where you put your Main Deck. It's position doesn't really matter in relation to the rest of the board. In Master Duel, it is in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Graveyard

When a card is discarded from your deck or destroyed on the field, or when a Spell/Trap resolves its Effect, it is sent to the Graveyard. Cards can also be sent to the Graveyard via Effects, in which case the card doesn't count as being destroyed. On more modern cards, the Graveyard is abbreviated as GY.

It's position doesn't really matter in relation to the rest of the board. In Master Duel, it is represented by a circle above the Deck.

Banished Zone

When a card is banished (removed from the game), it is sent to the banished zone. Cards are usually banished due to Effects. It's position doesn't really matter in relation to the rest of the board. In Master Duel, it is represented by a circle above the Graveyard.

Field Zone

A special zone used for activating and Setting a Field Spell.

Extra Deck Zone

This is where you put your Extra Deck. It's position doesn't really matter in relation to the rest of the board. In Master Duel, it is in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Extra Monster Zones

Special zones where Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Link Monsters can be summoned, as well as Pendulum Monsters under certain circumstances. These zones are shared between both players, but each player can (usually) only use one at a time. You can learn more about them in our Link Monsters guide, since they are the reason those exist.

Pendulum Zones

Special zones used to perform Pendulum Summons. They overlap with the left-most and right-most areas of the Spell/Trap Zone. You can learn more about them in our Pendulum Monsters guide, since they are the reason those exist.

Column

A column in Yu-Gi-Oh refers to a vertical line of Zones stretching from one player's Spell/Trap zone's to their opponent's. A column includes the following:

• The Extra Monster Zone (if there is one) 
• The opponent's Monster Zone 
• The opponent's Spell/Trap Zone
