Quote From Riot Games Today Riot Games announced K/DA's arrival to League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra, Teamfight Tactics, and League of Legends: Wild Rift (in select regions; more details to come soon). The multi-game comeback will begin October 29, 2020 and include a skinline in League of Legends, new personalization items in Legends of Runeterra and Teamfight Tactics, and more, all dedicated to K/DA's 2020 ALL OUT EP.
K/DA is a pop girl group formed by Riot Games, featuring themed versions of champions from the online PC game, League of Legends. Initially inspired by K-pop, K/DA has since evolved to embrace a more global pop sound and has formed its musical identity around the characters representing the girl group, Ahri, Evelynn, Akali, and Kai'Sa, instead of the vocals of any one individual talent. The group debuted on November 3, 2018 with their viral hit sensation, POP/STARS, and a dedicated skinline in League of Legends. Since then, the girls officially made their comeback on August 27, 2020 with their pre-release single, THE BADDEST, which will be one of five songs on their upcoming EP, ALL OUT.
In Legends of Runeterra, the celebration is in full swing with the K/DA ALL OUT Event. "Seraphine come to Runeterra as a permanent update for player’s collections." oh no. I don't play LOR too much anymore its more of an every other week thing for me but I must say Seraphine is kind of annoying. I'm not riding the Sera hate bandwagon but I do agree that she just looks horribly out of place in LOL and LOR like someone before me said throwing popstar magic at cybernetic pizza men or whatever just feels weird. Since we're based in the Runeterra lore using skin lines to make cards seems sort of weird. I'd be fine if it was just cosmetics but they're actually full-blown cards and does it do that weird cutscene every time?
TL:DR I don't like Seraphine and this looks out of place
I like Runeterra, and I like some K-pop. But this isn't a chocolate-and-peanut-butter situation.
This is a toothpaste-and-orange-juice situation.
For once, I actually agree wholeheartedly with you
I likely won't buy the pass this time...but that's mostly just because of the aesthetic, rather than any annoyance at what's being added to the game.
I reserve full judgment until it's actually here.
I hope to god this is not the norm for LoR. I've really started enjoying the game, and immersion and the universe LoR brings to the cards. This completely breaks that immersion for me.
And to top it off it's a forced shitty K pop band that Riot is apparently trying to cram down people's throats at that.
I was hoping for a Halloween style event like the harrowing event from leagues of legends, this one is a solid skip for me.
I loved the Spirit Blossom festival, but by the time I reached the end of this article my enthusiasm had all vanished. I won’t be buying the pass this time, and I hope this doesn’t tarnish the long-term feel of the Runeterra world. @AngryShuckie says below that the band is technically part of their universe, but I just don’t see how performers with a 21st-century K-Pop aesthetic feel right here.
Magic’s Walking Dead mystery box disaster was still worse - Runeterra will never demand the kind of money from their players that Magic does. But as far as game immersion goes, I’d feel more comfortable with Rick Grimes fighting zombies than with this. I wonder what the people who just left Magic for LoR think of this?
I’m fine with the new cards being added, but they should be craftable after the event so that no one is locked out of the meta
If they aren't able to be gotten after the event then yeah, that is a huge mistake. You can't just add a card to the game and then declare it gone forever if you weren't around at the time. That said I haven't spotted a place where they address that so unless I'm blind (entirely possible) we can't be sure yet.
I don’t know how I feel about the K/DA cards being forever playable in LoR. I kind of wish that once the event is over the cards get new art and names to fit canon LoR. If they release cards like this, at one point LoR will have a really disjointed aesthetic. Using pop stars and star guardians against Cybernetic assassins and pizza delivery people would feel very strange.
I don't like this.
First of all it ruins "imersion" in game. LoR is supposed to be the game where we get to see the world of Runeterra. Having these popstar spells would be like getting Overwatch cards in Hearthstone. Feels out of place.
Second of all, this is pure promotion. K/DA is a real life collaboration of artists and singers, corporations and advertisers. It's a giant ad basically for the band Riot made and their upcoming song. And i don't like ads in my games.
I fully see where you are coming from as it instinctively feels out of place to me too, but at the same time I cannot come up with an argument of why K/DA characters couldn't fit under the banner 'Legends of Runeterra'. They're from an alternate universe, but they are at least still from a version of Runeterra. So saying it would be like Overwatch cards in HS is not quite right.
Thinking about it, most HS expansions have some degree of alternate universe story telling going on, so HS wouldn't bat an eyelid at a Warcraft analogue to K/DA appearing. Besides, we have our music cards already thanks to Elite Tauren Chieftain.
Hearthstone already sort of had a musical theme add-on in that Karazhan adventure.
I remembered there was some mini controversy when Ragnaros, Lightlord was introduced, because of so called 'immersion' factor. But card games need themes, and its not beyond its scope to sometimes break some rules. Usually because its done in a comical lighthearted way, we can gather some suspension of disbelieve. But this is something else, that's for sure. Maybe its the k-pop theme, I don't know. Not a fan, and I can empathize with LoR fans to have to put up with this one.
Yeah I think the modern theme of K/DA is a jarring jump from the fantasy setting of LoR, especially when they haven't established the sort of 'fiction within a fiction' thing HS has going on that allows it to explain away inconsistencies with Warcraft canon as embellishments of the story teller. I guess Old Gods was the first expansion to use that in a major way, hence why some controversy surrounded a few far-from-canon cards.
With a limited supply of LoL Champions to use, I think it was only a matter of time before LoR was willing to branch out a bit, and I guess going to the surrounding LoL media such as K/DA was an obvious choice to start doing that. I agree with everyone else that it feels too far from LoR's aesthetic, but I'm not surprised it happened.
I really enjoyed the Spirit Blossom event, so even though K-Pop isn't my usual jive I'm looking forward to this.
Hmmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this. It kind of gives me mystery box vibes from MTG. So on top of the new set which contains about 40 cards, we'll get another small set of cards as part of a mini expansion. These next few months are going to be... interesting.
Edit: Apparently I misread the amount of cards released.
Where'd you hear about the 27 cards part? From what I can see its just 5 Epic spells.
Not a clue but I can tell you it wasn't in Riot's press release so I highly doubt its accuracy.
They've said we've have two smaller 40 card expansions after Call of the Mountain came out. K/DA definitely not a small expansion.
