Opinion on pokemon brilliant diamond and shining pearl?

Submitted 3 years, 9 months ago by

I would like to hear what people here have to say about pokemon brilliant diamond and shining pearl (BDSP).

I know we haven't seen much but i'm pretty happy even though i never wanted a gen 4 remake that much.

I did think they made a pretty bold move with the trailer they presented.

    The series has been around for 25 years, but as an RPG it really still caters to the youngest audiences for the game, with fairly simplistic mechanics, easy bosses, etc., and very little new or different from game to game. That's fine, of course, and gives a new audience their Pokemon experience every few years, but there are tons of richer RPG titles for people who have aged out of that and want a more challenging experience. Pokemon shows no real interest in aging up with its older fans.

    With that in mind, it's hard for me to get excited about a Pokemon remake. It plays on nostalgia to sell games to people for whom the game is certainly too easy today. As much nostalgia as I have for Pokemon, today the experience feels worn out.

    I'm gonna be real here.

    The original Gen 4 games are my absolute favourites in the series.

    The remakes, however, look like garbage. The novelty of the 3D gimmick has worn out, so from the looks of it we're just getting 3D remake of the same game, which effectively just loses all the charm the original artstyle had, leaving us with basically just an inferior version.

    At the same time, these are remakes of D&P...and not Platinum...which is the actual good game that fixed most of the huge issues that the originals had and given that Gamefreak seems to just not give a single fuck at this point I doubt that they've actually put in the effort to iron out those flaws for the remakes.

    Basically, what is even the point of paying for these remakes if I can just play a superior game from a decade back that I already own.

    I tried having fun once.

    It was awful.

    I agree. I am going to buy the game simply because it is a Pokemon game and it makes me feel nostalgic. The ancient experience doesn't bother me very much, and that might be because of all the MMOs I have played. My biggest issue with the game is the weird toy like graphics and the console itself. If I ever have an RPG itch to scratch my go to series isn't Pokemon. I would play Baldur's Gate or Divinity: Original Sin.

    I personaly am thrilled about the remakes!

    Always liked Gen 4 and was hoping that we would get somekinde of remake. I also do not have a problem with the Art Style they chose. I kinda like it :)

    My only hope was that they will not make it into a Let's Go game and as far as we know it is a Core Pokemon Remake and not  a Let's Go Title. So, im pretty happy about it.

    Would it have been cool if they implemented something new to the story etc? yes, but maybe they will but even if they don't im still happy about the remakes!

    They can't come soon enough :)

    Challenge me ... when you're ready to duel a god!

    I'll buy them, I'll play them, and I'll enjoy them since I didn't play Diamond and Pearl originally, but...

    Platinum did a lot of heavy lifting for gen 4, I hope they take a lot from platinum. Mainly having more than 2 fire types in the regional dex..

    The remakes have tended to mix in the 3rd game for story and mechanics, but not the wild Pokemon, so you're probably stuck with Chimchar and Ponyta for fire types sadly.

    Having only played Diamond, could you give me some idea of just how much Platinum fixed? Because Diamond and Pearl have a LOT more problems than just having 2 fire types:

    • Team Galactic make no sense whatsoever (they all just follow Cyrus with no idea what his plan is. Even the admins!);
    • the animation and text speed is slow beyond the point of frustration;
    • there are way too many trainers with Gyarados, which is too strong with too few weaknesses to just give to every other water trainer;
    • too many of the new Pokemon are just evolutions of old ones, and too many of those aren't even obtainable until the post-game;
    • the story's pacing is way off;
    • the Elite Four ratchets up levels so much that you are forced into grinding for ages or cheesing the last fights by stalling with endless revives;
      • I like Cynthia fine, but her fight isn't actually enjoyable
    • why do I have to deal with the fog?! It's not even close to fun, but somehow isn't even the worst thing, oh no, that honour goes to
    • the damn swamp mechanic where you get stuck every other step! Just why? Who wants that?

    These are all little annoyances that can easily be fixed in the remakes though, if they weren't already fixed in Platinum. Certainly they had learned their lesson going into Black and White, which hasn't got a single one of those issues.

    The fire type thing was an example of the lack of diversity in the national dex, as I recall the electric types are very unrepresented aswell. Which is something that platinum improved heavily on, making sure that gym leaders and E4 members could actually use a full team of that type. I think platinum added like 100 pokemon?

    Anyway I will try to answer these to the best of my abilities! :D

    *The story of Team Galactic is still pretty much  the same, although fleshed out a bit more. (I would say the story of most pokemon games isn't that great)

    * The animation speed was improved on quite a bit, still fell short, which is more of a testiment on how poorly D and P were.  IRC it went from 20 FPS to 30 FPS

    * This was solved by having more variety in the dex. (That gyarados double battle ;_;)

    * Platinum fixed this partialy, by making those pokemon available in the maingame, a MUST in my eyes

    * I never really pay a lot of attention to the early pokemon game stories, but they add a bit more setup I would say, don't expect miracles

    *Both the E4 and Cynthia are similar levels, Cynthia is still quite hard on Platinum, but I feel you are able to better counter her with the expanded regional dex.

    * The Fog and the Swamp, I feel you, unfortunately platinum did not do much to change that. I hope they don't bring back HM's, but I fear the swamp sticks around as a feature.

    Played all the pokemon games up until the remake of the 3rd generation. Generally watch the VGS (tournament) So here's my opinion;

    - The pokemon games have not really innovated much throughout, like really little. Typical of Nintendo games anyway. It used to be quite exciting to catch these things and then level them up for those sweet evolves. But as the year go by I have to admit that the gameplay is really lacking the same hype as it used to since red and blue. Most pokemon games gradually decent into grind fests, and me with very little time nowadays just cant handle that anymore.

    - The animations were brutally slow. Thank god there's an option to omit it altogether. See that hearthstone? That's an option you should absolutely give us.

    As for DiamondPearl:

    - Pokemon design wise, well, its decent-ish. Best designs were up until the 3rd generation and everything went downhill from there. Unfortunately DiamondPearl's pokemon designs were weak, to me anyway.

    - Team Galatic's arc were alright. It wasn't as silly as team rocket, but man that main villain.

    - I don't know why from gen 2 onwards all your rivals were super nice to you. I really just prefer a Gary-like rival where we just do battle and he gets frustrated after I kick his ass.

    Its certainly not the best pokemon game I've played (gen 3 will capture that title) but it was an engaging distraction.

    I fully accept Pokemon is aimed at kids so you can't expect deep stories, but if you're going to insist on having villain teams they should be somewhat engaging, or at least convey what they're about. Team Plasma did it super well, since animal rights activists make so much sense in a world that revolves around making animals fight, so it is easy to believe Ghetsis could manipulate them with that facade. B2W2 also did a great job of showing how Team Plasma was truly torn on its ideals, and that many of them were genuinely trying to do the right thing.

    How they went back to inane nonsense with Team Flare, having just got the nuance of a villain team spot on, I'll never know. No matter how hard they tried to sell it, fashion is not a good basis for a villain team, especially when that 'fashion' means putting on ugly orange suits :P

    Anyway, the only reason I care so much about the story in these games is that long ago I set myself the challenge of using every single (non-legendary) Pokemon family in a team during the story and up to the E4. With team sizes ranging from 6 to 9, that meant going through the stories a lot of times. I finished all Pokemon in Gens 1-7 shortly before Gen 8 came out, but stopped there because I don't own a Switch (plus I have no desire to keep it up my whole life!).

    Personally i'm quite excited for the gen 4 remakes, personally i like the chibi look because all gen pre-gen 6 pokemon games models were actually chibi as well. (But to a far, FAR lesser extent, this is just full-on Zelda Links awakening levels of Chibi.) So this kinda feels like what diamond/peal would have probably looked like if it were to release today AND the series didn't go 100% 3D. I also really like that Gamefreak ISN'T developing the remakes, because personally i feel like Gamefreak has been cutting corners and slacking off while making their newer games. (Let's hope Pokemon Arceus is given better treatment.)

    I did notice that in the town next to the valley windworks (i think it's called Floaroma town? Might be mistaken though.), there is the platinum-only NPC that gives gracedia flowers. So that gives me hope that their including some of the platinum features. (Battle frontier was Platinum only, so i hope they implement that as well! :] ) I also kinda hope their completely impelementing the special events, like the Darkrai, Arceus and Shaymin events and give us those special items during events so we can go and catch them!

    Personally my favorite gen is gen 5, the story is the best of any pokemon game and there actually a kinda difficult games. But gen 4 also holds a special place in my heart. As a kid i spend so much time in the underground and messing around with my younger brother and stuff. I'm really looking forward to enjoying that game on the switch once again. (Even though i'm currently nuzlocking platinum on my 3ds lol.)

    RNG is only fun as long as there is a 50/50 chance of getting something really good or trash level of bad. If RNG always results in something good, then it's not fun.

    The last game I played was the 3rd game ramakes, I didn't even finish it, it's too easy, I mean why some late game boss fights have 3 pokemon... or low level ones..

    B2W2 did the right thing in challenge mode, but sadly no other game followed on that, I think I heard this game is developed by another studio that is not GF, while GF develops Arceus:legends, so we might get challenge mode maybe.. hopefully they do more changenges OR/AS were nice in the feature aspect.. just wish they would amp the difficulty a bit..

    so you can't just beat the game with magikarps...

    You know what pokemon games need?

    Nuzlocke mode.. so the game forces you to play by the hardcore Nuzlocke rules, doubt they would ever do it, cause they would acknowledge their fans and they would never do that.

    Hey WorseNightmare! Just to give you a little hope. In the trailer an NPC that gives you the item to transform Shaymin in Platinum can be found. So maybe they can get more of the Platinum changes into the game.

    I am not certain that it will happen, so I am anyways prepared for the worst possible, so I do not get dissapointed later

    Now making my own comment on it. I have mixed opinions on it. Graphically I think it is good. But... The characters are totally out of place... Also the male main character model looks horrible in battle. It kinda feels like it needs some more work into it. I never was a big gen 4 fan, so it does not touch me in that way as much.

    Would have been Happier with another casual but built with care Let's Go centered in Johto. As that is my favourite region and do not expect another remake in the classic formula.

    Fan pokemon games are better done than recent additions to pokemon lately. I have been playing pokemon infinite fusion and it's amazing, settings for different gens, multiple regions, every pokemon. And the ability to fuse with anything i want. The level of innovation compared to current game freak, is tesla showing off their rocket, and game freak showing off the wheel. And at the end of the day that's all game freak is doing. They don't want to reinvent the wheel like fan games are doing. They want to keep shoveling the same things out at you with little to no innovation. The last pokemon game i played was sun and moon. I didn't buy it, my sister gave it to me, because we used to play pokemon when we were younger. And since the games have not held my interest at all. If you want an enjoyable, well made, pokemon game, with new mechanics, and a fun experience, don't look to game freak to give it to you.

    Living like that.

    As for what i think of the new game. I think it has the graphics of a korean gacha game, and will have little to no changes from the base game.

    Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the graphics of the remake so far. From the trailers we have seen, it looks a lot more like they had planned to release the remake for the 3DS but missed its opportunity and instead released it for the Switch instead. The art style is not the best I have seen but it's not the worst either. I think it all boils down to whether or not they would replicate the gameplay and story from the original. I'm secretly hoping they would add Mega evolutions even if they haven't shown it thus far. It would be pretty cool since we have already seen Primal Dialga in the past from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

    Talking about the other Pokemon games, it's pretty weird how people didn't like BW back then but now everyone loves it and praises it a lot. I was always a huge fan of it so I'm glad that there are a lot more people who appreciate it now, especially its story. I think a lot of people are hoping that they'd do BW remakes, and while I'm down for it I wish they can just skip it and give it to XY because I feel like remakes should go to the games that actually needs fixing not to ones that are already good.

    Also while talking about the Pokemon stories, I feel like the mainline Pokemon games don't really deliver on it aside from a few that stands out like BW. However, their spin-offs like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky is pretty good storywise and have a lot of content. It has one of the biggest post-game content out of all the Pokemon games out there where it feels like a completely different story. Give it a try if you guys haven't.

    Take my words with a grain of salt. I'm unranked and only play casuals lmao.

    Uhh IIRC in Gen II "???"/Silver hated your guts for a long time, getting more and more frustrated that you were beating him and his "weak" Pokemon. It wasn't until towards the end that he realized he was the problem.

    Anyone else keep his name as "???"? I thought it added to his mysterious nature, not knowing who he was.

    ...Gen II was the best.

    Anyway, I do not own a 3DS so never got a chance to play X/Y or Sun/Moon, but Gen IV was my least favorite of those that I played. I'll probably pass on this one, at least until I learn what the differences are: if the experience is refreshingly different (not likely, I know), I might take a stab at it. I could just wait for Arceus or replay something older if I need to scratch the Pokemon itch. I heard X/Y had some issues, but that's the one port I'm waiting for; I want to play around with Mega Evolutions!
