The Witcher (Netflix)

Submitted 5 years, 4 months ago by

The Witcher trailer was released some weeks ago and I'm super excited. I really can't wait to watch this new series on Netflix!!! Of course, I want desperately to fill the big empty hole GoT left into my heart... At least a bit. ;)

So, what about you, people??? What do you think about this new series???

I'm not planning on watching it. I don't like when a TV show or movie is done with the same story and characters as games where I get to make decisions and affect how the story ends. It's like a slap in the fact for me, saying "You did the story wrong.  This is what REALLY happened and none of your choices mean anything". I believe that games and stories like these shouldn't have "cannon endings" for this reason. Besides, I don't have Netflix.

I'm afraid to get too hyped because video game to movie/show adaptations are notorious for turning out terrible.  Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised :)

I have some cures for a GoT shaped hole in the heart

    • If you're looking for something with the same dark, nihilistic vibes and vulgar HBO flavor, you can check out Westworld.  It also has beautifully elegant twists rivaling Ned dying in the end.  Multiple POVs from a diverse set of characters competing against each other ensures you're guaranteed to find favorites (for you, I'd guess it'd be the unnamed CEO enjoying his company's own game.  If only all gaming companies had such a cool CEO Kappa)
    • Similarly, American Horror Story is also dark and full of terrors twists.  Those plot twists are less elegant and more for shock value, but what makes this series stand out is the lack of plot armor that I've only ever seen here and in GoT.  Everyone can (and will) die.  That said, it's not to be confused with an actual horror movie; this series has a plot of substance and the horror part is only for backdrop flavor.  The recent seasons have become a bit too political for my tastes (maybe you'll like the MAGA vs feminists season idk) but because it's an anthology, that doesn't really effect the rest of the story
    • If you liked GoT for its complex Machiavellian politics and intrigue you can join "Littlefinger" in House of Cards.  Unlike the above two and GoT, this series features only one main character but that certainly doesn't take away from its complexity.  And just like GoT, this also went to shit when they stopped following the books
    • If you just want to watch evil mary sues rampage through a medieval setting like, dare I say, a certain Bolton, check out Showtime's The Borgias.  There's also no shortage of Machiavellian politics and intrigue here but it's mostly simple, 20 goodmen type shenanigans.  The pilot is a bit weak as they set up the story but it gets fun fast

Im looking forward to seeing Witcher, yes. Not sure what to expect, but i will watch it.

I can second recommendation of Westworld. Pretty unique take on a relatively common "robot" theme. I was pleasantly surprised. And there are some major WTF moments as well, great series :)

Westworld seems good; never watched American Horror Story but I have heard a lot of positive things about it; watched some episodes of House of Cards and enjoyed them but for some reason stopped watching the series; and some people very close to me recommend me to watch The Borgias (Jeremy Irons is one of my favorite actors of all time :D).

Thanks a lot for taking your time to recommend me series according to my persona, NightCrawler, the fact all of them match my tastes and personality in some way is really impressive. :O I finally decided to give a try to The Borgias, it's time to start watching it. ;)

Thanks!!! As I said previously, Westworld seems good, maybe I should watch it at the same time as The Borgias, you know, to vary a little...

For more unique takes on sci-fi, make sure to watch Black Mirror if you haven't already.  Westworld is more or less a really long episode of Black Mirror.  It's an anthology series with WTF endings each episode.  They both deal with the underlying theme of future or emerging technologies and their moral implications of their existence.

I dunno man, while you cannot judge a series by the trailers, they simply do not  have the feeling the games did. The feeling of mysterious medieval ghost story...This somehow feels soulless?Cheap? I dunno.

Maybe i've gotten so much into anime that 3d just turn's me off...

I have to agree with the above. The trailer didn’t thrill me, Henry Cavil is a good actor but the hair and getup seems super cheesy in what is supposed to be a dark fantasy world. Though most times the trailer is terrible the actual show/movie is good so I’m hoping for that effect here.

I loved the Witcher games and have recently been reading the books that inspire them, so it’ll be fun seeing an adaptation of the book storylines. It might change some things too, since technically the games were official fan fiction. This has the author, Andrzej Sapkowski, as the creative director so it will follow he books more closely.

Well, I guess 3D hentai looks like shit to you too. But don't worry, I'm pretty sure most of us don't like to watch it either, hehehe... XD XD XD

maybe they could do it like Clue and have 3/4 different endings. would you watch it then

I used to watch episodes of Black Mirror with my older brother together at his home, but then he moved too far for my taste, so I stopped watching the series. :P :P :P

I'm the kind of person who usually needs to watch and share things with someone else. Most of the time, I can't stand watching a movie or series alone, and no, not even Game of Thrones (when it was good)... :( :( :(

I normally enjoy these things alone and while I can agree that watching with people is generally more fun, I can't imagine having to do this always

I mean, that sounds a logistical nightmare.  What if one person doesn't like a show after getting into it but the other one does?  What if one person becomes super busy (or moves away)?  What if you want to start watching a show but no one is interested in what you picked?  What if your friend goes, "wtf man, why are you such a fan of a complete psychopath like Ramsay Bolton?" lol

I do plan on watching it and I was initially very hyped when I first heard of it. After watching the trailer though, I don't really know anymore. I was hoping it would be more focused on Geralt. Maybe they want to make it more like Game of Thrones with the ensemble cast thing?

I probably won't be watching too long if that's the case. I just want to watch him collect bounties on monsters, get drunk, meet really strange people, maybe throw in a quest, etc.

I just hope that they somehow work in the storyline of the Hearts of Stone expansion. That was such a powerful story, the characters, the music, and it still resonates with me. Gaunter O'Dimm and the Von Everec brothers - just really well done. I know it's not necessarily part of the books, but just wishful thinking.

And I echo similar thoughts above, that the trailer doesn't really excite me - I hope the show steers toward the dark and ghostly feel of the books and games.

Well, it's really not a problem most of the time, at least not for me. I don't have a stablished group of friends, neither I want one. I love to hang out with all kind of people, but most of the time individualy, mostly because I enjoy doing it that way. Of course, you have to be very tolerant to do such a thing as a way of life, while being very curious at the same time. I already received some Whatsapp messages and phone calls because of my birthday, and guess what? None of them knows each other personally.

The fact I also pay a lot of attention to every single detail about the people surronding me, since they are notably different to each other, makes it easy for me to choose a good candidate to watch a certain movie or series together. :) :) :)

Oh, and while some people first reaction to my obsession with Ramsay is not very pleasant, they tend to accept it without any problem in the end, hehe. :P :P :P

I'm totally ready to watch The Witcher on Netflix. I don't mind what story they throw onto it. It's just another one of many possibilities.

The games were not the adaptations of the book, the first game started around 2 years after the last book finished.

And yes the show is going to be based on the books, to be precise the first season will cover the stories from the first two books - The Last Wish and the Sword of Destiny and most likely the 2nd season(if it comes to that) will start covering the actual saga from the next 5 books.

I hope the Yen actress is really good at acting like Yen because they sure didn't go for visual similarity.

I hope to hell this show is good but I do have niggling doubts.

Also I want to know who is playing Dandilion.
