Hearthstone's Newest Card, The Amazing Reno, Has a Yogg-tastic Hero Power

Published 5 years, 10 months ago by (Updated 5 years, 10 months ago)

We've finally got the hero power for The Amazing Reno which is being added to the game later this month with the release of the Galakrond's Awakening Adventure.

Say hello to a Passive Hero Power! Thanks to Hearthstone's Liv for providing the sauce.

Reno is essentially Yogg-Saron, slowly pushing out all those random spells!

The Origins of The Amazing Reno's Power

It's such a weird card, how did we end up here? Well, it turns out this is what Magic Trick was for a while!

Quote From Celestalon

Fun fact: That's what the Mage spell "Magic Trick" was, for much of Rise of Shadows' development. It was simply "Make a minion disappear. *Poof!*"

We liked the effect and flavor, it was just too similar to Polymorph. So, we put that idea on hold, until we found this design, and loved it. :D

what cost did you try it at? 5-6 seems ok but powerful I guess

Aye, it would likely have been (5), maybe (6). We redesigned it before the point where we really fine-tune balance, so hard to know for sure.

  • I was implying that Reno, as a legendary card, would feature more as a fun card rather than a meta defining one. Also since blizzard will be giving away a portion of the first wing for free (I think everyone gets 4 cards), Reno will likely be one of the free cards. As such, I wouldn't be surprise if the card was less powerful than others.

As for the 4 hero cards, that's still an assumption. Has it been confirmed?

    • Logical assumption

  • This card seems to be a nod to what Yogg did in competitive play, which was to (maybe) turn an unwinnable situation around. They're like: heck, you're probably hoping for a board clear and maybe a little health from your Yogg, so we're just going to straight up give that to you without making it too unfair for your opponent. As for the ongoing RNG effect? That's the spice or the price, depending on how you look at it. Also nothing that a little Frost Lich Jaina can't solve in wild, which is where this guy is headed to in a little over a year.

  • I find myself in a tricky situation with this card.

I, from a personal view, hate it. It's deeply disappointing to me to see what is usually an expansion-defining card be so hard random. There's never going to be a time when I can put this in a deck happily, and it's one legendary slot that Mage won't get any value from.

On the other hand, for the long-term health of Hearthstone as a game - and a community - this is a great thing. People who play for laughs and shenanigans get an actual trump card, which is something they rarely get - and it being a hero is so much more meaningful than it simply being another legendary. It's a release which offers a nod towards the players who find alternate paths to enjoyment than simply chasing legend every season, and while I'm not one of those people, it's good that Blizzard are supporting them.

So, yeah, I'm going to be sitting ambivalent for quite a while.

    • I'm very-much inclined to agree with you. I don't believe in Yogg and I hate relying on randomness, but it's still a fun-looking card.

  • are these cards going to be in constructed or just adventure ?

    • These cards will be available in Constructed; they are not unique to the Adventure. This is like the Adventures of old, such as Blackrock Mountain or The League of Explorers.

      • thanks

    Yogg Box

Here's the breakdown of every spell you can get from the hero power and whether it is good, aka never detrimental, might be not good in a situation if you don't have a board for it, Meh, this being either targeted cards that can shoot yourself in the foot or cards that might have undesirable effects, such as overload, card draw, because sometimes you really want it and other times it's not good but in my opinion, it's important to have its own little area, bad cards, these being ones that essentially are impossible to use properly or would replace the hero power, assuming you want to keep it, and finally Yogg box, because Yogg box basically is just the hero power 10 times so I thought it deserved its own spot.

All together I feel that the hero power is definitely not as bad as it first appears to be as there's a lot of times when it'll either give you some minor bonus at the start of the turn, potentially kill an enemy's minion or just do something to not impact the game a ton. Obviously there's scenarios where the default mage ping will be better than this hero power but I don't think this ruins the card as much as people might initially think. Not to mention the chances it just kills you are very low, with Myra's Unstable Element and Overflow being the only two spells (around .6%) that probably lose the game for you from just drawing too much and hitting fatigue super fast.
    • Great work. I wanted to zoom in on the first turn after Reno is played, when the board will likely only have your opponent's minions. In this case, I would move 54 cards from Ehh to Hits and 14 from Ehh to Bad (mostly cards that affect minions). That results in a greater than 50% chance of a 'Hit' on that turn.

That's completely fair. I wanted to focus more on how useful the hero power would be over a long period of time instead of just the first turn as at least in standard there is no way to swap to some other hero power. Either way, the hero power is significantly better than what it first appears to be.

    • For all that number crunching, this should be pinned up on this post.

  • The only way I see this working is that if the spells casted by the HP count towards completing the new quest. Then you can get rid of this horrible HP ASAP...

I actually never thought about it this way. But that also means your deck must have no more than ten spells which 1 will be held on until this is played.

  • It definitely plays into the themes of being distracted easily and getting everything done right without even really trying, as we all know and love from Reno.

  • Quote From Nuagoo

    as history teaches us.

Scroll of wonder isnt your hero casting spells, yogg isnt your hero casting spells, this is the first time a hero card is casting spells. Aka a hero casting spells. Even zuljin another hero card doesn't cast spells itself it recasts them. We dont know for sure if this will be a thing. But thanks for sounding like you knew for sure.

  • "My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined."

  • I wonder if the cast works for card effects since it is your hero casting spells. If you cast a secret does it buff secret keeper for instance. Will be an interesting thing for sure.

No, because SecretKeeper specifically says "When a secret is played." which requires it to be played directly from your hand.
