[Game] Card Treasure Hunt (The Resurrection Attempt)

Submitted 5 years, 1 month ago by

I found the original one pretty neat, let’s see how this goes...

To quote the legendary Riosix:

It's a treasure hunt using your Hearthstone card collection. I'll start it off with a riddle, and you try to figure out what card I'm talking about. First one to answer correctly picks a new card and makes the next riddle. Make it as difficult as you want, just not impossible :)

I’ll start with:

Alone I’m quite fearsome,

you better watch out,

but doubled I’m more than tripled,

and my gurgle - a mighty shout.

    If you strive

    To master my art

    You gotta feed my knife

For your efforts, I'll give you a card

Well, then I guess it has to be Cult Master?

It was my initial guess, but then I started wandering along the Blade of C’thun path...

    No, sorry.

To solve this, you need to figure out what a knife or a dagger metaphorically eats. Also think about the "art". Those two parts lead you to the name of the card.

    Bloodmage Thalnos?

Knife "drinks" blood, magic is an art, and he gives you a card. Though I'm surprised it wasn't Cult Master since that also seems to fit the riddle very nicely, so if I'm right since that would be 2-wins-in-a-row for me PopeNeia you can have my turn.

See my comment on the correct guess - I had the riddle before so rather than go twice in a row i'm giving you my go since I thought your answer fit the riddle too.

    Arrogant Crusader?

The first line sounds like something an arrogant elf would say. Lines 2 and 3 reference his death rattle that will summon a ghoul “fan” if your opponent kills him.

I came online but was then shut down,

And a second-string meatbag was given my place.

Don’t worry about me though; now I’m online again

To blast everything! (well, maybe not Face...)

    Icicle?

Ice Lance used to be used to deal lots of burn damage the the opponent's face, but then it was moved the Hall of Fame. Now we have Icicle to replace it, but Icicle cannot hit your opponents face.

A good guess, but no. Look at some of the words - there’s a deliberate theme there to give a clue about the nature of the card.

I almost want to say Leeroy Jenkins because the card was inspired by a WoW player, so the whole "going online" seems to fit with that. Also it got nerfed, so the "got shut down" could be a double meaning in that sense. But Leeroy goes face, he just does.

Not Leeroy, but you’re kind of on the right track with the “online” aspect with the card being let’s say “technological” in nature. I thought the “meatbag” insult would be a giveaway as to the type, but I guess maybe people have forgotten the best part of KotOR (or never played it).

And I’ll go ahead and say the “shut down/back online ” is NOT a reference to nerfing. It’s about the history of a specific part of the card.

    Foe Reaper 4000?

It got 'replaced' you could say, by Cave Hydra. But now it sees a ton of play in battlegrounds where it attacks a lot of minions, but not face.

Nope but it is a mech so you’ve got that.

    Last hints for the night:

It’s in standard. The 4th line is a specific clue about the card’s keyword(s)

    Is it the Omega Devastator?

Everything seems to line up, and I assume the meatbag refers to something like Crowd Roaster when we were experimenting with Dragon Warrior?

    PopeNeia has it!

The meatbag line was just part of the “mech” theme - insulting the (fleshy) goblin who took over the Omega Defender in its place.

And to clarify that “online/shutdown/back up” clue for anyone who missed/forgot that story:

The art for Omega Devastator was originally on Omega Defender. When the HS community asked why that card wasn’t a mech (given the art), Blizz changed it to the current Goblin-focused art. They kept the art though and attached it to Omega Devastator when that was printed.

it sounds like an elemental or dragon since most of them need each other to trigger their effect but Swamp-dwelling makes me think it might be Bandersmosh so my first guess is it ?

    First sentence hints battlecry probably;

Second should hint what the tribe might be,

The last one is - if it is a battlecry, it doesn't have "if you played an elemental last turn" or "if you are holding a dragon" synergy.

Those are my guesses but still want to say Bandersmosh :D

Deathwing, Mad Aspect? The swamp-dwelling partner being Swamp King Dred, who attacks all enemy minions when they are played, while deathwing attacks of its own accord.

    Cumulo-Maximus?

The swamp-partner being Blazecaller. They have the same battlecry effect (deal 5 dmg), just that Maximus doesn't need "play an elemental last turn" to trigger. Blazecaller was from Un'goro so maybe that's the swamp?

Hit everything straight on the nose, the swamp referring to Un’goro.

"Small" and "weak" to me suggests 1-cost minions.
    "Juicy bones" suggests carnivore?
"Call" battlecry and Queen Carnassa's roar?

I feel like I'm going in the wrong direction here since she wouldn't eat the bones (so "juicy" would be off), but Reliquary Seeker?

Battlecry that's helped by having a lot of small/"weaker" minions in a Zoolock deck, a reliquary holds bones, & it has "seek" if that's the missed keyword you mentioned.

It's shifty, so good at hide & seek, he's never played as himself, and there's an Angry Chicken reference in its flavor text.

So it's either a stealth minion or a shifting one like Chameleos or Shifter Zerus and it has something to do with Angry Chicken... I can't come up with something that includes both those qualities. I guess Dozing Marksman though. He's silent because he's asleep and his effect is close to the chickens.

Can we get another hint please?

A master at hide and seek,
Only few have even heard him speak.
    Roosters, beware!
He sits on a chicken just to make you despair.

"The best bang for your buck"
Well, a bunch of extra cards might sound great,
    Especially in glittery spark.
    But win-rate not so much,
If you're all out of luck!

An extra hint: "Hide and seek" does not refer to Stealth.

Not quite young nor quite old, a story's that about to unfold.

So, I was thinking either Whizbang the Wonderful, or Zayle, Shadow Cloak. Both are very rarely heard, as they are replaced by a deck.

I still don't know how this references Angry Chicken though.

I had guessed Gnomish Experimenter yesterday (last post on page 18) and never got a response (unless you included me in the "no" to JFK?) - is it him? Seems to fit your new clue of card draw/spark/RNG-reliance

Rofellos got it! It's Whizbang the Wonderful by the way.

"hide and seek" refers to him/Zayle's shifting to the various heroes upon starting a game.
Second line refers to them being rarely heard, requiring RNG to do so.

Okay, now the part everyone was confused about.
New players start at Rank 50 (aka Brave Rooster) and cannot access Whizbang in their collection until they reach rank 25 (aka Angry Chicken) by playing or skipping the New Player ranks and its associated rewards.

The new lines reference his large pool of subpar decks and well, having 18 decks in one card.

Not quite young nor quite old, a story's that about to unfold.

Whizbang was going to be my first guess because of the whole "he is rarely heard" thing, but I didn't guess him because of the whole chicken thing. I don't think I ever would have thought of the angry chicken rank.

    Thanks!

I could win a game all by myself

Well, I need some help to get off the shelf

But I was just too good and had to go

I am still used in some shaman decks though

    Sylvanas Windrunner?

Is the “off a shelf” a pun about the “elf on a shelf” Xmas thing and she was an elf.

assuming the “too good and had to go” is a reference to being hall of famed

I second ArngrimUndyings reasoning for a HoF-card. My guess is Old Murk-Eye, who needs other murlocs to be effective.

Oh yeah that makes more sense - Murloc Shaman still being a thing & having Charge (to win the game in one hit). Early congratulations!

    Everyfin is Awesome?

Same basic principles as Murk-Eye in that you need murlocs to be effective, and a full board + 2 of these at reduced mana is an OTK. Not sure about the "had to go" if that's not being HoFed...

    Faceless Corruptor?

It was game-winning if played on turn 5, but it required a minion. Later it got nerfed, but it's still good in Shaman decks.

Both wrong. It has nothing to do with murlocs, I meant anchorm4n was close in that it needs other minions to be useful.

    Giggling Inventor?

Can "win the game by itself" in that it's an unbeatable wall of taunts (doubly so in Shaman decks with Corrupt the Waters) plus adds a juicy Mutate target or with stuff like Bog Slosher can bounce back to your hand for even more taunts. Had to go in that it got nerfed, and per your hint does need some actual damage-dealing minions to be truly useful. Also the art looks like the annoy-o-tron is sitting on a shelf?

Alright last guess then I'm out of ideas: Mogu Fleshshaper?

Can win the game if you can drop on turn 4/5 + Mutate, which requires the help of other minions to reduce cost. Also got nerfed but some shaman decks still run it (I know I still run 1 in my Galakrond Shaman and it's still pretty darn useful much of the time)

Okay TRULY last guess then I'll let others take a stab since this is what my 4th or 5th guess: Sea Giant?

Got nerfed with the other giants during Alpha and, like Mogu, gets its cost reduced by minions on the field.

Well, the only thing I can think of that ArngrimUndying hasn't said yet is Corridor Creeper.

It was broken when released, it requires minions to die, it was nerfed, but it's still good (I guess?) in Evolve Shaman.

Okay I feel like this meme with my convoluted logic but:

Image result for always sunny conspiracy meme

    Harbinger Celestia?

The reverse text because she mirrors whatever your opponent puts down. Also a totally useless tech cards that no one has ever played ever, not even for the memes. The "shipwreck" is a reference to people's generally giving "nautical" themes to space (i.e. astronaut = star sailor; the various "seas" and "trenches" on the moon/other planets). The "deadly spike" is a reference to her flavor text about once being a unicorn.

You know what? I don't care if this is "wrong" - in my heart it's right and that's what matters, so for the first time ever this card gave someone something useful lol.

    Camouflaged Dirigible?

Bad tech card in that most mech decks (currently) are hyper-aggro so effectively useless at 6 mana plus the effect itself is so situational

The reversed lines are the "camouflage"

"Different/alike" in that it's a mech, but maybe shouldn't be given the goblin pilots so inconsistent with cards like Omega Defender where Blizz sometimes focuses on the pilot and sometimes on the machine

And there's a giant spike on the front of the ship

I'll ask that if it's not this or Void Ripper perhaps a more substantive hint/more lines? There are a LOT of truly terribly tech cards so guessing could take a while....

Neither of those, but I'll give a few hints, no problem:

    - There are cards similar to it flavor/name-wise, but their effects are noticeably different
    - The "deadly spike" is a crucial part of the card's effect, not just its art
    - It's not a minion!

If it proves too hard, I'll add the reason for the backward lines.

It's "blue".  It's a wild card.  You have to power it up.  Depending on its power it can summon either 1, 2, or 3 minions.

    Frostwolf Warlord?

"Shares its strength" i.e. has the same effect as Heroic Innkeeper (who has a better face) - gets stronger with "friends" i.e. other minions. I'm not sure about the overdrive - would suggest maybe Rush or Charge?

    Bloodsail Howler?

Shares all the stats (2 mana 1/1) with Captain's Parrot which would fit thematically about being pirate "adventurers" together.

The more pirate "friends" the stronger it is

    Has rush i.e. "overdrive"

Kind of a long shot, but Faceless Summoner?

Although 1 more man, has the same 5/5 stats as the adventurous Elise the Trailblazer. And perhaps the "facial feautres" crack is about the minion being face-less. Also the summoning of another minion could help with survival if a better target gets summoned?

[EDIT] Where did anchorm4n's post go?

    No to Wargear or Zilliax.

    1) I did confirm that the card you're looking for is indeed a Mech.

    2) "Creature" doesn't necessarily mean some creepy crawly.  I just needed something to rhyme with "feature".  So, what's confirmed so far is that this female minion has the same stats (mana, attack, and health) as the Mech with no face and makes an appearance in an Adventure.

    3) Yes, it does have an interaction with other minions.

If it helps, this is the original two lines I had before I finalized the riddle that doesn't mention the female at all:

My power is one of a kind among all these creatures,

What?  You think I'm ugly?!  I don't even have facial features.

See you in the next dimension...

Man this clue has me asking "does that count as a robot's face?" WAY more than I ever would have thought...

Faithful Lumi? The female adventurous counterpart with the same stats being Reliquary Seeker from League of Explorers?

No to Faithful Lumi and Fel Cannon.

I would personally consider "facial features" as anything resembling eyes, nose, mouth, etc.  The Mech you're looking for has none of these qualities.  Also, its interaction with friendly minions isn't about giving or receiving additional stats.

See you in the next dimension...

I'm tapping out on this one - I've looked at every single Adventure (Blackrock, Naxxramas, Explorers, & Karazhan) minion that's obviously female and cannot find any faceless mechs that match their stats who also positively interact with other minions (in a way that isn't just a stat boost).

Maybe I'm missing something - a minion that's canonically female but that I don't recognize as such or a mech that I think has a face that perhaps you don't? But I am all out of guesses here so good luck everyone else!

Yeah!  Anima Golem is corrrect.  MurlocAggroB is up next.

Also, to clear up the confusion, the only other minion seen in the entire game with a 6 mana 9/9 stat line is Nalaa the Redeemer, found only in the Witchwood adventure.

    Hmmm Captain Hooktusk?

The "inverse of old" perhaps being Cursed Castaway - "inverse" being dead (rather than alive) and have rush + draw (rather than drawing rushes). Also the summoning effect is firing the pirates out of cannons.

Also not Hooktusk. I can start giving hints in a bit if no one gets it. I will say that all four lines of the riddle are important.

Wow, I really stumped everyone. In the interest of moving the game along, I'll break down the lines.

    It's a sticky minion.

It's similar to a minion from an older set.

    It's about to launch.

It's something fired from a cannon.

A man is lying on the street, some punks chopped off his head

I'm the only one who stops to see if he's dead.

It's an inverted Shielded Minibot that's literally and figuratively about to launch.

Simple and small, that’s my style

    I don’t do a lot, (my name isn’t kyle)

I have low stats and a low cost

I couldn’t win any fight, even against a moth

Just a heads up, Kyle doesn't mean anything, I just needed something to rhyme with "style".

    I have a Basic brother I can't beat.

Play me alone and I'm not cheap.

Clear the board early and I'd be good,

If that was something my class even could.

    Volcanic Lumberer?

Basic brother would be Ironbark Protector at 1 more attack + 1 lower cost

Need to reduce the cost per effect for it to be playable

A big board clear could have you playing this super early since it count minions on both sides

But Druid struggles with real (cheap) board clear

    Is it Treespeaker?

    When it's time to rumble - it's a card from Rastakhan's Rumble

    I won't ever mumble. - it's a treeSPEAKER, no mumbling here

My power creates mighty out of that which was humble, - buffing the treants into ancients

And before you leave your enemies will crumble! - no hint here, but "leave" is close to "leaf" which fits the druid theme

    Alright, here's an easy one:

    I'm a staple, I'm tier 1

Many games I have single-handedly won

Some people call me a spell on a stick

Surprising opponents gives me the kick

Sometimes I f* up Anduin without a single whack

If nothing else I provide you with a snack

Please don't send me to the hall of fame

Cause without me Hearthstone would be way too tame

This one might be a bit easy, but I had a lot of fun writing it!

There once was an inventor named Brown

    Who tinkered a robot clown

    But the robot he tinkered

Was a bit of a stinker

And both were kicked out town

    Baron Geddon?

Made of fire (so "hot") and art looks like he has a tail of fire, "proud maid" is Jaina Proudmoore (who has a lot of elemental synergy), and does 2 dmg to all enemies.

Fiery minion that obviously has a long tail, Mage card, "cheap treats" would be getting value from cheap spells, and "up to 2" is the deal 2 dmg effect

Nice! Since we’re trying out new riddle modes, I’ve always loved cryptograms. For those who are unfamiliar it’s a letter-swapping cipher puzzle:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptogram

So solve the puzzle and you’ll know the card.

Welp guess that was easy! Good job DestroyerR.

For everyone else, when unscrambled the message was:

Step forward. Confess! Once I was a mere servant of the Light. Now I alone stand in judgement. Arise my Four Horsemen and let us deliver our Grave Vengeance!

ETA: Did this suck? I always liked these kind of ciphers but if they aren't everyone else's thing I will avoid repeating this idea - just let me know.

Generally a good way to start is with the common short words  - like if you see one letter by itself, it HAS to be "I" or "A". 3-letter words are often "the" or "and" so you can match them up like that. So in mine you could have seen the "d" by itself and then a 3-letter "dys" and gotten that was "a" and "and". Now you also know that y = n and s = d (plus that since d = a, it must be that v = i since that's another letter by itself) and then gone on from there with other longer words filled in.

But "D" could have been "I". and "dys" could have been "Its"

There is never a single answer, there are just too many possibilities.

Well not really since in that case s = s and you can't have a letter equal itself. But yes a big part of the puzzle is trying out different combinations to figure out what makes sense and what's the most likely to be true. Starting the puzzle mean looking for what's common/frequent in the English language (i.e. the most common letters are r, s, t, l, n, & e & common words and such). Like in that one it could have been "ink" but then if you tried to slot a "k" in where the "d" should be a bunch of other words wouldn't make any sense. And that's the crux of this kind of puzzle: each individual word might have many possibilities, but the likelihood of the entire puzzle making any sense (or even making actual words) when you get letters wrong is nill.

But yeah that's fine if others agree this wasn't a good fit I don't have to do another one. No big deal

Cryptograms are cool, but don’t really work when you have a descrambler on the internet :P

    Next riddle:

Who was the first to mention HS’s recurring flavorful detail?

Polymorph - basic so has to be first I assume?

There was going to be a pun in this flavor text, but it just came out baa-d.

    Felsoul Inquisitor?

Everyone expects an inquisition reference. Calling out how there's about four-hundred thousand Monty Python jokes in flavour texts.

    Hmm. Turns out he's dead.

A bit out-of-the-box, but Huge Toad?

A lot, if not all, of Matt Dixon's Hearthstone card art have little frogs hidden somewhere in the picture.
e.g. Tasty Flyfish or Ice Cream Peddler
Huge Toad could be the very frog that appears on these card, albeit younger.

No to both. Another hint: “flavorful detail” has a double meaning

    Giant Mastodon?

Still salty about it not being the "Year of the Mastodon."

So the double meaning is salt as a seasoning and as an emotion that we have all experienced I'm sure

    Funnel cakes.

Darkshire Alchemist was the first card to use the joke in its flavour text, while Undercity Huckster was the first to use the joke in its quotes. The joke comes from Refreshment Vendor, who most certainly does not give you funnel cakes.

    Refreshment Vendor, I suppose.

I think it'd be kinda bull if it's not that but I was otherwise right (assuming I am right), since I solved the riddle but I'd be giving the answer to the next person who comments. Just sayin'. There's a reason I did my base covering.

It has been a day and MurlocAggroB has yet to post a riddle. Should we continue with someone else or give MurlocAggro a big more time?

Sorry, I was sick and in bed all day yesterday. This should be fairly easy.

In a draft I'm commonly used.

My effect is abusive but never abused.

I might not beat over a yeti,

But I can ensure your weapon is ready.

To be clearer, "ready" isn't a very important word. It was more just a great rhyme for yeti.

Given that it's been almost a day, I can give a hint.

"Weapon" doesn't necessarily mean actual weapon cards. That said, I wasn't being misleading - that line is still a hint.

    Still nothing?

Is it an issue with the riddle or just a lack of interest?

Probably not about you or the riddle, just a general lack of interest.

    Anyway, is it Hoard Pillager?
