She can protect humans without being a human herself. Think about a color and a creature type that are commonly associated with protection.
I've been having a blast with Radha, Heart of Keld. In combination with Azusa, Lost but Seeking you can ramp quite a lot and her activated ability is no joke if you manage to give her trample in the endgame.

My favourite commander is feather the redeemed. Casting the same spells over and over generating value over time and protecting all your creatures is really fun and unique.
