Is this a smart buy for a new player? Kinda scared ill screw up the draft and just be wasting my precious gold. Curious what you think.
After reading some guides and installing this draft helper https://go.overwolf.com/arena-tutor-ppc/ I tried my luck. I ended up with quite a nice white & black deck and went 3-3. 1000 gems and some nice cards to keep!
Thanks for the tips guys, it was indeed worth the gold. With 10.000 gold on the line a run feels exciting, will surely play more limited.
If you haven't done this already there are a ton of free pack codes for every set available. Here's the link to the codes. https://outof.cards/magic-arena/1488-want-3-free-core-set-2021-packs-core-set-2021-is-now-live-on-mtg-arena
Drafting is a bit of an acquired taste and a little learning curve to be successful in terms of money spent. New players should invest in a mastery pass (20$) and since it's a new season you have plenty of time to make the most of it. You earn a few free draft tokens in the process.
For drafting some people love it, I do it rarely but I"m not a fan. Would rather play constructed decks. I get more rage from terrible draft RNG or losing to some absurd opponent's draft deck. I'm also bitter from years ago when I took second in a draft to some fat prick who 'needed to get his inhaler from the car' right before drafting and his deck was pretty much a standard deck that no one saw the cards for.
Damn that loss must have sucked. Good story though :)
Throwing in my two cents.
As KANSAS and BaalTrap have pointed out, drafts are 100% worth it. I'm not particularly amazing at drafting decks but I do just love the format and don't mind having the occasional bad run if I make some bad picks. Experimenting with the format can be quite a fun challenge and realistically is the best way to get better at it.
ChannelFireball always has always had relevant content to help with drafting. Here's the (currently 1) stuff associated with M21. I haven't checked it out for this set, but back in one of the Ravnicas, I had success using a guide they produced.

It is definitely worth buying drafts. Yes if you screw up you could waste gold, but if you learn how to get good at draft you can earn a ton of extra gold and gems.
If you "rare draft" (pick all the rares you see) you will get a decent amount of value from your pick phase (usually between 5 and 7 rares/mythics). It may be hard for you then, but as Limited is the best way to enhance your collection in Arena, you'll have to learn to play draft. So I would say that learning it with a discount is never a bad deal.
Rare drafting is not as valuable I think in the digital format. In real life events this created a great opportunity to get good trades to make the decks you really want to make. I scored some nice outsized trades when I used to go by snatching valuable cards I had no intention of playing in the draft.
