Legends of Runeterra's third set, Call of the Mountain came out just a little over a week ago. With it brought some new cards and our second new region to the game, Targon. With a new set comes some new art, and I think we can all agree that Targon has a really sweet art style. As always, the artwork in this article is found on Riot's partner site, Six More Vodka (which has seen a significant overhaul since the previous installment in this series). Links to every artist's Artstation or Deviantart pages will also be provided.
Gift Giver by Gerald Parel and Monika Palosz
Our first piece of art in this article is a collaborative project between Gerald Parel and Monika Palosz on Gift Giver, one of the new Targon cards in the set (which incidentally happens to be the last collectible card in the set in our database for the set).
Arbiter of the Peak by Michal Ivan
All the way on the opposite end of the spectrum in size is Arbiter of the Peak from Michal Ivan.
Fledgling Stellacorn by Valentin Gloaguen
Unicorns are all sorts of strange creatures exist in the realm of Targon. That's why there's Fledgling Stellacorn with sketch art from Valetin Gloaguen.
Diana (Level 2) by Gerald Parel
Here's one of the new Targon champions, Diana in her level 2 form, courtesy of Gerald Parel.
Mountain Sojourners by Gerald Parel
Also from Gerald is the concept art for Mountain Sojourners, the most supportive friend you could have. She supports everyone. Literally.
Resplendant Stellacorn by Monika Palosz
That Stellacorn fledgling has all grown up it seems. Here's Resplendant StellacornBADCARDNAME from Monika Palosz. Looks quite splendant, doesn't it?
Tyari the Traveler by Gerald Parel
Tyari the Traveler is a card with an extremely interesting story, both in art design and internal game lore. Tyari (which is the one holding the staff) climbs the mountain (as the other two members of his group are visible in the artwork of Mountain Sojourners) to visit the Arbiter of the Peak (of which Tyari himself can be seen in the full art) and becomes The Traveler, as evident by the fact that The Traveler is wielding Tyari's staff.
In human form, Tyari is a male with a masculine voice. After becoming The Traveler however, Tyari has a feminine voice. This appears to be a reference to the fact that the voice actress for both of the cards, Maddie Taylor, is a transgender woman. This is further referenced by several voice lines used for both cards.
Stygian Onlooker by João David Fernandes
Our first non-Targon card of the article, Stygian Onlooker, with sketch art courtesy of someone appearing in this series for the very first time, João David Fernandes.
Trundle by Claudiu-Antoniu Magherusan
Back to the regulars for this series however, Claudiu-Antoniu Magherusan comes back with one of the new Freljord champions, Trundle in both his level 1 and 2 forms.
Duskrider by William Gist
Nightfall is coming. Er, well is actually already came with the set. Anyway, here's Duskrider, which is one of the cards that utilizes the Nightfall mechanic. Sketch art courtesy of William Gist.
Broadbacked Protector by Claudiu-Antoniu Magherusan
Broadbacked Protector notably went through a change between this sketch art and its finished artwork. This art appears to depict the vastaya holding the tree with its hands and not its back with the tree more horizontally aligned. In the finished artwork, this is changed to have the tree lie on the vastaya's back instead with the vastaya holding the tree by a branch and the tree itself being more vertically aligned.
Aurelion Sol by Michal Ivan
Giant space dragons are awesome. That's why we have both forms of Aurelion Sol here from Michal Ivan.
Inviolus Vox by William Gist
You like dragons so much, how about another? This time, Inviolus Vox by William Gist.
Mentor of the Stones by Alessandro Poli
Alessandro Poli provided this concept art for Mentor of the Stones. I'm not sure the stones need to be mentored, but he seems to be good at what he does.
The Infinite Mindsplitter by William Bao and Michal Ivan
Our next one is a collaborative project between William Bao and Michal Ivan. Two heads to work on a dragon with two heads, also known as The Infinite Mindsplitter.
Leona (Level 1) by Chris Kintner and Gerald Parel
Another collaborative effort comes from Chris Kintner and Gerald Parel to create Diana's "sister, but not actually sister", Leona.
Leona (Level 2) by Gerald Parel
For Leona in her level 2 form though, Gerald had done the project by himself.
Lulu (Level 2) by Alessandro Poli
One of the new champions for Ionia, Lulu, comes to us from Alessandro Poli in her level 2 form.
Taric (Level 2) by Gerald Parel)
Gerald Parel had also provided the concept art for the fourth and final Targon champion to appear in this article, Taric in his level 2 form.

Up next are a series of concept arts from other artists that you won't find on Six More Vodka
Troll Scavenger by Forrest Imel
Forrest Imel provided this gif of the evolution of the artwork of Troll Scavenger
Squirrel by Dao Trong Le
Dao Trong Le provided a LOT of artwork you'll see at this point in the article. This Squirrel that you obtain from Whimsy! is just one example.
This squirrel underwent a lot of design changes from the situation of the artwork, the pose of the squirrel, the shading of its eyes, and the season of the year.
Young Witch by Dao Trong Le
Young Witch similarly went through a lot of changes of the perspective and pose of the rider.
Swore Squirrel by Dao Trong Le
Swole Squirrel went through a lot of the same changes as the regular Squirrel. At one point, the artwork appeared to be mirrored as seen in the first frame of the art process gif.
Fae Guide by Dao Trong Le
Fae Guide went through some significant changes over its span of development.
Porofly by Dao Trong Le
Porofly, the quintessential Poro card of each region (in this case, Targon) had some similar steps in its art development as well as a YouTube video of the artwork's creation process.
Mount Targon Board by Servando Lupini
Servando Lupini posted an earlier version of the portal VFX on the bottom-right part of the Targon gameboard (top) in comparison to the final version (bottom).
Giddy Sparkleologist by Dao Trong Le
Giddy Sparkleologist went through several of the same steps as Dao's other arts.
Tasty Faefolk by Dao Trong Le
And so does Tasty Faefolk.
Fuzzy Caretaker by Dao Trong Le
And our final card of the journey is Fuzzy Caretaker, which had a lot of poses made for it being ultimately Dao decided to just use a variation of the first one.
And that would concludes this huge concept art article of Call of the Mountain. I hope you enjoyed.
Comments
