Why are other companies even trying to make their own digital card games? They are just destined to fail because everyone will compare them to HS which is already established as THE card game. Hearthstone is made just too well for others to succeed. You can look at Gwent, Shadowverse and Artifact. They tried and they failed. They are now dead games. Sorry but it's the truth.
Shadowverse is actually doing quite well in Asia. GWENT is also in an extremely healthy state and will be in even better shape as it launches on mobile in a couple weeks. Especially with CDPR about to get a ton of money from Cyberpunk, GWENT will not simply die off.
The only truly dead game you listed is Artifact.
There was plenty of hype for Artifact. It failed because of its design and business model, not because Hearthstone.
Edit: MtG Arena released around the same time and seems to be doing fine.
Just so you know the game will be very f2p friendly. the riot business model is that core game play mechanics are mostly earned by playing and cosmetics are paid.
So if you like league or hs/magic the game seems very neat specially on the art side there is an intro every time a champion levels up and the game is both complex and simple as I seen it.
hope it succeeds both cause I want to play it and have fun and cause it will finally make bli$$ard make their game more f2p friendly and/or add more features that are not recycled..
Wonder what some of the key words like "Fearsome" and "Overwhelm" mean?
I watched a bit of Trump's stream yesterday and if I understood correctly, Fearsome means that small minions cannot block it (not sure of the exact condition, but it was an attack or health threshold, I think) and Overwhelm is like Trample in MtG: blocking does not stop all damage, but only up to the health of the blocker, with any remainder damaging the player.
Like MtG and unlike Hearthstone, the defender assigns blockers, so I guess keywords like that are necessary to be able to get damage through without always having to clear an opponent's board.
We have a keyword glossary right here: https://outof.cards/forums/legends-of-runeterra/runeterra-general/1796-legends-of-runeterra-keyword-glossary
Fearsome = Can only be blocked by units with 3 or more Attack.
Overwhelm = Excess damage this deals to another unit is dealt to the enemy Nexus (hero). Basically Trample from MTG.
I feel like the name is too generic and the board looks to boring compared to HS. I doubt this will last very long.
It seems they are purposefully aiming at one of the main complaints in Hearthstone which is too much rng, that being said:
”
”
this is a risky move on their part. How else are they planning to make money? This incentivizes netdecking and discourages players from experimenting with new decks. In the long run it may cause the game to fail economically.
Blizzard needs to be careful. LoR could become a real threat.
Will be fun to watch these two games compete. (:
I don't really get very excited about new TCGs anymore because they all feel the same. Gwent is probably the most unique TCG I have ever played simply for the fact that there is no attacking, and minions/creatures don't have power/toughness or Attack/Health, but instead they just have a number on them.
But at the end of the day, all of these games just feel like different variations of Magic: the Gathering, the first TCG. Don't get me wrong, I really like hearthstone, and I almost got into Gwent and Keyforged (the only reason I didn't is because I already play Hearthstone and Magic), but I just don't expect this game to mechanically be very different from all the TCGs we have access to now.
Being a member of the hellhole that is League of Legends, I will definitely give this a try. However, I'm not giving up Hearthstone entirely for this, because Hearthstone has honestly pulled me through some tough times, and the game and it's forums had been a place of solace for me.
I'm also basically addicted to the game, but that's besides the point.
Artwork is nice.
Art and gameplay look pretty fantastic. If it holds up in the balance department I might just ditch Hearthstone permanently
It seems more similar to MTG than to HS, in terms of gameplay's complexity. Being on mobile would indeed be the main reason that will grant it the chance to eat on HS playerbase, expecially on oriental market since it's tied to LoL.
Let's see if LoR will be a good competitor that will force Blizzard to finally evolve HS, since Artifact was a complete fail and this has already so many things the community asked for ages that are implemented into it since the start (a better economic system, decktracker and personal stats, more interaction between players, no RNG everywhere and the like).
Maybe the animations are a bit too "loud" but seems good and entertaining.
I think the mix of Hearthstones Mana management + Magics turn management might be what many will enjoy. It would fit the niche between hardcore and casual... and there's a lot of space.
Go from being upset at Blizzard over China's influence to praising a game made by a company controlled directly by the Chinese government O>O
fabricated outrage and all that
but really people are praising this because it looks good and they don't care about politics
Big up for having android version. Hopefully it will not be so much delayed after the PC version release.
