Respawn Entertainment, the creators of Apex Legends, has announced that they have rolled out changes to fix cheating!

Shareable controller configs have been around since the launch of Apex on Steam, which coincided with the launch of Season 7 on November 4, 2020. These config files allowed players to gain benefits while using controllers over keyboard and mouse players, such as auto-aim, automated character movement, and 180 degree snap-aiming (no scope much?), all thanks to accessibility options within Steam's controller binding interface.

Bye bye, macros on controllers! Being able to perfectly perform actions that would normally only be possible on a keyboard and mouse via controller no longer being a thing is huge.

It's Not Just Steam Controller Configs

Players have been able to edit configuration files provided by the game itself as well, which would allow for greater movement than would normally be possible. Respawn has previously semi-acknowledged some of the issues surrounding these config edits, with the official rules of their esports program, the Apex Legends Global Series, in which they have a small section regarding which files are allowed to be edited, and which lines are allowed to be touched.

Quote From Respawn

Q7.6 Game Files Competitors may only add or edit the following Game files:

  • local.cfg
  • autoexec.cfg
  • videoconfig.txt

Competitors may only add or edit the following lines in the files specified above:

  • fps_max
  • mat_letterbox_aspect_goal
  • mat_letterbox_aspect_threshold
  • "setting.csm_enabled" "0"

The competitive integrity of the game outside of esports can now benefit from the new improvements! What will the hot topic be in the Apex community now that we no longer have to talk about the controller cheaters.

Heads up, legends. We've been rolling out some changes to @PlayApex to better protect the game's competitive integrity.

We are making changes to remove automated strafing on controller and will also be making changes to prevent the chaining of cfg files via the +exec command during game time. In other words, we are disabling the ability to use some configs that would allow for a greater range of movement than is usually possible within the game.

We want to be clear: the use of third-party tools, hardware, firmware, or software that automates game mechanics for a competitive edge over other Apex players is considered cheating and is unacceptable. As such, we will continue to evaluate potential exploits and take further action as needed.
