Roleplaying as a Rogue
"One last job," you whisper to yourself. Your mark stops moving, seemingly having heard your quiet lamentation. Idiot!, you think, ducking around a corner. You wait to hear their footsteps again before slipping back into the street. One last job, and that would be the end of it. You close the distance. No more wanted posters for you: a few bribes here and there, and you could dare show your face again around the city. As your blade slides between their shoulders, you briefly consider that maybe, deep down, you actually enjoyed this life.
If this sounds interesting to you, consider a Rogue. Deadly in their efficiency and knowledgeable in many skills, this class is a prowler of the shadows.
Note: The Origin character/Companion Astarion is a Rogue.
Class Features at 1st Level
- Starting Hit Points: 8 + your Constitution modifier
- Proficiencies:
- Light armor, Simple weapons, Hand Crossbows, Longswords, Rapiers, and Shortswords
- Dexterity and Intelligence Saving Throws
- Four skills from the following list: Acrobatics, Athletics, Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Investigation, Perception, Performance, Persuasion, Sleight of Hand, and/or Stealth
- Expertise with two skills you are Proficient in, doubling your Proficiency bonus added to checks made with those skills.
- The ability to Sneak Attack in melee or ranged combat, dealing additional damage. This damage increases as you level in Rogue.
- Sneak Attacks require that you have Advantage against the target, possibly because you are hidden or they are surprised.
- You also can Sneak Attack enemies that are within 1.5 meters of one of your allies (implying they are distracted by combat), as long as you yourself are not at a Disadvantage.
Class Features at Higher Levels
- Hit Points at Later Levels: 5 + your Constitution modifier
- At level 2 you gain Cunning Action: Dash and Cunning Action: Disengage, allowing you to use them as a bonus action instead.
- Dash doubles your movement rate for the turn, while Disengage lets you back away from an enemy without provoking a reprise attack.
- At level 3, the Rogue chooses an archetype to focus their talents further, determining their subclass.
- At levels 4, 8 and 12, you can increase one of your Ability scores by 2, two Ability scores by 1, or choose a Feat, which can provide you bonuses to Ability scores and skills simultaneously.
- At level 5 Rogues gain Uncanny Dodge, allowing you to use your reaction for the turn to take half-damage from an incoming attack.

Subclasses
Rogues have three archetypes to choose from, denoting the areas they excel in and how they apply their trade. They are: Thief, Arcane Trickster, and Assassin.
- Thieves are your typical burglars or criminals, but it can also speak of a treasure hunter or explorer.
- At level 3 you gain an additional bonus action and resistance to falling damage.
- *Not revealed yet.*
- Arcane Tricksters have learned the ways of the spell, to better sneak into places or deceive enemies.
- At level 3 you gain the ability to cast spells and some spell slots, just like a Wizard would but to a smaller degree.
- It uses your Intelligence modifier for spellcasting.
- At level 3 you also gain a special version of the spell Mage Hand, which is invisible and can perform additional tasks such as picking a lock, retrieving items from a container (or someone's pocket), or to disarm a trap.

- At level 3 you gain the ability to cast spells and some spell slots, just like a Wizard would but to a smaller degree.
- Assassins are trained in the art of death itself. These are your spies or bounty hunters; efficient as they are deadly.
- *Not revealed yet.*
Preferred Ability Scores
Dexterity is of the utmost importance to a Rogue: they are light on their feet and tend to use finesse weapons like daggers. Whether they want Intelligence or Charisma next depends on their role in the party: an Arcane Trickster uses Int for spells, while the other subclasses might want Cha for interacting with/deceiving people. Wisdom is an okay skill for a Rogue, while Strength can be ignored if you're not planning to use a heavier melee weapon.
Multiclassing Suggestions
Rogues can bring their expertise and finesse to other classes quite readily, although it is by no means a requirement. Additional damage via Sneak Attack, bonus actions and more access to skills are a welcome addition to many a character.
Rogue & Barbarian
May seem a weird combo, but Barbarians have a lot of ways to gain Advantage in melee combat; this in turn gives them more opportunities to Sneak Attack. Cunning Action: Dash combined with the Barbarian's extra movement allows them to cover great distances very quickly.
Rogue & Ranger
Can double-down on the "sneaky sneaky, stabby stabby" flavor they're both capable of. Combine the Rogue's Assassin subclass with the Ranger's Gloom Stalker to become a true terror of the darkness.
Rogue & Wizard
Is a solid combination if the Rogue takes the Arcane Trickster subclass. Gaining spells based on their (presumably high) Intelligence, the Wizard further opens up their repertoire; for a class looking to have the right answer to every situation, this is huge.
