Mistwraiths

With Risen Mists coming out, I was trying to brainstorm how to build around Mistwraiths...which made me realize I didn't know exactly how some things worked out, so I jumped into the client to test them out.  Here are my observations in case anyone is interested:

  • Mist's Call and Chronicler of Ruin on a Mistwraith works exactly like you'd expect: it plus every other Mistwraith goes up +1/+0.
  • The aforementioned also work on Wraithcaller (assuming you hit allegiance). In other words, its allegiance acts like a conditional "when summoned". I don't know if all allegiances work like that; I have a vague memory of it not working for a different card.
  • For both L2 Kalista and The Harrowing, it will not factor in the buff when calculating what is "strongest"--in other words, Mistwraith is just a 2/2 in the rez pool even though it instantly increases when it hits the battlefield. However if either of these effects pulls a 4/3 Wraithcaller--which is obviously a much more achievable target--that will in turn summon a new non-ephemeral Mistwraith similar to how The Rekindler works.
  • If you run out of board space--e.g., The Harrowing created an ephemeral Wraithcaller in your 6th slot, so there's no room for the Mistwraith it summons--your Mistwraith is obliterated, but its brief presence does seem to "count" towards your global buff.

In summary: if you want to make a concerted effort to embiggen your wraiths, I think you are looking to focus on Wraithcallers.

  • I can recall playing against a fair number of Mistwraith decks shortly after the Kalista rework. I don't know if those decks are still at all popular, but they were already pretty good thanks to the fact that Shadow Isles had been such a strong region for so much of the game's existence, which in turn made playing a mostly or entirely SI deck very easy to do. In my mind, that was always the funny thing about a card like Wraithcaller. It generates a lot of stats for its cost, and it's allowed to do that because the Allegiance keyword is supposed to be something of a drawback - you're getting a powerful effect by trading away access to some second region (or splashing a second region but risking a misfire). But for SI, that really hasn't been a drawback at all.

    Risen Mists seems like a really potent finisher for a deck like that - in the late game, summon one or two massive fearsome units at burst speed (potentially buffing your board at the same time) and then open attack. Because the Allegiance "penalty" is not a uniform offset of a card's power level, Wraithcaller is probably a little too good for what it's supposed to be. If this deck becomes really strong, that's the first place I'd expect to see a nerf.

    More generally, though, it seems like Allegiance is not something Riot has a great handle on. They've struggled with balancing Basilisk Rider and Vanguard Bannerman, and other Allegiance cards like Kinkou Wayfinder and Yordle Grifter have been a big part of meta decks from time to time. The bonus effects probably need to be a bit more narrow to ensure they aren't so easily abused.

  • I feel Risen Mists is just a bit too expensive for what it does.
    Sure, it is a good adition to Mistwraith concept but i am afraid it won't make it much better unless it gets more support.

    The only way i can picture a Mistwraith deck working is through Iceborn Legacy
    But since Iceborn Legacy is a slow card now, i would not get my hopes up to pull this combo off consistently.

  • Your decklist looks somewhat decent at the very least, may actually work.

    I would include 1x or 2x Atrocity.

  • I wouldn't bother with Iceborn Legacy - I don't think it's actually that hard to get a lot of big Mistwraiths without it, and it will screw up the consistency of the Wraithcaller, which is the real workhorse of the deck. That said, I love the idea of Atrocity - pairs very reasonably with Risen Mists for a sort of game-ending Pyroblast type effect.

     

  • Iceborn Downsides:
    1- Cost too much so is hard to find a turn to play it;
    2- The longer it takes to play -> less return on the investment; 
    3- Slow speed, so it can be denied by killing the target.

    Iceborn Upsides:
    1- Makes Wraithcaller extremely resilient against dmg based board wipes;
    2- It will almost always trade 2/1 as there are many untis with 3 attack being played right now but very few with 4 attack.

    I am not sure if Iceborn Legacy is worth the slot or not, probably not, thats something that it will demand some experiment.

    Spectral MatronBADCARDNAME + Wraithcaller shenanigans?

  • I've been playing Mistwraiths for the last week or so. It's not a high winrate or anything, but I think it's incorrect to go so all-in on the Mistwraiths. I can definitely say that Iceborn Legacy is almost never usable. I should probably just ditch my one copy. It has never won me a game that I would not have already won.

    Anyways, here's the deck:

    Vengeance is there because you need a way to kill a TWE, among other things. Ruination is there because you need a way to deal with Ashe/Sej and/or Deep.

  • Even if Iceborn Legacy were working now, I think it's exactly the card you would drop to make room for Risen Mists.

  • I waffled back from Iceborn Legacy to Sumpworks Map under the premise that this wants to be a burn deck, but I'm not 100% sold.  Other considerations:

    • Might turns a bad block into a trade and/or some nexus damage
    • Pack Mentality has similar logic as above
    • Harsh Winds will make 2 units unable to block fearsome, plus some utility
    • Troll Chant like the above but only 1 unit and cheaper
    • Fury of the North
    • Atrocity is fast speed direct nexus damage
    • Darius might just be a 10/6 overwhelm if all goes according to plan
    • Any rally effect, but in particular Katarina, Lucian, and Shunpo
    • En Garde, to either assassinate a trouble backline unit (Ezreal wrecks us) or force bad blocks
