Quote From Legends of Runeterra What’s Next for Runeterra
Gauntlets - JUNE
Gauntlets are limited-time competitive modes with unique deckbuilding rules.
- The first Gauntlet arrives June 26 (patch 1.4) and will use standard deckbuilding rules as we test-drive the underlying tech, while the second to join the rotation will challenge you to build a deck using no more than one copy of each card.
- Gauntlets will be live over weekends (3-4 days), with weekly swaps as we add more formats.
Labs - JULY
Labs are experimental game modes with more extreme gameplay changes—a more light-hearted, casual take on modes.
- The first lab debuts July 8 (patch 1.5), and involves unusual champion team ups, unpredictable strategies, and an accelerated start to the action.
Events - JULY
From time to time we’ll have special thematic events that bundle together cosmetic items, quests, and potentially a Gauntlet or Lab—a month-long celebration full of cool new stuff to check out.
- During an event, every player will have access to a series of limited-time rewards that can be unlocked just by playing.
- There will also be an Event Pass in the store that adds even more rewards to unlock along the way.
- LoR’s first event takes place in July, but we’re keeping the theme under wraps for now.
New cards & regions - AUGUST
We’ve said before that each expansion will add a new region, plus more cards and champions for existing regions. But we’ve also been looking at ways to make getting that content even more impactful, and keep the meta evolving as new cards enter the mix. Our goal is to release
more cards, more frequently, creating back-to-back waves of new mechanics and champions.
- Starting in August, we’ll introduce new cards every 2 months.
- Every 6 months, we’ll introduce the next region.
- Each new region will each be the focus for 3 content releases.
And more!
In 2020, we’re planning to tackle a bunch of key features and improvements players have requested. Some of these will be quality of life improvements, while others are critical to supporting the future of Runeterra—especially its competitive scene.
- Master Rank LP improvements
- Patch 1.4
- Cross-shard friend challenge
- Within the next few months
- Deckbuilder improvements (and yes, the ability to pick deckbox art)
- Cohesive update later in 2020
- Card Styles (cosmetic card modifications)
- Later in 2020
- Also coming this year:
- In-game leaderboards
- Player profiles
- Spectator
- In development:
- Tournaments
- Single-Player Experiences

this is great for LoR
maybe it will force hearthstone's hand to actually make improvements
but i'm loving LoR so far
We will get tournament mode in LoR, meanwhile in hearthstone *thinking Quinn and Valor*
imagine a new game having a tournament mode within a year where heartshtone after years notr even care about it KEKW
Amazing news!
(and that music <3)
So is the cosmetic stuff going to be like the card skins in undercards or is it going to be more card backs and arenas?
Oh wow what a great news! And now i'm running out of free time maintaining both account on HS and LoR. Maybe i should just focus on one, which one though..
Wow that’s some aggressive competition right there!
This makes me think once again that I have to give LoR a chance.
Unfortunately I did not get hooked yet. Something about HS keeps me in the tavern and my spare time doesn’t allow to be involved in 2 games at a level I would like.
Their approach to TCG content is just premium. I guess I’m simply overwhelmed lol
Amazing news! As long as they don't go the route of Hearthstone and just do tons of repeats of rulesets people don't like, Labs and Gauntlet will be great! Also, I hope that at one point they add some cosmetics that are rewards for winning a certain number of games in each mode. Like a board that can be unlocked by getting 30 7-win expeditions or something.
This is all SUPER exciting. As link said (maybe I should have responded) the Gauntlets are akin to Tavern Brawls in Hearthstone which is such a good idea for card games. A weekly mode that has a new spin on things is awesome. I just hope they do fewer repeats than Hearthstone does.
They're going to have the fastest card pool updates when compared to the other big games. Hearthstone gives us new cards every 4 months, Magic, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh are all roughly every 3 months. Granted, the updates appear to be smaller in size, but that is incredibly healthy for the game and the meta. That paired with Riot actively pushing a balance update every month, we've got some seriously awesome potential.
I'm just really hoping we get Arcade-themed card styles instead of just animation on top of the current cards. Change the art please and just give people the option to disable card styles entirely on the client-side so newer players won't get confused as much.
I think gauntlets are more like "heroic tavern brawls" and labs are more like tavern brawls.
I mean the first gauntlet is arena like deck building for 7 wins so.. it's the same concept.
IIRC Yu-gi-oh! has constant updates to its cardpool (boosters, tins, special decks, promo cards, etc..) and not only every 3 months. i don't play LoR anymore (played a lot in the beta) but is good to see some changes and new features because this help HS and other games to grow too.
Ah, I was only familiar with set launches, I never really got hard into yu-gi-oh and this was also many years ago. I had done a quick Google to look at their set release schedule and assumed that was the total story. Thanks for the correction
Gauntlets and Labs sound like different aspects of Hearthstone's Tavern Brawls, which is cool. Glad we're getting those sooner than later. Also, yay to "single-player experiences"!
New cards every two months sounds insane, on top of new cards + a new region every six months. How sustainable is that?
Frequent small batches of cards are a great idea, HS tried that out at the end of last year and it was great.
A new region every 6 months seems completely unsustainable. Introducing one new region/class/color/etc has proven notoriously difficult for other games, both in introduction and in upkeep. By the time LoR is as old as HS is now, it will have 15+ regions, each of which needs to be balanced in tandem with every other region. Good luck, Riot
The thing is, there are not that many regions left in Runeterra for them to add. The ones they have to add are Mt. Targon, Shurima, and Ixtal, with the Void likely being mixed into the other regions and Bandle City definitely not becoming a region, given that its Champions are being given to other regions. This means it will take them from 1.5 to 2 years to release all the regions, which is a fairly long time but definitely not as long as Hearthstone has been around. After those 2 years I'm sure they'll change how they do expansions to just include cards from every existing region.
This will mean somewhere between 9 and 11 regions, depending on how enthusiastic they are about combining regions, which is around the number of classes Hearthstone has.
They didnt say how many cards, it could be 2 per Region for example, guess we'll see
