  • Big Hearthstone Patch Planned for Later This Week - Around 30 Cards to Be Affected, Focus on Increasing Player Agency

It's the fact that Reno is most successful in non-highlander decks that is the issue, not the effect itself. Also, please let me get the pocket of the meta where Zarimi is not played, it's probably the deck I face most often in Legend.

Enthusiastic agreement with most of the above!

I recently discovered Splendor, which my family has been greatly enjoying. Simple enough to get right into, complex enough to develop strategies over time. If you like Catan, you'll probably like this one too.

I also love One Night: Ultimate Werewolf. It's an interactive game where the players collectively try to solve the mystery of who the werewolf is, but one or two players might be the werewolf themselves. It's all about detective work and bluffing.

As a huge fan of escape rooms, I have found a number of at-home escape room games you can play. My favorites are the Unlock! Escape Adventures made by Space Cowboys. These games use a free phone app in which you enter codes, get hints, etc. Very creative and fun.

I used to love the game Pandemic (a rare cooperative board game), but after the last few years ... it hits a bit different, you know?

  • Board Games/Tabletop Games

The deck-building game Dominion works well with 5 players; I've played with that many several times. I know that some TCG purists disparage Dominion because the meta is "solved", but I have a really fun time trying out new ways to build engines or try out new synergies with various cards even if there are obvious "optimal" strategies. The base game is really good, but there's also TON of expansions (Seaside is my favorite) that bring new cards and mechanics to the game. Replayability, because of the variety of cards you can bring in to any given game, is fairly high, IMO.

I also like Scythe and the box says it can be played with five people (although I've never played with that many so I can't tell you how it goes). If engine-building/exploration is your family's cup of tea, it's a good game with a decent amount of replyability (most the game-to-game variety come from the event cards). The hardest part for beginners is getting used to the turn flow, once you've got that down things move a lot faster.

My absolute favorite game is Once Upon a Time, but it's a little esoteric. It's collaborative/competitive storytelling, where each player has a hand of cards featuring story elements and has to weave those elements into the story as the storyteller, or try to interrupt the story with their own cards to take it down their path. Each player has an ending card they're trying to build towards, and the first player to empty their hand and organically steer the story to their ending wins. It can accomodate five players, but it's not for everyone.

I only play Standard, so I'm not sure how relevant these potential changes might be for Wild.

I have definitely been on the receiving end of some Wheel of DEATH!!! shenanigans, but I'm not sure how it should be changed. The problem is that after playing it, they play the 15/15 Lifesteal Taunt for free, then shuffle Symphonies into the deck.

I haven't encountered Timewinder Zarimi even once, so I'm not sure what the issue is here, although I can obvisouly see how it could be abused.

I love Reno and I don't think it needs a change. Yes, it's a powerful swing card, but it does not win games on its own. Plus, it can be defeated by shuffling Plagues. Also, you can play around it by not overcommiting to the board.

Speaking of "player agency," I LOVE that the current special event allows you to choose the Hearthstone path or the Battlegrounds path. As a player who avoids Battlegrounds entirely, this is very welcome!

  • Big Hearthstone Patch Planned for Later This Week - Around 30 Cards to Be Affected, Focus on Increasing Player Agency

At the moment I don`t play Standard (the meta it is too slow for my taste), but I have fun with Shadow Surimi Priest in Wild (became Legend this weak).

Normally I am always happy about nerfs because -> free dust.

At this point it is very difficult to "balance" Wild: When one very strong deck is nerfed, another deck takes its place. In Wild there are always some decks, which feel "op".

For this reason "balance" in Wild can in my opnion only be to prevent one deck to be so totally broken (most of the time combo decks), that the whole meta is warped around it.

At the moment there is no such deck, so Wild is "pretty balanced" at the moment. Still there are some decks which could be nerfed to give Wild a little bit of "fresh air" -> I think Bomb Rogue, Aggro Priest, Quest Mage, Even Paladin and Quest Warlock are candidates. We will see which decks get nerfed...

  • Big Hearthstone Patch Planned for Later This Week - Around 30 Cards to Be Affected, Focus on Increasing Player Agency

While this news is promising, we need to know the scope of the changes to make a complete decision. I'd be in favour of more nerfs than buffs personally. Also I do wonder what metrics Blizzard use to determine the power level of the first expansion per year. I personally found the metas of Forged in the Barrens, Sunken City and Festival of Legends somewhat boring and slow but maybe that's the power level Blizzard want to reach. We'll know on Thursday I guess but hey, 30 card changes can mean a lot of dust if most of them are nerfs.

  • Big Hearthstone Patch Planned for Later This Week - Around 30 Cards to Be Affected, Focus on Increasing Player Agency

Best Hearthstone news in ages! I should have been suspicious when I enjoyed the new Standard meta so much that I've played Tempo DH to legend - whenever a Wild main likes the Standard meta, nerfs are almost certain :D

That said, I'll stick to the Wild side of these news.

    • My biggest hope is that they finally pull the "once per game" plug on Time Warp. Reno Quest Mage has been torturing Wild players for quite some time and with the new 10 Mana spell they got to use their Parrots again. If you can't kill them by turn 7ish, they chain infinite turns and the best you can do is waste their time by not conceding. I've had it happen to me on turn 5. Ice Block, Frost Nova and friends don't help and don't forget they can be rediscovered. Yikes.
    • Speaking of which, Ice Block is a card people had on their nerf radar for a long time as well. If the Time Warp change is coming as expected, I don't think they'll touch Ice Block as well. I could picture them doing it the other way around though, basically giving Ice Block the "once per game" treatment and challenging players to kill the Mage twice before Time Warp shenanigans unfold. Possible, but unlikely since giving a non-legendary card "once per game" makes no sense whatsoever.
    • Mine Rogue is another candidate that has been left untouched for far too long imo. It also kills quite consistently around turn 5 and is hard to disrupt. There are a few ideas circling in the community on how to change it, my guess is they'll target Snowfall Graveyard or Necrium Blade.
    • Fruit Druid has lost some of its popularity these last 2-3 weeks but I'd still expect a nerf to Floop's Gloop. That card just can't stay alive in its current form with the latest rule change to Mana acquisition.
    • Big "maaaaaaaaybe?" when it comes to Miracle Rogue (no idea where to even start there) and Shudderwock (once per game?).
    • We already know that Zarimi gets touched so Aggro Shadow Priest will go back to the list from before Whizbang's Workshop. Personally, I had consistency problems with the Draggon version from day 1 and never really switched. I don't expect a nerf to Voidtouched Attendant, but I wouldn't rule it out either.
    • Reno, Lone Ranger is also a known target that I'm a bit sad about, but it has been crystal clear that this card would catch a bullet sooner or later right since its release. From what I hear from Standard players, a change to the Highlander mechanic would be favored by the community (so the card checks if your starting deck had no duplicates, not your current deck the moment the card is played). That would be cool for Wild where I haven't seen people run duplicates in Highlander decks. Personally I'm not so sure if they'll do that because a) wouldn't that mean they have to do it with all Highlander cards? and b) the other numerous nerfs in Standard might kill the Reno decks with duplicates anyway. My guess is Reno's effect will become symmetrical or get a complete overhaul.

All in all I'm hyped for this and I hope I won't get disappointed again. The reasoning behind the nerfs sounds amazing, lets hope the devs live up to their own standards. Worst that could happen is a bunch of dust lol

    Maybe it's just an error

  • Board Games/Tabletop Games

Scattergories is a fun one. It's about fast thinking and trying to think like your opponent as you write down answers that fit a specific category.

I've played it over screensharing and mic and friends and it's a fun time.

Will meta-balancing & tune-ups matter if the player-base is abandonning the ship?

  • Hearthstone's 10th Anniversary, Negative Player Reception, And Where We Go From Here

Exactly, the way they implemented it and the reason they gave for it is so obviously a blatant lie that I do not understand why anyone would defend this insane change. I can understand that less casual players do not feel the change in requirements because it fits easily in their existing weekly playtime schedule (heck, it does not even really affect my own schedule by the way), but everyone has to agree that it is a net devalue of playtime vs XP ratio. Accepting this quest update silently just means widening the door for more similar future detrimental adjustments.

Nobody is trying to convince any other HS player to leave the game, but we have to speak up and let Blizzard know this is a bad decision and implementation.

@anchorm4n I know I was a bit... aggressive? in my previous reply, but I don't think we have to stop being friendly towards each other 🙂

This subject has brought out a lot of passion from all camps, for real lol.

  • Hearthstone's 10th Anniversary, Negative Player Reception, And Where We Go From Here

And they would've gotten away with it too if only they'd implemented this change the following way:

    - Keep weekly quests exactly as they were.
    - Turn them into quest chains, where the new extra requirements (win x additional ranked games) and the 28% bonus XP were relegated to a second quest you unlocked after completing the first.

That way, it really would've felt like a bonus you could work for, but still keep the option to settle for the amount of time investment you're used to.

  • Hearthstone's 10th Anniversary, Negative Player Reception, And Where We Go From Here

noone is forcing you to stop playing or uninstalling.

If you will keep buying from hearthstone after you saw all of the statements on the thread, it is still your decision but know that it will get worse in every move if you keep supporting their acts with your payments and keep that in mind it doesn't affect only you but everyone.

It will end only one way tho, people who knows and sees how these work call you stupid and selfish and The cost you are paying for will be more in time even though you don't care.

  • Hearthstone's 10th Anniversary, Negative Player Reception, And Where We Go From Here

I fully symphatize with your decision to let go of hearthstone because if I have to be perfectly honest the game has gone stale for quite some time now, and it always seem to me like its hanging on the edges of being let go. All that was needed was a slight nudge, and blizzard duly provided it when they raised the quest requirements for weeklies.

For my own part, Im staying for now. I play enough hearthstone that the increases in quest requirements dont really affect me, and if Im feeling particularly unmotivated to play hearthstone I'll play a few busted decks in wild (being in bronze rank, getting wins there is very nearly automatic) just to get the quests done quickly.

Just a small comment, I find it a bit surprising is how much stick that 'play 32 miniature cards' is getting when in reality playing 75 battlecry cards and 750 mana is far more time consuming than even the 'win 10 games' could ever muster.

But I do worry for hearthstone's future. Its not likely to get any better; the game is not really evolving so much as it is just repeating itself but at a higher power level. The game is getting progressively more expensive to have fun in, and hearthstone being what it is, its fairly time consuming even for aggro players.

In my opinion, hearthstone may need a reset button. Either retiring cards, scaling back the power level substantially, or simply just making hearthstone 2. All of those require great amounts of planning and manpower, and Im not optimitic that it'll ever happen. More likely hearthstone succumbs to a slow death, Im not exactly sure whether I'll be happy to be released or sad that one of my hobbies just go bust.

  • Hearthstone's 10th Anniversary, Negative Player Reception, And Where We Go From Here

Shame, I'm sorry to see someone leave but I do believe in the "put your money where your mouth is" thing. So you do you! Me I guess I'm a little different.

Corridor Sleeper being in the pre-order never bothered me. It was only early access for a week (month?). As long as they keep the free legendary at announcement it changes up the meta and gives people something new to mess with until release.

Harth Stonebrew I never realized his golden version was tied to a bundle. Strange but again I have the card I don't car about cosmetics so much.

Diamon Cards as I said I don't care about cosmetics, however, wtf! Why are these $40+? When I look at cosmetics like that I go, nope and just never check the shop again. At least in snap I can hoard gold and buy or two that I enjoy. and if there is one I REALLY want I can spend a couple bucks to get it. Diamonds in HS are just crazy priced. I can't believe anyone is buying them, but then again they must be to keep that price. That's sad. I want games to make money so they can make more content. I'm all for pre-orders and bundles and battle passes. Heck I play Smite as well, another game with a lot of Skins. But I'm not buying anything else but a skin every few months, if that. (you can't judge me for buying the TNMT skins!). I look at that and it cost me about 1 Diamond card to get 5ish skins I think  it was (it's been a while). Hell in Hearthstone I bought the 3kingdoms bundle, 4 hero skins, for less than 1 diamond card. I am sure diamonds are more expensive to make but 4 to 1 seems obsurd. Anyway moving on...

Duels never really got into it. Though removing modes is not a good sign. Even if I didn't play/enjoy it I can't frame this in any positive light.

Weeklies I saw something about them changing. I really didn't notice a difference. I usually blast these out in a day or 2 either way.

Players, as you can see i don't fit in with the other players often. I play a lot of games were players do nothing but bash it so I've always been less impacted by player sentiment. Blizzard over all has had a lot of game issues and monitization problems recently. Diablo Immortal being the biggest heap on that pile. It wasn't even a bad game, at least what I played, but that monitization was monsterous. I play a lot of games with cash shops and I've never been that off put by one EVER. Horse armor was better than that crap. It does feel like Hearthstone is heading that way with just Diamond cards alone. However I've seen some positive changes in D4 and Wow Discovery has been doing some fun stuff with the IP.

Maybe my rose colored glasses keep me from seeing Blizzard as the monster it's become. Maybe I'm so used to these preditory cash shops that $40 a skin isn't so insane. Maybe i'm just so desperate for a card game I can play with friends and family from home that I stick around. I don't know. As a former MTG player seeing $70 decks for Fallout or LotR was a shock. Is this really our path?

For those of you that take your wallets and run, I respect that. Truly I do. If this path ever changes it is you dear fallen that I will be greatful. For now though I'll just be shaking my head and trying to enjoy what time I have left in this world gaming. This is my one joy and I am not ready to put it behind me yet.

Edit: Just adding I am MOSTLY F2P in hearthstone and have been since the start. I've bought a few Battlepasses for expansion themes I was really into and I did get the 3Kingdoms skins as I said (damn you Dynasty warriors!!). Otherwise I'ver never pre-orderd or otherwise spent money. 10 years I'd estimate it's about $5-10 per year if I spread it out over my time since Beta.  Just last year I crafted my final card for Classic to get my Diamon Rag! Have no other sets even near completion but never felt I was short of cards or dust to play most of what I wanted each set.

  • Hearthstone's 10th Anniversary, Negative Player Reception, And Where We Go From Here

linkblade has helped me realize that I've made a pretty selfish argument here. While Blizzard hasn't fucked up hard enough to drive me away from Hearthstone for myself, I need to reconsider if they have fucked up other people's experience enough to make me draw consequences out of sympathy.

  • Blizzard's Known Issues for Hearthstone's 29.2 Patch

I'm sorry that I've irritated you linkblade - that feeling of fondness is mutual <3

It wasn't my intention to overlook Blizzard's bad behaviour at all, I just haven't reached the point that most of you seem to be standing at yet. There's a middle ground between outright boycott and buying every offer in the store, where I'm trying to support my favorite hobby with real money purchases but still gang up with other players and criticize the companies wrongdoings on social media to induce change. That sounds kinda pathetic now that I type it out, but afaik there's little else I can do and it seems to have an impact after all.

This is frustrating. I agree with your criticism and I have empathy with your anger. I still don't want to give up playing and supporting Hearthstone.

Is this really a black and white situation? Has Blizzard fucked up so bad that you can't stay online friends with someone who still buys their Hearthstone products? Maybe I have to take another look at the whole situation again. I'm sorry. :(

I remember traveling to the Ashlands when the game first came out to see in development content. There was not much to be seen, much like the Mistlands at the time, but daaamn they have really leveled it up.

It looks like its in public testing now so full release soon!

  • Blizzard's Known Issues for Hearthstone's 29.2 Patch

@anchorm4n "If everybody went F2P the game would be dead."

This might be one of the more radical things I say, but if enough people felt slighted such that they stopped investing into their fun-time with Hearthstone, to such an extent that it actually threatened Blizzard's bottom line and they subsequently pulled the plug on the game, then perhaps it was time for Hearthstone to go. I've always liked you from our time interacting via custom cards and the like, but I genuinely hate when people say that line. It might not be your general intention, but the sentence implies that you're willing to overlook the impact they've had on other paying customers so long as the game continues to exist for you to play. And that's not okay :/

If everybody did go F2P - because they felt they could no longer support the game monetarily - the game would be dead, and that fate would frankly be deserved.
