Im actually curious as to how a mage deck with practically no spells manages to beat the quest decks. Seems to me the only thing its beating is aggro decks and maybe secret pally, because if mage is forced to play something like Cornelius Roame in this meta, that cant be a good sign.
In my head, there might be a fire spell themed mage with Wildfire as a 1 mana hp upgrade. Might get on experimenting tomorrow.
I generally dislike posting on this thread, but i really have to let off some steam. I played 10 ladder games in a row, ALL of them against Sorcerer's Gambit mage. Tried to play around them, because i know that Sorcerer's Gambit mage often run 2 copies of Ice Barrier, and Brain Freeze. But apparantly ALL of them also included 1 copy of Oasis Ally. I didn't play minions and didn't SMOrc face because i wanted to stall and Mutanus the Devourer their quest reward. Guess what? ALL of them played Primordial Studies into Brain Freeze and played their questline reward before i could Mutanus the Devourer it. Every. Single. Game.
Against that... unfun deck i try to play around the frost spells and delay their questline as long as possible, but i guess it was BOLD of me to ASSUME that any of my plays even mattered against a solitaire deck. What a lot of fun, i wish i was playing against The Demon Seed warlock in WILD instead. Actually i bet playing against ress/big priest is a ton of fun compared to this.
Btw when i decided to play a deck that actually counters Sorcerer's Gambit mage, guess what. Never found one again. And the second i go back to a deck thats weak to it, guess what. Another 5 Sorcerer's Gambit mages IN A ROW. :(
Can Blizzard just drop the new patch already so I don't have to look at that fucking leapfrogger animation for 30 minutes every game because every tryhard and their mother forces this stupidly broken build?
So in case anybody cares, I built a Hero Power Mage deck yesterday to kind of get a feel what it's weaknesses currently are and how the buffs would make a difference, and I have to say it's actually not looking too bad.
One of the biggest weaknesses of the deck currently is how awkward it is to get Wildfire online due to its cost. There weree many instances where I either had Wildfire in the mulligan with nothing to do on ^1-mana , or be in a situation where I needed to Wildfire, but was 1-mana off.
Also, MOrdresh at 8 will be huge. There were several instances where I was at 8-mana and being able to play MOrdresh would have either won me the game or allowed me to stabilize. Not to mention that getting Wildfire earlier makes him haring him so much easier.
Sidenote: Cornelius Roame is actually pretty good in this deck because you really need the draw. Also Spicebread Baker works a lot better than expected and gets rid of the need to rely on Cultist for heal.
Honestly, the biggest thing holding Hero POwer Mage back as of now is the fact that you're kinda forced into a no-spell deck so you can tutor with Starscryer. If they printed some form of Tutor (either one that draws a Fire Spell or one that draws a 1-cost Spell) that allowed you to include other spell the deck could really pop off since the Hero Power package is only 5 cards total.
I played Pirate Warrior about a week ago in Wild and it worked pretty fine. So my first thought was "Oh well, this changes make PW in Wild very, very strong!".
But yesterday I played PW in Wild again and it felt very "meh". It was an auto loose against Quest Hunter. Quest Warlock felt like an impossible enemy too. And there were other decks too, which felt "very good" against PW.
So how good will be PW without Demon Seed? Very good, I think - but it will not be the new "S-Tier deck" which totally defines the meta, because there will be decks, which are strong against it (even without tech against pirates).
I am only a little bit afraid the new meta will look like this:
1. Quest Hunter > Aggro Decks
2. decks which are stacking armor > Quest Hunter
3. Aggro Decks > decks which are stacking armor (?)
Ouch. This patch looks excessively unkind to poor Valeera. First she's the only one to not get a Halloween skin, and now this. They better at least have plans to release her merc. as part of some special event.
Yeah it's a pity, just yesterday I tried Quest Priest, and although I would have probably won anyway, Illucia sealed the win right away. I wonder how poor Quest Priest will turn out with this nerfed, because nothing seems to be buffed.
Ofcourse this had to happen, mostly because of Shadow Priest.
I tend to agree with you, but once you grasp the bigger concepts it becomes way more fun and easier - even though I dropped the game, I played it for a couple months back in the day.
Its a bit like ungoro quest rogue. Its not that its win rate is big, its just that its play rate is high, it basically destroys tempo decks, and like quest rogue its very consistent at what it does. Unlike quest rogue, this one can only be beaten by either bad luck, burn or combo that's faster than itself, like celestial druid, contact rogue, or face hunter.
I just personally dont like that deck. Against aggro decks there's some semblance of hope, playing around their strats. With quest mage, you don't play around anything, just go face and pray that they cant kill you before you kill them.
Well, I am basically a frog, so reading is extremely hard for me. Most of the times, I go by guesses and just look at the pictures, hoping that no one will notice.
Jokes aside, my bad: I was so confident about Illucia's rework that when I read the word 'copy' I though "heh, nailed it" and didn't bother to double check. Thanks for pointing it out: it has now been fixed!
What if... The Demon Seed, instead of having you take X amount of self-damage to progress, would instead track turns in which you dealt damage to yourself? This would affect Wild the most, since the critical mass of self-damage cards is there, and the change would slow it down massively while making it somewhat still solid in Standard - maybe stronger in Standard than in Wild, but it would balance out both worlds without implementing the ban to the Quest in Wild.
I'm not sure where I stand on hand disruption: it feels terrible when it's done to you, but at the same time it also feels terrible when you figured out your opponent's game plan and you're unable to do anything about it. I'm thinking of decks like Mozaki Mage in Wild.
By creating the original Illucia and also other cards like Mutanus the Devourer, Team 5 made the decision to have hand disruption as part of the game. The only thing that sets Illucia apart is that her effect isn't random, but I don't think it's a good rule to have high-impact plays always depend on a random roll.
It was indeed a card that can lose you the match when played at the wrong time: I remember watching a tournament where a player forgot about the automatically generated Deathwing in their hand that they swapped over to their opponent.
There would still be a risk in including a card in your deck that can sit in your hand for a long time. Priest doesn't have the card draw it used to and while it still has card generation, it's less than it used to be.
In any case, at 3 mana I don't think she's playable and I'm not sure the new version would be playable at 2 mana either. The cards your opponent hasn't played yet are likely either too expensive to play on curve so far or situational. In the swap version, getting rid of situational cards when they do nothing at the time could help you in the rest of the match, but in the copy version there is no gain from a situational card unless it's good right then and there. Evocation hasn't seen a lot of play at 2 mana and I think in most cases it would give you better options than your opponent's hand.
I'm still betting on late October. They do updates every 2 weeks now, right? And the update with Mercenaries isn't really a major update to traditional Hearthstone, so you might reasonably expect the October 26 update to be the next major (traditional) Hearthstone update after that.
The end of the Wailing Caverns offer makes me think it could even be sooner.
The change to Illucia was necessary but the card is just plain bad now. An increase in stats or reduction in cost would have been fine imo. The value she provides is too inconsistent and unreliable. It is totally dependent on what the opponent has and there are still scenarios where she isn't playable at all (against aggro decks or if the opponent is simply out of cards). If i want a late game value engine for my deck, i'd rather play Ysera the Dreamer. It costs three times more but comes with a sizable body and the value provided is consistent. I'll always know what i'm getting. So, Illucia simply isn't worth a deck slot anymore. She lost her role as combo disruptor and it is completely outclassed as a value generator. I won't miss the opportunity of getting 1600 dust this time.
The one detail here is that you can earn xp from playing mercs, so I guess this is where every programmer will start sticking their bots in for farming. Because its infinitely easier to bot a pve than a pvp, not that I havent seen some really impressive bots in bronze wild.
For all us ordinary folk, here's an area you can earn xp for when hearthstone hearthstone starts to suck.
The question now is how much xp exactly. I think playing on solo adventure also grants xp, but the amount being so small as to be insignificant.

Wild is not Wild anymore.
They're killing the only format I play.
They're killing my favorite class (remember the Mecha'thun Warlock killed by nerfing Bloodbloom? I had the deck fully golden)
So now I have the quest warlock deck full-golden too, and they're killing it again.
I suppose, I will drop this game soon...

im just gonna say i would kill to live in a world where questline mage is unbeatable without burn

Thanks for the info.
I will also add, for those who are curious, that the xp gains are as follows;
- Ranked will net 400xp per hour
- Other modes will be 300xp per hour
So the pve, according to Dean's twitter is 300xp per hour of play. At least that's the plan anyway.

It was not about stealing quest rewards.
It was about dropping Illucia with an empty hand effectively negating your opponent's next turn entirely.

Wildfire to 1 = low key buff to Wandmaker in HP Mage!
I don't think Wandmaker can give you the questline, so Wildfire will now be 1/8 chance to generate from Wandmaker
Other options are Brain Freeze, Devolving Missiles, First Flame, Font of Power, Primordial Studies, Shooting Star, and Snap Freeze.
