  • About the pre constructed decks...

Am I the only one who dislikes that T5 released these so early into the meta and has not bothered to update them, despite the fact most of them have been nerfed and do not see any competitive play? How many of them could you realistically keep a positive wr with anyways? It just seems kind of dishonest that these are being described as meta when only the paladin, priest, and warrior decks are.

Thanks, I hope you'll like the 2nd part as much as this!

I was thinking about whether or not to include the Commander only cards, but then I would've had only one green card. There's barely any art of that color. Unlucky coincidence I guess.

I do, and you're right... sadly. It's strange that a game so popular has existed for so long without some features that other games consider basic necessities - friendly challenge lobbies, the ever-elusive 'tournament mode', guild systems, profiles, stats, stackable collection searches, etc. New content is king, but surely they know that introducing some of those features would revolutionize how players stream and share Hearthstone to viewers and friends.

Your final phrase touches on something I'm curious about, as well. When they say that players enjoy certain content, is there more to that than '20% of our playerbase completed this single-player adventure'? If that's all, it incentivizes them to look positively on completionist coercion - i.e. you locked an achievement behind this mode and I feel obligated to do it - which is part of why some of these updates cause me to feel exhausted.

Wonderful art and article! One sad thing for us Arena players is that we won't get to play with Swiftfoot Boots, since that is Commander-only I think. And actually Song of Inspiration as well.

Edit: Forgot to mention Song of Inspiration

    1) There is a huge difference between BMing in online games and BMing in real life. I'm actually the nicest person you'd ever meet who is even soft and practical when other ppl are out of control.

    2) However on games it's a different story. I love playing the part of the irate gamer and though it's not that I am hoping to make anybody upset, I couldnt care any amount less that they do. You should see me on League...

    3) It's a game. Grow a thicker skin. Take it as an opportunity to challenge yourself not to be offended so easily and, hey, maybe even improve your sense of humor.

    4) Don't you guys see how sad it is getting offended by someone you will never know? Think about it for once. The problem is with you not the BMers.

(I added numbers to each sentence to make it easy to address each individually.)

    1) I'm glad to hear you are nice irl, but that's no consolation to anyone who has to encounter your online persona. I also challenge you to explain what the "huge difference" is between BMing online and irl? You've got to justify that if you want to convince anyone of it.

    2) I'm curious about why you wouldn't care about making someone upset (or more likely annoyed) online? Is it just an 'ignorance is bliss' scenario where you don't actually know if any given player is annoyed, so you can treat it like no one is? Should that matter?

    3) Oh don't worry, my skin is thick enough and I don't get upset or offended by it myself. However, I will say that everyone plays games because they want to have fun. In a game with a competition element, such as Hearthstone, you go in knowing you might lose and maybe even get salty about that. Fine. You sign up for that when you click 'Play'. What you don't sign up for is some idiot on the other side doing their best to annoy you by spamming emotes or roping. That's an abuse of the tools HS has, not part of the game we're actually there to play.

    4) I'm not really sure offending people is the problem here since emotes are designed in a way that means nothing personal is said. BMing can annoy people, but that's not the same as being offended.

As for the victim shaming in "The problem is with you not the BMers", I hope you realise the logic behind that is the same as saying it is the fault of the child being bullied when they get picked on at school. It's not illegal for people to be bullies, right? So surely everyone should just put up with it? Or maybe, just maybe, it is actually the bully's fault when they play out their pathetic little power fantasy and knowingly make someone else upset.

BMing in Hearthstone is much more tame than playground bullying, and I don't normally bother making comments about it because of that, but that doesn't mean it isn't fundamentally the same thing. They are both one person deriving fun from the negative emotions of someone else, even if they are only in your imagination.

In the end, your emote spamming may only be a minor inconvenience for the opponent, but that is still an inconvenience you have knowingly set upon them. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it is selfish.

If I had known that Take Possession would be a finalist and my card would not, I would have made a bigger stink and got anchorm4n to make a new card lol jk :P

I haven’t read all the comments here, but the ones I have aren’t people complaining the BMers offend them.  But rather pointing out the immaturity of it.

You say you aren’t doing it to tilt people, but… why else do it?  You say you are the nicest person, but the anonymity of the Internet has a way to bring out people’s true selves.  In other words: If doing annoying things to get under random people’s skin is fun for you playing a game then you aren’t nice deep down.  Rather you’re actually a jerk in real life, but also too much of a coward to be a jerk to someone’s face because doing that as opposed to over the Internet might have consequences.

But if that’s who you are and what you enjoy doing, that’s cool.  You be you!  But everyone’s sense of fun and what they enjoy is different.  People will see this topic different depending on that very perspective.  And it’s my opinion that people who BM because it’s fun are no more better than school yard bullies who are unfulfilled in their lives, requiring them to put others down and be irritating to make themselves feel better.

Lastly, please don’t confuse mental maturity and security in one’s self with being soft and easily offended.  Some of us just don’t feel the need to belittle strangers to feel good or have fun.  In this situation it may very well be you that needs to re-evaluate your own position and better yourself.

the right passives/matchups have a lot to do with how the run will go.

Isn't this the sad truth about duels.

Its fun when you get the passives and treasures that synergizes with your hp, or is just flat out broken. The reality of duels is that the higher you go the more disgusting combos you see and that really tears at the fun more than you think. Best part of the game is probably earlier on, when you get to experience what seems like a restricted wild constructed format. By the time you get your second passive it'll be fairly clear whether youre getting to 12 or not.

Thumbs up on revisiting Razorpetals and making them meaningful. Razorpetal Lasher was an OK card, but Blizz wasted the opportunity to make razorpetals an archetype-defining mechanic back in Un'Goro.

Gotcha! Makes sense. I might reinstall and try your list plus N'Zoth--I've always run him primarily to get an extra Lightshower Elemental (kinda like DH uses him mainly to get a third Illidari Inquisitor), which can be really big sometimes, but he definitely does end up dead in your hand other times. Thanks for the list and the explanation!

Just to let you know, I've actually included N'zoth now because I realised that the 2nd Dungeoneer is way too clunky most of the time and N'zoth adds a valuable last ditch effort to hold off tempo decks in the lategame.

There might also be an argument to replace the other Dungeoneer with a single Apotheosis since that extra bit of healing can come in clutch, although I'm not sure if it doesn't end up being a dead draw in a lot of situations.

How can you even beat such an aggressively condescending line. It is reserved for only the scummiest of topdeckers who you still end up beating after they've RNGd their way out of sticky situations multiple times a game.

Thank you. I appreciated the detail and the links :) I did assume that the last Duels ratings reset was considered a new season, so I’m glad to know that something bigger is coming.

I barely play Duels now, but I think it’s 90% of the way to being a great system, so I really hope they keep working on it.

    Quote From Nevin

We had a season reset around the release of Barrens, but we still stuck with the Scholomance theme. I don’t expect to see it change anytime soon. We’ve heard explanations that they don’t have time to make new Brawls because of the focus on Mercenaries, and I’m sure that retheming a mode is more work than making one new Brawl.

To put it another way, I think a game mode has to be a runaway success like Battlegrounds or Constructed in order to justify ongoing attention. Duels is only worth it to Blizzard if they can leave it there without doing more work. I’m pretty sure I saw a quote along those lines for Meecenaries: They want to be sure Mercenaries can be played into the future without needing maintenance.

There was no "season reset" with the barrens release, only a nameless content update. You are probably confusing it with the rating reset in January, which also came with the mid-season update. The mode has been in Season 1 since it released !

They also confirmed that they are working on new duels heroes. I also see no reason why they shouldn't support the mode anymore since it still has a respectable playerbase, even if it isn't as popular as standard or BG. Duels updates are also still on the updated roadmap. The "Live Content" team, which is responsible for Duels, Arena, Singleplayer content and Brawls, is also not responsible for the mercenaries mode anymore since that has its own team now.

Speaking of Mercenaries, that will definetely see ongoing support post launch. Unlike Duels, which was always meant as a secondary mode like Arena and Tavern Brawls, Mercenaries, which has been in the works for over one and a half years,  is supposed to be the third main one with constructed and BG. The Survey also mentioned monthly new mercenaries and I'm sure that we can expect bigger "Expansion" updates for the mode, again, just like constructed and BG.

I know that it's arrogant to do that, but I havn't linked so many sources before so...

    -Well played

So we can assume, that new Duels season comes along with the start of next Stormwind expansion :P

I wonder if that means that we get new "Theme" with it? We have "Wizards" since the start, maybe it's time to change it, Blizzard?

Season one came with "Wizzard Duels" because it launched during the Scholomance expansion, so it's save to assume that Season two will be called something like "Mercenary Duels".

There is also a chance that it will be launching with the patch instead of the expansion, because they don't like too release content that distract each other. That's also the reason why they released the classic mode one week before, instead of with the barrens expansion.

The devs keep talking about how fun and well received all their side projects have been - the Mercenaries single-player content, the Rewards Track achievements. I don't really get it. All those are to me is stress - a thousand small things to do for small rewards.

Keep in mind that you are part of the <1% of players who actually voice their opinions in public forums. Their data surely show that the average player enjoys, or atleast use those things.
