  • Hearthstone Duels is Being Removed From the Client in April 2024

Is there a reason to hope this will be replaced for a new mode of some sort? They've cut Mercs, Duels and Twist seems too quiet for what they had planned (I know that the team was supposed to be moved to other games).

I don't really know how I feel about Duels, never really liked the format. I suck at arena, but at least the draft makes me feel like I have some sort of randomnes

Furious about this announcement.  Dungeon runs were one of the best creations (in my eyes) for this game.  Being able to do that in a PvP mode in Duels has been the one thing that's kept me consistently going expansion after expansion.  Been playing since the Beta and Duels is the one thing that keeps me engaged and interested in progressively interesting matches once I grow tired of Standard.

The web events? I think they said on discord that they weren't satisfied with their quality, which I can definetely see. They were extremely easy to miss, clunky to navigate ingame and generally uninteresting if it wasn't for the few rewards they gave out.

Oh yeah, I could definitively say and almost be willing to commit to shoe eating if it does happen, that solo adventures are gone for good.

Blizzard always talked about how much work they took and how they have no replay value. Dungeon Run was a solution to that, and Duels was a way to improve upon Dungeon Run. RIP

Which is a damn shame. World of Warcraft has had a similar problem where every expansion the old expansion's stuff is all completely irrelevant which leads to the time in development being too high for the use of it all. With Dragonflight they changed that mantra and instead are creating systems that will be used for years to come which has put so much good into the game.

I think Hearthstone should revisit what a solo adventure is. Why do we need them to be completely voice acted? Why do we need special effects for key moments with a lore character? I can say without a doubt that players would be happy, maybe not all, and probably not Zeddy (<3), with just getting some new AI to play against that featured other characters. Then if you do want to put in the effort of voicelines and animations, sell the damn heroes as playable heroes! Hero Skins must still sell well for there to be so many options, so double up and use solo adventures as a way to showcase cool new hero skins (alongside fun ai to fight). We don't need an adventure to progress some unique Hearthstone story. Go take World of Warcraft's Zul'Aman and create a deck for each of the bosses - you probably already have rights to use the existing art for them. Done.

It might never happen, but I say bring back Solo Adventures!

That's awesome! Have you had any unfortunate deaths yet?

That they stopped supporting the mode is nothing new sadly, however I'm shocked that they are outright removing it. It made sense for classic, since the population of that mode was a lot lower and because they reused the assets/UI for twist, but for Duels? My best guess is that they want to combat the splitting playerbases by combining Arena (which is getting more attention lately) and Duels. Though I was never a Arena guy, so I guess my Tavern Tickets that I used for heroic duels runs are going to gather dust again.

I mean, even Mercenaries (as much as I love this mode) is still in the client. Are they going to keep it because of pve and are going to disable pvp there too in the future?

Though the timing is somewhat interesting. The April patch they are describing is surely going to be the one that starts of the next HS Year with the next Expansion. They also did hint at Hearthstones 10. Anniversary during Blizzcon and a upcoming steam release is already confirmed per datamined strings and graphics. I wonder if they are going to market it as some kind of soft re-launch with a more defined gameplay (Traditional, Battlegrounds, Arena). No more "Hearthstone is a platform for card games" I guess.

What's going to happen with the live service team btw? As far as I remember they are responsible for Tavern Brawls, Solo Adventures, Arena and Duels. Are they solely focusing on Arena now, is there something new coming up ("and more") or were the 10 people they lost in the recent internal restructering the entire/most of the live service team? I have so many questions right now that are hopefully getting answered with the announcement of the next Hearthstone year.

This is an awesome way to end the epic games holiday giveaway. I never got an opportunity to play Guardians of the Galaxy but I know a lot of folks really enjoyed it so it's now been added to the backlog!

It would be a huge loss to the community to have a positive force like Regis being completely gone from the game.

I hope Blizzard can figure something out. Dungeon Run PvP was a very cool mode and I genuinely had fun playing with it over the years. If they did something with it as a Twist format for a month (special heroes + hero powers), or if they do experiment more with Arena, I think that's time well spent and it consolidates the player base more which means better queues across the field.

What happened to Hearthstone being this platform for so many different ways to play with the game? The loss of Classic was tragic, though they should have accelerated the timeline of era releases instead of never touching it. Classic makes a good Tavern Brawl though, and works way better as a "this shows up as a 1 week thing" occasionally instead of being permanently available. Mercenaries was another huge loss, the mode had a lot of potential but failed to deliver in so many ways. Mercenaries would be removed from the client too if it wasn't for the simple fact they actually sold players content for the mode.

I wonder if Duels never received content for sale because they too weren't sure about the long-term viability of the mode. It's been quite some time since Blizzard has pushed a relevant update to it, so it's not like the writing hasn't been on the wall for a while now.

We used to get some great viewership on Duels content. The mode was clearly doing well at different points, but maybe it just wasn't doing good enough for Activision.

    RIP

Did they ever say why they stopped doing "events" like Venom vs Carnage or the Hero song? The kind where we all participated to earn avatars or variants themed around the event. I liked those - who doesn't want to play for free rewards? - and it encouraged me to keep playing, but they just kinda disappeared seemingly not long after the game released.

    Free stuff isn't profitable, I guess :(

  • Hearthstone Duels is Being Removed From the Client in April 2024

One of the few things keeping RegisKillbin connected to Hearthstone was his enjoyment of Duels; will this cause him to leave completely? He rarely has content for it beyond new-card reviews and the opening week...mostly been doing Marvel Snap stuff. I really enjoy watching him, even if I don't play Snap anymore, but we'll be one step further apart if he no longer plays Hearthstone *shrugs*

  • Star Wars Outlaws Releasing Late 2024

I have not played any Star Wars game since Jedi Academy :D But I would be lying if I didnt say this looks extremely promising. Looks like Everspace 2 and Mass Effect: Andromeda had a child. Hell yeah! Im hoping this game will be everything Starfield wanted to be, to push this genre in a good direction.

  • What Are You Playing? January 2024

I'm playing Pokemon Shield Nuzlocke style. I've also recently bought ANNO: Mutationem and am excited to try it out. I normally don't like pixel art games, but this one really piqued my interest. Not sure if I want to finish Pokemon first or if I'll play concurrently.

And I also play Hearthstone, duh.
