I finally opened my copy of the Year of the Mammoth book over the weekend and yeah, the books really are amazing. There's some sweet concept art I had never seen for the set logos and the Knights of the Frozen throne logo, in particular, felt like "what were they even considering with this one". So great to see that development insight.
Also, Frost Lich Jaina in all her glory is an excellent sight to the eyes!
Oh and my favourite part about the art books as someone who has been using some of this art for content creation over the past 7 years is that I can think about almost every time and way I've used each of the pieces for banners, headers, news article images, and more.
Just a couple of months for Year of the Raven which is gonna be awesome!
As with so much of Hearthstone, the root of the problem is Blizzard's initial decision to pretend the game is free to play. Yes, the word "free" will get you all kinds of attention, but all of that turns sour the moment people realize all of the good stuff is firmly locked behind a paywall.
And then there's the whole dust scam. Letting people dust non-duplicate cards -- literally cannibalizing their own collections for a mere pittance when new cards are already very expensive to buy -- has been the greatest evil genius plan in video game history. Step one: convince people to pay $3 for 10 random cards. Step two: Allow players to literally destroy what they just bought if it wasn't exactly what they were looking for. Yes, "destroy," because the dust you get back does not even come close to making up for what you already spent.
I've been saying from the beginning that it's foolish to dust anything but duplicates, but free players are so desperate to create even one good deck that no one ever listened. I get that they are just doing what they have to do to be competitive in the game, but it all goes back to my original point: Hearthstone was never intended to be kind to free players. Like all free-to-play games, the goal is to make people want what they don't have and then convert from free player to paying customers. If you never pay, you get punished over and over.
This will never end until Hearthstone drops the f2p pretense and starts charging a fair price -- to everyone.
I've tried duels a few times. Usually I just get 2 wins, 3 if I'm lucky. I try to look online for starter decks because any deck I would make from scratch would invariably be terrible, but there's never any deck I have all the cards for, and I usually have no clue what would be viable replacements. If there are any.
Thanks Link :) And yeah, most of this story is from that campaign. Rexxar's popped up on WoW a few times, not seldom as a main character who does much.
Oh goodie goodie. I love these things so much. Excited for when the Raven comes out, as I already have the first three. Like you say, it's great to be able to just flip through casual looks at the wonderful art in the game unclipped and not on a screen sometimes. There's lots of amazing behind the scenes design information in them as well.
I've mostly been fiddling with a minion-free Druid deck. It's fun at least. Not sure how good it is, but it feels like it should be at least competetive. I'm still tweaking it. I've seen builds with Blessing of the ancients, but that's spent too much time clogging up my hand when I need to be producing a constant stream of threats until I can Savage Roar.
I'm actually surprised no one has posted anything about the playing dragon maly druid with Resizing Pouch to get more Moonfires or Lightning Blooms. Fairly difficult to pilot, but that's more or less because its a largely aggro meta right now.
The new Druid cards are really cool, they have revitalised a bunch of already existing archetypes which we haven't seen in quite some times. Besides the three linked above, Feno has had a lot of success with his Spell-based token druid, and I love my own Embiggen Druid:
A few years ago, during World of Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion, the titular raid boss got defeated for the first time by a guild which employed a certain unintended interaction. The boss broke the edges off his platform, making positioning-based mechanics more difficult. This guild discovered that using a specific bomb-type item would bring these edges back, making the boss a lot easier. Blizzard, who was very unhappy with this, banned them for exploiting. The guild defended itself citing it was "clever use of game mechanics".
The reason I bring this up, is because you could make the same arguments for the firewall skip. Clearly, this was not intended by the developers and you need to actively turn the firewall on and off for the cheat, which point towards it being an exploit. On the other hand, they did code it this way, and certain strategies go from practically unplayable to very strong by using this method, which might point to it being clever use of game mechanics. Personally, I think it's exploiting, but I can't blame people for using it. At very high MMRs you put yourself at a serious disadvantage if you don't use it, and in a competitive game-mode I understand people doing anything legal to win. And since Blizzard does not take any measures against it, you'd be a fool not to utilise it.
This paywall has killed Duels mere weeks after its release, and I don't see it being brought back to life even if they are removed. I had tons of fun with it in early access, but when it got officially released and I couldn't play with any of the new treasures because they required 20 Scholomance Epics, I dropped it like a hot potato. I bought the freaking 80 euro pre-order for Scholomance, and I couldn't even use them. This, combined with the aborrent balancing, drove tons of people away. These new treasures will do the same thing to plenty of people who were still left.
It's really sad, because it's actually a really fun mode with great potential. Shame Blizzard had to ruin it through utter lack of balancing and the worst paywall I've ever seen in HS.
I wouldnt call it cheating, since the bad coding allows it,
this bit though, and I've seen a few people say that it's fine as it's coded this way
I'm pretty sure this should be considered an exploit, as in if something is considered an unintended behaviour, and you find it, you're supposed to report it and stop using it, otherwise you might get banned, that's how it usually is written in ToS and that's what happened to people in other blizz games

As an avid collector of the WoW TCG cards, this article was very enlightening, especially the Nadina easter egg.

isn't it cheating, when big streamers always disconnect on purpose in bgs?
