Over the weekend the TwinSunz Podcast aired a 2-hour interview with Legends of Runeterra Game Director, Andrew Yip. He covered a variety of topics, including laying the groundwork for multiplayer modes, upcoming card cosmetics, and brand new Champions unique to LoR.
Quote From Reddit (Breakdown from TfTEberron)
- The majority of the playerbase is on mobile.
- Discard Decks need some help to be fully realized.
- The dev team expects players to crack any meta deck and find a weakness. If the players fail to after considerable time, they said 40 hours of trying to crack it, then balance changes will be introduced.
- BALANCE CHANGES IN 1.5, breaking the cycle.
- The development team doesn't want to do neutral cards because they are either staples in every deck or absolutely useless.
- Alternate game modes will be used to make unpopular or underused cards still be viable.
- We will one day see champions original to Legends of Runeterra.
- The goal is for every format to be sustained and reused, even in limited windows.
- L.A.B.S. will show the flexibility of the core gameplay engine.
- Some events will span multiple games (LoR, LoL, TFT, Wild Rift, etc.).
- Expect card cosmetics in the future (remained vague on all details).
- Multiplayer game modes are being considered as the next horizon (2v2, 2vBoss, other social modes). Want to set up a competitive foundation, then set up a co-operative foundation.
- Fast card release to satisfy players while the foundation of game modes is established.
- "Gauntlets are the beginning of the flood" -Yipp. July and August will be busy.
- Use RNG for skill testing, not for randomness.
- Yipp is excited to develop Void champions into cards.

Does this mean that balance patch will be on 1.7, 1.9 and so on? Or maybe it's the changed day from Tues to Thurs?
I'm pretty sure that what they mean is that 1.5 will have changes but 1.6, 1.8, etc will all also have card changes. 1.6 will probably have fewer changes to compensate for all the changes in 1.5. The reason they are doing balance changes in 1.5 is that they decided that the meta has too many issues to go on like this for 2 more weeks.
Really excited for what they have in store
Is he Yip as in the news or Yipp as the last line of Reddit quote ? :)
Professor von Yipp is one of the most fun cards in the game !
The developer is Andrew Yip, his name is just misspelled on the original Reddit thread.
Wow, this are very good news, and pretty surprised that the majority of players are in mobile devices.
This game has so much potential to overpass their competitors.
I like that there are no neutral cards in LoR, for precisely that reason. Makes the deckbuilding stand out more from HS.
"We will one day see champions original to Legends of Runeterra"
I was wondering whether they were planning to do this, because with their planned pace of introducing new cards they are going to eventually run out of champions they can use from League of Legends (even though there are a lot of them). I like that they're willing to do this, and it also makes me wonder whether some of those 'original to LoR champs' will eventually be introduced to League of Legends as well.
And just like Yipp I am also very excited to see some Void champion cards!
I'm also excited to hear that they'll eventually introduce non-LoL champions, since I was scared that they might do something strange like release fewer champions or multiple versions of champions. It'll also be interesting to see how LoL will interpret the abilities of LoR champions, since it's been only the other way around so far.
"Expect card cosmetics in the future"
Yep, they're introducing alternate arts for the cards. Make way too much sense not to
They'll probably also have "golden" versions of cards, like Hearthstone does, though I can also see them going the Gwent route, at least for the champions.
I wonder if it will be cards, or only Champions, something akin to skins in LOL. They are already doing card backs and boards, maybe the card art is the next step.
New art specifically for the Champions is a cool idea, actually!
