As you probably know by now, Riot Games has just announced Legends of Runeterra and we have a whopping 316 cards - and that's not even counting the tokens! While looking at the card database, some of the cards caught our eye, all of which for a certain reason; They're just like cards from Hearthstone, some glaringly so.
Let's take a look at those similar cards.
Don't forget to give us a follow on Facebook and Twitter or join us on our Discord to talk about Runeterra!
He Got It Out! And Moved It... To A Different Card Game.
Our friendly Possessed Villager we saw back in Whispers of the Old Gods seems to have gotten everything out of his system, and transferred it over to somewhere else. That somewhere else would be Riot's new card game (such a toxic relationship).
And yeah, there's Mecharoo, but this is more on flavor.
Runeterra Rolled Need (or Weed)
Do you think Avarosan Sentry secretly smokes weed in that tower? That would explain why his effect is a Last Breath.
Silver in Originality, Gold in Hilarity
Fewer stats as its Hearthstone counterpart, but still just as silly.
Keeping With The C's.
In the midst of transferring to a different card game, it also seems to have forgotten that it can hit enemies.
Now With 100% Less Card Draw!!!
Arguably the biggest meme card in the game from Hearthstone, and it's in Legends of Runeterra. Sure, it doesn't cycle itself anymore, but who cares? It's Purify.
Quite the Conspiracy
Looking at another card, copying it, and making it a little bit different. Some call it plagiarism. He calls it "conspiring".
The Identity Crisis Continues
Poor [Hearthstone Card (Succubus) Not Found]. She thought she had everything figured out when she became a Felstalker. Turns out, that was only the beginning.
The Scales Have Tipped
Don't tell him that he copied Druid of the Flame or he'll snap at you.
There Are No Goons, There Is Only Grime
I guess someone took the "grimy" part of the name a little too literally. He should probably take a shower.
It Still Goes On
Things may look a little different now, but we still don't have an answer to the lifelong question: How long can this go on?
Reclaiming the Idea
After Wretched Reclaimer claims the friendly Reincarnation effect for Hearthstone in their most recent set, Saviors of Uldum, Chronicler of Ruin is announced and claims the same effect for Legends of Runeterra. Did Chronicler of Ruin claim the effect first during production, or did they try to claim it after Wretched Reclaimer claimed it themselves?
A Literal Copycat
It feels someone took a little bit too much inspiration from their main competitor. Very shady indeed.
I Didn't See This Coming
In all fairness, it's hard to foresee this.
(Bonus) The Meme Transcends
If you thought you would escape the memes when you moved to a different card game... Think again.
(Bonus) Hearthstone Called, It Wants Its Keyword Back. Oh, Wait...
It just so happens that Legends of Runeterra has a keyword called Elusive. Mechanically, their version is basically Flying from Magic: The Gathering, but it shares the same name as the mechanic from Hearthstone that we've been trying to keyword forever. One only has to wonder...
If you want to explore all the cards of Legends of Runeterra, we've got you covered with our FULL Card Database!

[Hearthstone Card (Culling strike) Not Found] 3 mana fast Shadow Word: Pain.
Thermogenic beam= Forbidden Flame
It seems that not everyone caught on to the fact that this article was intended to be taken lightheartedly.
It seems to me the same old card game, that try to bring some very good art to cover the fact that the gameplay isn't innovative at all.
Or am I wrong?
I prefer Hearthstone style of art, after all.
Loot hoarder still a classic
No surprise for me, that Rito copy cat Blizzard
Wait since when "cant be target by spells" is Flying from MtG? Its Hexproof
Shroud, actually. Hexproof the owner can still target, while shroud no one can.
Mechanically, Legend of Runeterra's Elusive is like Flying, not Hearthstone's.
In all fairness, not copying anything after 5 years of hearthstone is near impossible. Among over 300 base cards there got to be some similarity.
Also, the stats/mana ratio seems to be very close to HS. This makes the cards easy to understand for us hearthstoners and i like it!
I really don’t like the text arrangement in those cards. It feels Strange that the card name is higher or lower on the card dependent on the size of the text.
Try copying Magic as Hearthstone, practically every mechanic besides Discover was a 'theft'.
There used to be a time when HS similarities to MtG were pointed out, which is only fair when influences are notable and anchored in time. Now, is Riot paying tribute with subtle Easter eggs - to put it lightly - or is this a straight case of plagiary?
What do you think?
My favorite is Purify because it is such a bad card and it even has the exact same name in both games.
My second favorite is druid of the flame because the effect seems so random that it is almost a miracle that there is an exact copy of it in both games.
the aristocrat sold it for me
Which one?
With every new card game revealed I'm amazed by just how simple yet ingenious the hearthstone card template/design is. Something about them makes them much more attractive to the eye, and inviting to play than their counterparts.
Yeah, it blows my mind about how good and appealing Hearthstone's card frames are.
I don't hate the Runeterra ones, I've certainly seen worse, but I have not found a single digital card game that has good looking card frames when compared to the likes of Hearthstone or physical games like Magic and Pokemon.
The Runeterra ones fit the LoL universe though which is maybe why I don't hate them. Playing LoL for as many years as I did, one gets accustomed to certain designs.
I think a lot of why the Hearthstone frames are so good is because they are kinda flat, not super flashy and metallic (though they do have some metal bits ofc). You can actually believe they could be paper cards. The readability of their card text is also very good, I do find the Runeterra ones to be a bit on the small side.
Too much info to not even try the game
Any new game can be overwhelming. Just play the game and learn as you go. Thasts how we did it in the past... lol im old.
Nhaa you didn't get what I wanted to say: you gave me so much stuff that I would be a shame if I didn't even try the game
Oh, sorry about that. I thought you were saying that so much info is overwhelming, so you arent even going to bother trying the game. I totally misunderstood what you meant :)
