From Reddit and the Ask Riot section of the League of Legends website we have a couple of new pieces of information about additional regions for Legends of Runeterra. We've currently got 6 regions (Freljord, Noxus, Ionia, Piltover & Zaun, Demacia, and The Shadow Isles) and several existing ones in LoL, such as Targon, Shurima, Ixtal, and The Void. Which region are you most looking forward to seeing?
Quote From Riot AlphaLvSim Just checked with folks, and yeah, can confirm that set 2 will add a region
From the "Ask Riot" post someone submitted the question "Are you going to add new regions to Legends of Runeterra? What about champions who aren’t from any region, like Fiddlesticks? Does that mean they’ll never be in the game?" This is what the Game Content Product Lead had to say.
Quote From Riot Dovagedys Yes! We’re definitely going to add new regions to Legends of Runeterra.
When it comes to champions that historically haven’t been connected to a specific region—we don’t use that as a restriction when deciding which champs to include in future releases. In Legends of Runeterra, we need rosters of champions to fit within each region, but some champs are more flexible than others when it comes to where we can potentially assign them. For example, Garen or Jarvan IV are more restricted in that they are both Demacian, “now and forever.” But champions like Teemo, Riven, or Tahm Kench are far more likely to wander throughout different areas of Runeterra. We want to use that variance to ensure every champion can find a spot on a roster. We have the most flexibility with champions that haven’t been commonly connected with specific regions throughout Runeterra, such as Fiddlesticks, Brand, Ryze, Annie, etc.

I just want them to keep making cohesive themes. When I first heard of this, I thought "Oh great, this is going to be like Dota AutoChess and TFT where nothing is going to be intuitive unless you play the associated MOBAs", but they actually did an EXCELLENT job in creating distinct and memorable identities for each region. Ionia is martial arts themed and all about stuns, recalls, and controlling your opponent's minions; Shadow Islands is spooky themed and all about having your own minions die; Frejlord is ice themed and all frost bite and enrage mechanics... And since there's no neutral cards, deciding which regions you'll play is a huge decision. I'm still not 100% sold on the naming and the weird icons, but otherwise I love what they are doing here.
Disappointed Lissandra wasn't part of the original Freljord lineup :( Leona and Lissandra are my favorite champs.
Hoping for Bilgewater, has a lot of champions to pick from and could get some fun mechanics
pirates, guns, more pirates, more guns, sharks, everything about piracy and shipping and sea. :P
I hope Miss Fortune will be great card since she is one of my favorite champs.
But I guess Ionia will stay as my favorite region because of Karma and Akali. :)
I really wanna know how'D they'd use Gangplank
And yet Blizzard cant add Death Knight, Monk or Demon Hunter...
If they could balance 9 classes, I'd trust them to add in more. Been proven pretty consistently they can't though :D
I believe there are many reasons why Blizzard simply doesn't add a 10th class.
We already have Death Knights cards in the game (through Arfus and The Lich King) so adding them in as a class would also be a bit confusing and obscure. True that Monk and Demon Hunter don't have this problem, but they still have all of the other problems.
The biggest and most foremost is retroactive presence. In other words, they'd have to add about 140+ cards to the game just for that one class to make up for the difference between other classes, and they'd need to add them to every set with the same distribution as the other classes, which in turn, will also affect pack openings for every set. In the present day, do you design the class as if was there the whole time and follow old expansion rules, or as if it's now just being added? They'd also have to add new rewards to the old adventures, and they'd need to add a 10th class to create for things like Dungeon Run and the final Lich King battle. What about Mean Streets of Gadgetzan? Do they join an existing crime family and offset the 3-3-3 balance, or do they not join one at all and feel out of place with the other 9 classes?
Another problem that arises when making a 10th class is the design of the class. What Hero Power will it have? What mechanics will it have? How do you make it different than other classes? These problems are all extremely prominent in the community of people who try to make custom classes. They'd basically have to go through that whole slew of figuring things out from the bottom up again, that the fan community also does.
They'd also need to completely redesign the menus to accommodate for the new class.
As much as I love custom classes, adding a 10th class to the game is not very practical or easy, and there's not that much benefit to doing so.
I thought the issue with adding a 10th class was more of an aesthetic thing. Yes they talk about balance but they're also VERY finnicky about layout. It took them how many expansion to double the available deck count? It's been only recently that they created a new interface to deal with both arena and battlegrounds.
If they decide to add them in some time, I don't think that they need to add older expansion and adventure cards for the class. I mean, standard makes it easier. it can be unbalanced for wild but at some year's start, I think that new expansion's cards can be enough for a new class.
I agree completely with you except the stuff I mentioned above. Just wanted to say that.
