MARVEL SNAP just unveiled its roadmap for 2023 in a post on their website. What does it have in store, and what do all these things mean? Let's read on to find out!

2023 Roadmap

Quote From MARVEL SNAP

It’s hard to believe that we launched MARVEL SNAP globally just a little under two months ago! And since then, thanks to YOU, we’ve won multiple awards, including Best Mobile Game at the Game Awards, and released a fun animated cinematic ‘HERO’ with some of our favorite musicians.

We’ve always said that Global Launch is the beginning of our journey together, and we weren’t kidding. Your feedback (in places like our discord community) impacts what we prioritize, focus on, or change. We’re excited about what the future holds; let’s talk a bit about that future.

Let's jump in, shall we?

The Quick Bits

Our thoughts on some things coming soon:

  • Artist credits are finally coming to MARVEL SNAP; soon you'll be able to see the name of the artist who created your favorite Variant. The community has been asking for this since beta.
  • The Infinity Split Mod Details is referring to the ability to see which Split Mods a particular card has, in the same screen that will show Artist Credits. This should be a neat way to see just how blinged out one of your opponent's cards is.
  • We don't know the details on name changes - how often you can do it, and if it will cost currency to change your name. But if you want to upgrade your name (not us, ours is perfect), you'll get that chance.

Our thoughts on some of the things down the road:

  • Smart Decks sound interesting; the deck-building in MARVEL SNAP isn't too complicated, but it could still be worth testing to see what a machine comes up with if given the opportunity.
  • Unranked Mode will be the perfect salve for those times when we need to play a weird deck to complete Daily Missions, so that's a huge QoL improvement.
  • The team is looking to "use Battle Mode in fun new ways." That could very likely become the start of MARVEL SNAP's official competitive scene.
  • Collectible Emotes sounds like new cosmetics to open from Reserves and Caches, which might mess with our odds of getting a Variant from those sources and we're not sure we'll like that.
  • "Booster Magnets," we assume, means more things to spend Boosters on. We'll see what they come up with.

Battle Mode

Battle Mode gets its own section because there's a lot to break down. First, we'll let the developers use their words to describe it:

Quote From MARVEL SNAP

Battle Mode is a new way to play MARVEL SNAP. In Battle Mode, each player starts with 10 health, and the winning player deals damage to their opponent equal to the stakes of the game. If you doubled down and SNAPPED, you’ll do 4 damage to your opponent instead of 2 – or retreat early and only lose 1 health! Players will play a series of games against each other with their same deck until one player has no health left.

The way it works is simple. You either CREATE a match or JOIN a match. The player that creates a match gets a code they’ll need to share with their friend.

We’re aiming to release this in the next month or two and hope you’re as excited as we are to play vs your friends or organize fun community competitions!

We heard most of these details before, when the previous Roadmap released, but here we get a little more. It sounds like Battle Mode won't be releasing at the same time as a "Friends List" (that looks like it'll be part of "Guilds"), instead, you'll share a code with your real-world friend (involving gross things like eye contact, probably) in order to do battle.

While the social aspects of this seem like a bummer, it's pretty great for a nascent competitive scene. Players won't have to add random strangers to their friends list for Round 2 of a throwaway Open; rather, they'll just post their game code to a Discord channel or MySpace page (is that what the kids are doing this day, MySpace?) so the other player can see it, and they're off. We feel like that's less worry for a Tournament Director: they can tell one half of the lobby to Create the match, then distribute the codes to their respective foes. This should help community organizers run a decent tournament without too much hassle.
