Among all of the games announced during the State of Play, Summer Games Fest main show, and Xbox Showcase, there were a lot of announcements (and there's more to come in the Nintendo Direct) and new games. One particularly exciting one was the announcement of Crazy Taxi: World Tour, bringing the arcade racer back onto modern technology.
Technology that may be a little too modern because it was confirmed by SEGA that the game utilizes generative AI to some degree. Something that has proven to leave a sour taste in the mouths of some people. During the State of Play, it was announced that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis would release in February of 2027, though as is the case with Crazy Taxi, people have noticed that Crystal Dynamics have disclosed usage of generative AI on the game's Steam page.
They had clarified anything that was developed by generative AI was only temporary, and that everything made with the AI was either scrapped entirely or re-iterated by humans. This bears the question that does something count as human-made art if the foundation was made by AI and then updated by humans?
Quote From Crystal Dynamics The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:
AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content. Any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team.
The usage of AI in video games (and almost everything for that matter) has been controversial in recent years. Despite this, companies continue to use it anyway.
