Updated 2 hours ago by

Blizzard is bringing a Commander-style singleton format to Hearthstone called Warchief, debuting first as an experimental Tavern Brawl with massive 99-card decks. Players will use a new hero power to summon a Warchief, with Jaina, Garrosh, and Thrall teased so far.

Everything We Know About Hearthstone Warchief, a New Singleton Format

Magic the Gathering's Commander format is coming to Hearthstone and it's called Warchief. Blizzard has not announced an exact release date for it yet, but it will be making it's debut as a Tavern Brawl. This brawl is an experimental format. Let's see what Blizzard has announced so far.

Huge Decks in Warchief

Decks are massive in Hearthstone Warchief, much like in MTG's Commander format. A Warchief deck contains 99 cards and they all must be singleton (think Reno rules). What cards would you want in a deck that large?

The format will makes its debut with pre-constructed decks in a Tavern Brawl. We don't have deck lists yet, but Blizzard is looking forward to everyone's feedback once we see the brawl launch and you get a chance to play.

Summoning Your Warchief

Everyone gets a new hero power in Warchief which allows you to summon your Warchief to the field. We haven't seen what makes any of the Warchiefs special, but we do have three names teased:

  • Jaina, Ruler of Theramore

  • Garrosh, Warchief of the Horde

  • Thrall, Lord of the Clans

There is nothing that says this format is going to be anything but a Tavern Brawl, but it's a very interesting place to test the waters and see what is possible with a much larger deck.

That's everything we know so far about Hearthstone's Warchief format. Are you interested?
