Guide to Building a Bobsled Coaster in RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 & 2

The Bobsled Coaster is a Roller Coaster featured in RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 and all future installments. Certain versions of the game refer to it as the "Bobsleigh Coaster", but for the sake of brevity, guides will always refer to it as the "Bobsled Coaster".

Building a Bobsled Coaster

The Bobsled Coaster is one of the most notorious coaster types in the game, for being difficult and expensive to build, and not rewarding the players with a ride that truly makes up for its difficulties. It however can be a good teaching tool for learning about how to not build coasters that go too fast. If you can properly learn how to build a Bobsled Coaster, your skill as a coaster designer will shoot through the roof.

The coaster does not contain very many different track pieces, ironically making it fairly easy for players to pick up and start learning in spite of its difficulty to build them. The only truly "special" track piece on the coaster are the helixes.

The limited selection of track pieces are not what makes it difficult though. Instead, that honor goes to the fact that there's no wheels running underneath the track like most other coaster types, which makes it possible for it to fly off of the track if it goes over an incline too fast.

For all rides that are capable of doing this, the threshold for this is 31mph (50km/h) for gentle-to-level track pieces, and it's slightly higher at 38mph (62km/h) for level-to-gentle track pieces. Because the coaster's top speed requirement of 26mph (42km/h) is very close to both of these, trying to sidestep the issue by slowly crawling around the track is not a viable strategy.

Trains also go faster when they're full compared to when they're empty, so if a train is able to complete a test run without flying off the track, it might still be able to fly off the track once it fills up with guests. Ideally, the train should traverse a slope at about 5mph (8km/h) slower than the derailing threshold speeds to give yourself a buffer.

It should also be noted that the speed limit only applies to the first car of the train. If the first car is able to successfully navigate the hill without crashing, every other car in the train will also safely navigate it no matter how fast they're going.

Despite what you might be inclined to believe, Bobsled Coasters cannot crash by taking turns too quickly. Down below, you can see a Bobsled Coaster going over the smallest possible turn size at a speed of over 100mph and it still won't crash.

As a result of its ability to fly off the tracks, that means that helixes are much more important on a Bobsled Coaster compared to most other coaster types since it's the only means of changing the track's elevation without creating the possibility of derailing the trains (other than the chain lift and the drop right after it). This in turn makes the size and price of these coasters sneak up on you more than you might expect. Helixes are quite expensive, and you'll almost assuredly need them on this coaster type, so the price will quickly add up. Even two small helixes with two banked straight track pieces costs more than $500.00, and that's with the bottom helix starting on ground level. Built high in the air, and they'll cost even more.

The risk of flying off the track can be avoided entirely if you never use any inclined tracks other than the initial chain lift and first drop afterwards, but this will make helixes even more of a necessity, meaning that the coaster will become even more expensive.

OpenRCT2 adds a "ghost test" option to allow you to test a ghost train on the track of the ride to be able to see if it's moving too fast through a certain section. In Vanilla RCT2 though, your only option is to eyeball it and hope you judged it correctly when you finish the ride.

Due to its nature of being a slow, bulky coaster type, it's very easy to overdesign them either by accident, or because there's no simply no easy way to navigate its speed limitations. Ideally, your Bobsled Coasters should be designed compactly to avoid being overdesigned and too expensive, like the Schweizer Bobbahn in Heide-Park.

Vehicles

The Bobsled Coaster has four different vehicle types, and it also holds a rather unique distinction of being the only ride in the game that can fly off the track and hold multiple cars per train, and the only one that can hold more than one guest per train. This means that the trains will maintain more momentum through the ride than other rides capable of derailing, so you'll need to be even more careful with how you build them.

As a result, differences in guest weight is more of a factor on the coaster than other rides that can derail. This is why it's possible for a Bobsled Coaster to safely operate for several years only to finally crash once a load of the heaviest guests in the game get on the ride. Even just adding or removing one car from a train can change the ride dramatically.

The standard Bobsled Trains originate from the first game. The 6-seater Bobsleds come from RCT2, and "Black Death Trains" and "Penguin Trains" come both of RCT2's expansion packs.

The difference between the standard Bobsled Trains and the Penguin Trains are entirely cosmetic. The Black Death Trains are the same as the other trains in function, but because of their larger size, a station will not be able to hold as many Black Death Train cars as it will for the other two trains, which will also result in the Black Death Trains losing momentum quicker than if you were to run the same track with the other train types.

The 6-seater Bobsleds however, are very different than the other vehicles because they cannot be ran as trains. Each bobsled instead acts as its own "train", which results in it being the lightest of all vehicles on the coaster type and therefore also the one that loses momentum the fastest.

Every vehicle on the coaster can hold only two guests, except for the 6-seater Bobsleds which predictably holds six.

Stats

The stats of a Bobsled Coaster tend to be low to medium, making them very big and expensive for what you get.

Because of their ability to fly off the track, Bobsled Coasters don't get a stat benefit from its speed or its drops since these generally need to be kept low on the coaster to prevent it from being too dangerous (and helixes do not count as drops). Even though all of its stat bonuses are fairly decent for a coaster type, the Bobsled's limitations in design prevents it from being able to make good use of it.

Because of this, getting good stats on a Bobsled Coaster is quite difficult. It's fairly typical for a Bobsled Coaster to have an Excitement Rating of less than 6.00, even if you spruce it up with some scenery.

A side effect of it being able to derail is the fact that you can't build a design with too much Intensity or too much Nausea as the derailing speed threshold is too low for this to become a problem.

The Bobsled Coaster has both the highest top speed and the highest ride length requirement in the game, requiring a top speed of at least 26mph (42kmh) and a length of at least 1,214ft (370m), both of which it shares with the Suspended Swinging Coaster. This makes the Bobsled Coaster bad for coaster spamming, and innately difficult to build since you will need to be near the derailing threshold for the coaster to not get penalized in stats.

Throughput & Profit

Bobsled Coasters are some of the least efficient coaster types in the game due to the size of their vehicles and those vehicles being able to hold only two guest at a time (6-seater Bobsleds not withstanding). By design, its average speed is slower than most other coaster types, and its stats are on the lower end of the spectrum, meaning that you also can't charge as much for them.

On a realistic, but still somewhat optimized design like this one below me, you will probably only be able to handle about 1500 guests per hour, which is lower than what most "big" coaster types are able to generate for similar buildings costs and they will have a higher ticket price.

Verdict

The Bobsled Coaster is one of the weakest coaster types in the game. It's expensive, bulky, and its stats are not great for the amount of work you need to put into them. They're hard to design because they can fly off the track, and they're not very efficient because they can't hold very many guests and can't traverse their tracks very fast.

It is however, a very good coaster for immersive parks, and learning how to properly build a Bobsled Coaster will unlock a lot of knowledge into building other coaster types.
