Guide to Awards in RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 & 2

Awards are a feature present in all games.

(A custom Build your own Six Flags Over Texas with the "Best custom designed rides" award)

Getting Awards

The way getting awards works is actually really simple.

At the start of every month, the game will pick an award at random. Each award has a list of requirements that you need to meet, and if you happen to meet all of the requirements of the award the game picks, you will get that award.

Due to the random nature of how this works, this means that it's possible to be eligible for an award indefinitely and never get it. Since the award is decided as soon as the next month rolls over, you can exploit this by saving on the final day of a month and then reload that save if you don't get an award when the next month starts.

Some awards are also not possible to obtain while you have other awards active. This mostly comes up when a "best" and "worst" award pertain to the same aspect of park management. For example, you cannot have the "Best Park Food" award and "Worst Park Food" award active at the same time, even if you fulfill the requirements for one of them while you still have the other.

You can only have 4 awards active at a time. If you happen to be eligible for an award while you already have 4 of them active, the game will not "bank" the award when you have space to get it. You will lose that award forever.

Effects of Awards

There are two different categories of awards, Positive and Negative. Each award will either increase or decrease your natural guest generation by 25% while the award is active. These bonuses stack multiplicatively and not additively. In other words, having two positive awards at the same time increases your natural guest generation by 56% instead of 50% (1.25 x 1.25 = 1.56).

A side effect of this is that the more positive awards you have, the more prominent their bonuses are, whereas the more negative awards you have, the less prominent their bonuses are. With the maximum of 4 awards active, your natural guest generation can be as high as 244% of the normal guest spawning rate with 4 positive awards (1.25 x 1.25 x 1.25 x 1.25), or be as low as 32% of the normal guest spawning rate with 4 negative awards (0.75 x 0.75 x 0.75 x 0.75).

Awards stay active for 5 months.

The spawning rate of guests from advertisement campaigns are not affected by awards.

List of Awards

There are a total of 17 awards in the game. 12 are positive and 5 are negative. The list will run through them in alphabetical order.

Positive Awards

Best Custom-Designed Rides Best_Custom-Designed_Rides_Award

Requirements

  • At least 6 custom-designed tracked rides with an Excitement Rating of at least 5.50.

Notes

  • A ride is considered "custom-designed" if it was built choosing the "Build custom design" button. Even if you were the person who created them, pre-built designs will not count.

Best Gentle Rides

Requirements

  • At least 10 opened Gentle Rides that haven't had a crash with fatalities in the past 4 months or a crash without fatalities in the past month.

Notes

  • If you have any Gentle Rides that have crashed too recently, you will still be eligible for the award if you have enough of them that have not crashed.

  • Without using cheats, the only Gentle Ride that is capable of crashing is the Ghost Train.

Best Park Food Best_Park_Food_Award

Requirements

  • At least 7 food stalls.

  • At least 4 different types of food stalls.

  • At least 1 food stall for every 128 guests in your park.

  • Fewer than 13 guests in your park thinking "I'm hungry".

  • You do not have the "Worst Park Food" award.

Notes

  • Drink stalls do not count as food stalls.

  • The game checks for food stalls and not food items. Different stalls will count as different stall types even if you sell the same item (for example, the Fries Shop and Fries Stall count as different types of food stalls even though they both only sell the same item, which in this case is fries).

Best Park Toilets Best_Bathrooms_Award

Requirements

  • At least 4 Restrooms.

  • At least 1 Restroom for every 128 guests.

  • Fewer than 17 guests in your park thinking "I need to go to the toilet/bathroom."

Best Park Value Best_Value_Park_Award

Requirements

  • Your park charges an entrance fee.

  • Your park entrance fee is less than 25% of the combined maximum ticket price of all rides in your park.

  • You don't have the "Most Disappointing Park" award.

  • You don't have the "Worst Park Value" award.

Notes

  • The maximum ticket price of rides decreases over time, which means that it's possible to be eligible for this award for a while and then stop being eligible for it once the maximum price of some rides drop. Once a ride is 200 months old, its price will reset to its 64-88 month old price and will stay at that price indefinitely.

  • The required value does not take the maximum amount of money that guests can spawn with in any given park. If you build enough rides, you can eventually reach a game state where your park entrance fee is the absolute maximum for all guests to be able to enter the park with and still be below 25% of the combined maximum ticket price of all of your rides.

  • You cannot get this award if your park only charges a fee for the rides and not for the entrance. You can still get the award if you charge for both (only possible in RCT1 and OpenRCT2).

Best Roller Coasters

Requirements

  • At least 6 opened Roller Coasters that haven't had a crash with fatalities in the past 4 months or a crash without fatalities in the past month.

Notes

  • If you have any roller coasters that have crashed too recently, you will still be eligible for the award if you have enough of them that have not crashed.

  • The Water Coaster counts as both a Water Ride and Roller Coaster, and thus, will contribute to both this award and the "Best Water Rides" award.

  • Despite what the award name might suggest, neither the stats nor the popularity of the coasters are relevant.

Best Staff Best_Staff_Award

Requirements

  • At least 20 staff members.

  • At least 1 staff member of each staff type.

  • At least 1 staff member for every 32 guests in your park.

  • You don't have the "Untidiest Park" award.

Best Water Rides

Requirements

  • At least 6 opened water rides that haven't had a crash with fatalities in the past 4 months or a crash without fatalities in the past month.

Notes

  • If you have any water rides that have crashed too recently, you will still be eligible for the award if you have enough of them that have not crashed.

  • The Water Coaster counts as both a water ride and a roller coaster, and thus, will contribute to both this award and the "Best Roller Coasters" award.

  • Despite what the name of the award might suggest, neither the stats nor the popularity of the water rides are relevant.

Most Beautiful Park

Requirements

  • At least 1 out of every 128 guests in park thinking "Great scenery!"

  • Fewer than 16 guests thinking either "This path is disgusting", "The litter here is really bad", or "The vandalism here is really bad".

  • You don't have the "Most Disappointing Park" award.

  • You don't have the "Untidiest Park" award.

Notes

  • In parks that naturally start with a lot of trees or scenery, you are often eligible for this award without even trying to be.

Most Dazzling Ride Color Schemes

Requirements

  • At least 5 and more than half of all tracked rides in your park have either "Bright green", "Bright pink", "Bright purple" or "Light orange" as its primary track color.

  • You don't have the "Most Disappointing Park" award.

Notes

  • Rides without buildable track pieces do not count.

  • Only the left-most color in the ride's "Main color scheme" counts as its primary track color. This means that a ride can be mostly (or even entirely) a different color by using the alternate color scheme options, but it will still count as long as the left-most color of "Main color scheme" is an eligible color, even if no visible part of the track is actually painted that color.

Safest Park

Requirements

  • None of your rides have had a crash with fatalities in the past 4 months or a crash without fatalities in the past month.

  • Fewer than 3 guests thinking "The vandalism here is really bad."

Tidiest Park Tidiest_Park_Award

Requirements

  • At least 1 out of every 64 guests in your park thinking "This park is really clean and tidy."

  • Fewer than 6 guests thinking either "This path is disgusting", "The litter here is really bad", or "The vandalism here is really bad".

  • You don't have the "Most Disappointing Park" award.

  • You don't have the "Untidiest Park" award.

Negative Awards

Most Confusing Park Layout

Requirements

  • At least 10 guests thinking "I'm lost" or that they can't find a certain ride they're looking for.

  • At least 1 out of every 64 guests in your park thinking "I'm lost" or that they can't find a certain ride they're looking for.

Notes

  • Due to how notoriously simple the AI in the game are, it might become difficult to avoid this award in large parks, even if your path layouts have no obvious flaws in them.

  • On small or medium parks, getting this award most likely means that you've accidentally trapped a group of guests somewhere and they can't get out.

Most Disappointing Park Most_Dissapointing_Park_Award

Requirements

  • Your park rating is below 650.

  • At least half of your rides have a popularity of 6 or lower (from a scale of 0 to 255).

Untidiest Park

Requirements

  • At least 1 out of every 16 guests in your park thinking either "This path is disgusting", "The litter here is really bad", or "The vandalism here is really bad".

  • You don't have the "Best Staff" award.

  • You don't have the "Tidiest Park" award.

  • You don't have the "Most Beautiful Park" award.

Worst Park Food

Requirements

  • Have 2 or fewer different types of food stalls.

  • Have fewer than 1 food stall for every 256 guests in your park.

  • At least 16 guests thinking "I'm hungry".

  • You don't have the "Best Park Food" award.

Notes

  • As with the "Best Park Food" award, drink stalls do not count as food stalls.

  • When you start a new scenario, you should check how many different types of food stalls it has available from the start. If it has 2 or fewer, it's a good idea to research Shops & Stalls until you get enough food stalls. Since maximum research takes one month to get a new item, this means it's possible to get this award on the first month of a scenario that starts with 2 or fewer different types of food stalls, without the player being able to prevent this.

  • On the other end of the spectrum, if a scenario starts with at least 3 different types of food stalls, you are safe. It may be worthwhile to build them during the first month of the park to prevent getting this award early.

Worst Park Value

Requirements

  • Your park charges an entrance fee.

  • Your park entrance fee is more than 50% of the combined maximum ticket price of all rides in your park.

  • You don't have the "Best Park Value" award.

Notes

  • If you get this award, this means that your park entrance fee is high enough to penalize your guest spawning rate since the threshold for this to occur is lower than the threshold for being eligible for this award.

  • As the maximum ticket price of rides deteriorates over time, this means that you will slowly become closer to the threshold of being eligible for this award, although this will realistically never become a problem.

  • Just like the "Best Park Value" award, you can still get this award if you charge for both the entrance and the rides (only possible in RCT1 and OpenRCT2). When guests pay for the entrance (even if it's as little as $0.10), the maximum ticket price for all rides will decrease by 75%. This means you're more likely to be eligible for this award if you charge for both, although this once again shouldn't ever become a problem.

  • Once your park gets big enough, it becomes impossible to charge your park entrance fee high enough to be eligible for this award without turning guests away.
