Following yesterday's teaser announcement, Second Dinner, Marvel, and Nuverse have just unveiled their newest addition to the Collectible Card Game universe multiverse: MARVEL SNAP!
And yes, the bold title is very much meant to be displayed like that. We already have a good amount of details to share, based on the hot announcements and a couple of official gameplay videos:
Quick Facts:
- No official release date as of yet, but the game is said to be arriving "later this year".
- Sign-ups for a closed limited Android beta are already available.
- The title will be accessible on both PC and Mobile, in 13 different languages to begin with.
- It's meant to be a free-to-play experience; but as with any such business model, in-game purchases are to be expected.
- A collectible card battler promises plenty of action with 3-minute long matches on average!
- Your decks will consist of 12 unique cards, with over 150 of them to choose from at launch.
- Both players act simultaneously, no traditional turns as we know them.
- The intent is to do away with waiting around - your turns and your opponent's turns become "layered on top of each other".
- You compete for cosmic cubes - collect more of them than the other side!
- This is where the "SNAP" option comes in, doubling the stakes for anyone feeling confident in their victory.
- Different versions of numerous Marvel characters to be found within.
- Distinct base cards have their own special abilities to offer.
- Over 50 locations to play in, each with its own set of game-changing effects.
- Securing 2 out of the 3 locations available per match is the key to success here.
- Assemble your team, collect numerous card art variants, enjoy your fast-paced competition.
- Regular seasons, consequent updates, mind games, and high skill cap are all part of the package.
Official Announcement and Gameplay Video
In this case, no amount of words can convey the idea behind this "revolutionary game experience" better than an actual look into the inner workings of MARVEL SNAP itself. Luckily, we've been given just that:
Mobile-first is the mantra here, although that does not mean 'mobile-only'. We can expect a greater focus on optimizing the remote play experience. So by the time the title is ready to launch globally on various mobile devices, there should be at least an early access PC version available.
Quote From Ben Brode We grew up obsessively playing CCGs and have spent decades designing them. We want the entire world to fall in love with card battlers just like we have. MARVEL SNAP is unlike any card battler ever made. We’ve worked tirelessly to ensure that the game is super deep for hardcore players, while remaining very approachable so everyone can jump in and have a blast.
Does that actually seem and sound appealing? There is an even more in-depth look awaiting, with one very familiar face of former Hearthstone game director Ben Brode taking us on a special trip across various game mechanics:
If that's not enough to satiate your early curiosity, don't be surprised to see certain content creators revealing their behind-the-curtain experiences and footage very soon - for example, you might recognize Trump and Nicholena from the Hearthstone scene. So far they've been full of praise for the team.
How MARVEL SNAP Came To Be
If you've been following along with our occasional updates on the endeavors of various fine folks over at Second Dinner and their ongoing then secret game progress, you might recall how Ben Brode's company - filled with many, many other recognizable members that we have seen spearheading this little card game called Hearthstone once upon a time - has been hard at work for the past four years, making their own (card) game dream come true.
And there is possibly no bigger IP than Marvel in this modern day and age, with its Cinematic Universe's iron grip over the worldwide box office extending for more than a decade now. It would take an actual Thanos' snap to put a halt to this sprawling expansion. The audience is definitely there; not all of them necessarily having much card game experience to speak of.
The formidable partnership crystallizing in the existence of this upcoming title means a new potent contender entering onto the current (digital) CCG scene, with ambitions to properly shake things up later in the year. We are more than curious to see where it all leads from here on now, and how the Second Dinner team's efforts ultimately shape up once the project is live. In a way that's only going to be the beginning of another, fully operational phase. And if you know Marvel, you know they like their steps carefully planned.
Expect to find even more information and detailed coverage on the game in the near future!
Are you going to try to enter the multiverse as soon as you are able? Anything about the entire concept that you find particularly appealing, or perhaps worrisome? We are excited to learn about your first impressions as we all try to wrap our heads around the big news!
Comments
It's awesome to see Brode back in action, and with his charisma he could honestly sell me anything!
First impression - looks very solid. I will try it out for sure (PC only though).
I just hope it's going to be f2p friendly like LoR for example. I don't mind paying for cosmetics but not for cards. I don't want another Hearthstone.
Both players end turn and both reveal their cards.
Will there be a scenario where some On-Reveal effect destroy a non-revealed cards?
I would assume the player who put their cards faster will get their On-Reveal effect first yeah?
EDIT. I do hope to see a Stan Lee card some day.
I like a loot of what they showed
My fear is that with 3 minutes games and only 12 cards games will begin to feel "samey" very fast :/
There will be over 50 location cards at launch (3 of which are randomly chosen each match) and the website mentioned that they are going to add more of those on a weekly bases. I wouldn't worry too much about game variaty.
So it's Gwent, but with Marvel IP and more intricate gameplay.
It looks fun! Playing the cards to the locations is very similar to the physical card game Smash Up. A lot of similar mechanics between the games as well.
I was thinking the same
This game seems cool. Nice to see Brode in this role again so many years later!
This actually looks really fun. Deckbuilding is gonna be quite hard though. You pretty much have to think of every location in the game since some of them are really limiting like Crimson Cosmos (Can only play 4-6 cost cards) and The Space Throne (Can only play 1 card in it) and there's like 50 of them. Maybe it's their intention to make discovering the meta as difficult as possible so that technically every card is viable. It will be chaotic but personally I'm very interested to see where this goes.
Also, the snap mechanic is absolutely going to peak my anxiety. It's a terrifying concept but a very thrilling one.
#Update: As we've kept adding snippets of information following the big announcement, the text has also been largely cleaned up and updated = more details, more context, more to look forward to. They might be onto something here with a far more lively experience on offer!
This looks great; very interested in playing it! Hearthstone on my 15-minute work break is practically impossible, but 3-minutes per game is definitely doable. Gonna see if I can sneak into the beta :D
Looks fun! Excited to see Ben Brode back in action with a new card game.
I'm execited to check it out. The only part of the gameplay I disliked was the X-Mension zone 'cuz of the rng.
Looks like fun. I'll give it a shot for sure.
The game looks pretty interesting actually
Looks to me like Gwent-lite. Placing cards with power scores onto three lanes. Looks great, some cool ideas, cards are beautiful. Could be fun for a bit, but i doubt it's gonna have much staying power for me personally. The short games are definitely the main selling point aimed for mobile market and with the Marvel licensing and advertisement power i can see this game going far.
Marvel BatChest
No turns? 3 minute games? Very interesting. I will definitely be picking the game up...
Edit: I need to stop trying to multi-task while I absorb information lol
It has turns, you just take them at the same time as your opponent. Watch the Walkthrough, it explains it very well.
