Wild is in a terrible state

I have decided I will try and finish around rank 300 this month, and the number of times I have lost on turn one with zero possible counterplay is absurd. Every other game is a Shaman ramping into Ancestral Call and putting out King Neptulon or Y'shaarj. Is there any counter to this?? I know I am going against one because no one is playing Freeze Shaman anymore.

I have been considering running Sap because I am playing Mine Rogue but that feels just as high rolly and I would have to give up Cloak of Shadows for it.

  • Running Savory Deviate Delight is a genius idea. I can't take advantage of it, but I will definitely pass that information along to my friends. Thank you.

  • Pillager rogue is arguably the hardest counter to big shaman. So try that if you're facing nothing but Thrall.

  • The issue with Pillage Rogue is that gets stomped by Pirate Rogue, which is played by a few of the players I come across commonly (not that Mine Rogue does much better, but it can pull a victory with a dirty discount on Wildpaw Gnoll). I also think that deck isn't good against Shamans in general because they run this Scargil murloc package with Mutanus, and Mine Rogue is the only combo deck viable in the meta that can continue to play past that.

  • Very few people play freeze shaman nowadays though. It's all big shaman. And by the time they have scargill/mutanus ready you can most likely otk them already. And if not, pillager rogue is resilient enough to survive losing one or two of its combo pieces and still otk the opponent.

    You're always going to lose to either big shaman or pirate rogue if you try to counter one of the two. That's why they're the only two decks in tier 1, because they counter each others counters. If you want to counter one of them you'll have to accept that the other matchup will be unfavored.

  • Honestly, I went from 119 to dumpster legend. I am going to try again next month, but with a less cute deck. I will try Pillager Rogue now since I don't think I can get back to where I was without a serious time investment. 

    I honestly have not considered that is what makes a deck tier 1. Playing against real pro players has made me realize I do not know as much as I thought I did. This player is playing Quest Mage, who I have not to beat once the 6 times I have played against him. It has been forever since I felt like I have been seriously challenged by Hearthstone.

      Tier 1 decks are defined by their win rates. Usually a win rate of over 55% is a tier 1 deck, against a set of other decks, and of course the data has to be good and clean.

      Hearthstone being what it is, I wouldn't be too concerned with rank. Even good players will concede that ranking up ladder has more to do with attrition than mere skill. Most of the best hearthstone players in the world are grinders; you dont get to high legend MMR by winning 80% of your 10 matches per month. And even the best of the best rack up about 60% win rate against their peers.

      If challenge if what you seek, just play one of those nerve wrecking combo decks like standard mine rogue.

  • You were playing mine rogue, yeah?

    Ice block counters nearly every combo deck except mecha'thun because it buys them two extra turns regardless of what happens. So you going 0-6 isn't that surprising in an unfavored matchup like that.

    I wouldn't beat myself up over it at least.
