(MCN) What're you lookin' to play Day 1?

Submitted 2 years, 5 months ago by

All of the new cards have been revealed, so it's time to talk about the archetypes, packages, and/or individual cards that interest us the most! Naturally, I'll start us off:

To be forthright, I was on the verge of quitting Hearthstone before the reveals began, but something about this expansion pulled me back in. I'm hoping the commitment to moving HS back to the board will actually work out, but we've been here before. I guess we'll see. Anyway, in order by class followed by Neutral:

Demon Hunter: Artificer Xy'mox + the Relics

I don't know where to put them just yet, but they seem fun. I was thinking of a token deck so you can Infuse Xy'mox (and Sire Denathrius?) properly; the Relics have a fairly universal quality to them, so it's just a matter of finding a home.

Druid: Sesselie of the Fae Court and the DR package, Topior the Shrubbagazzor and the Treants/Nature package

All aboard the Druid Train, toot toot! DR Taunt Druid with Hadronox and N'Zoth, the Corruptor is one of my favorite decks of all time, so Sesselie can go right into that alongside Hedge Maze and Death Blossom Whomper. Hopefully the Mini-Set expands on the package further, 'cause there isn't a lot here right now.

Topior is just fucking nuts, and will be quite enjoyable in a deck focused around it or as an additional bonus with Treants. If I don't get Topior in gold I will fix that mistake very quickly.

Mage: Kel'Thuzad, the Inevitable + the Volatile Skeleton cards

Control the board with Frost spells and pings before the...Inevitable...combo of Kael'thas Sinstrider, Brann Bronzebeard, and Kel'Thuzad. Just pulling it off the once might be enough to satisfy me lol. I also hope to make Kel'Thuzad golden, and play him alongside my Kel'Thuzad skin of course :)

Warlock: Lady Darkvein - Going right into my Curselock.

Neutral: Sire Denathrius - Someone will figure out how best to enjoy him, and I want to be there when it happens. Edit: He seems disgusting in Druid, from what little I've seen so far in streams.

Kael'thas Sinstrider - I don't generally do Combo things, but he is a pretty important part of the "Kael'Thuzad" combo.

Stoneborn General and Bog Beast - The General is awesome, will love to cheat that out. Bog Beast is kind of the next Sludge Belcher, a card that saw a lot of play (and still does).

So how about you? What are you hoping to pull + play Day 1?

Kryxis the Voracious Love Deathrattle Demonhunter. I actually love the soft discard stuff they got as well. Seems really interesting for outcast manipulation.

Tome Tampering just looks nuts in wild.

Imp King Rafaam I love rez effects.  Them calling out imps specifically seems like fun to try and break.

The suspicious cards seem entertaining. Trying to guess what the opponent took is a fun subgame.

    Casual Dragon Cardgame enthusiast.

    Having watched the theorycraft stream, there's a few decks I think has potential, and would like to try myself;

Relic token demon hunter - There's some potential in a token dhunter deck with the relic as support. Especially with sinful brand's potential as a finisher.

Wildseed face hunter - Saw how wildseeds work in the theorycraft and it looks strong as hell. Especially considering how bad face hunter was in sunken city, this one has strong potential.

Im almost 100% sure there's going to be at least 30% all playing druids, so at least this one can work well at launch. Somewhat anyway

Skeleton mage - Looks nuts. I was initially cool on the cards Deathborne but if this works its devastating. We all already knew how good Nightcloak Sanctum can be, with two down its almost broken. Probably going to get nerfed if this deck goes up the tier list.

If I get Kel'Thuzad, the Inevitable, I'll be sure to try this out.

Mad duke shaman - For some reason Ive seen zero Theotar, the Mad Duke being played but this is one deck Im excited to try, if only because I know everyone will be playing druid to some capacity.

Load up your hand with useless junk from schooling and then trade your fishys for great stuff. Worth a laugh if nothing else. This is one legendary I'll be crafting because Im 100% convinced it would be playable in some capacity.

    As for individual cards;

Kael'thas Sinstrider - Ive seen plenty of streamers play this card. Seems good even if its nowhere near as insane as its sunstrider cousin. Probably going to try it out myself in token druid and see how that goes.

Imp King Rafaam - I heard his entrance is amazing

I think that Tome Burning is going to be a reasonably strong card so I am going to experiment with that. Particularly in a Sire Denathrius OTK.

On a side note, it would be cool if every class in the deck builder could have one of the general archetypes in the archetype the way Demon Hunter has (Control, Combo, Aggro, etc as opposed to specific Archetypes) since it seems only Demon Hunter can do that.

Mindrender Illucia + The Harvester of Envy because I hate it when the opponent plays cards, so I just take them.

Another deck that yeets the opponent's hands is a Ghastly Gravedigger deck in the style of a Spectral Pillager deck.

Ultra Aggro DH in Wild because Voracious Reader still exists.

If I get The Stonewright I might try out even shaman. Gigantotem seems nuts with Splitting Axe.

If I somehow get a lot of dust, might try out Tome Tampering before it gets banned in wild. Not a warlock player though.

Let's just say this expansion looks interesting enough for me to preorder for the first time in quite a while. Following your example Linkblade,

Aggro Deathrattle Demon Hunter (Wild) - a super successfull friend of mine suggested this would be working and "Aggro Deathrattle" combines my favorite play patterns. Kryxis the Voracious and Magnifying Glaive are the cards I'm hoping to find in my packs.

While Hadronox Druid looks cool, I've dusted my copy of the name giving legendary long ago and am also missing lots of other core cards. Might have a look at a token list with Sire Denathrius as a finisher, but this is low priority for me.

As a former Hunter main, I'm skipping this expansion. Can't see the new cards making any impact in Wild and the Wildseed cards aren't interesting enough for me to get back into Standard.

Mage on the other hand went over the roof with the flavor. Kel'Thuzad, the Inevitable and his army of Skeletons is a day 1 craft for me and I'll gladly play Standard if nobody comes up with a Wild deck that isn't pure garbage. Secret Mage got a lot of updates but I probably won't play it because it's just boring nevertheless.

Paladin feels weird. I can't see where the class is supposed to be going yet, even if there are a few cards I'd like to get my hands on like Elitist Snob. Nothing shiny I'm itching to try out on day 1 though.

Priest might have received the biggest number of cards I want to add to my collection. I'm no fan of the Inner Fire archetype, but the support cards Anduin gets with this expansion are so versatile I can picture them in a lot of decks. I've also kept Kovachut's Thief Priest among my deck lists all these years and I'm looking forward to try and add stuff like The Harvester of Envy or Mysterious Visitor to it.

The Secret package Rogue got may or may not be enough to build a good Wild deck around, but it will certainly be entertaining to bring out Shadowjeweler Hanar once more and Bamboozle my opponents :))

    Totem Shaman. 'Nuff said.

I'll lean back and watch other people figure out which Warlock combo is OP this time, might jump the bandwaggon and capitalize on it though to get closer to that sick 1.000 wins Hero portrait.

Enrage Warrior might be a similar case as Skeleton Mage which is an archetype that's so close to my personal sweet spot that it makes me switch to Standard to play it. I also need a halfway viable deck to use the Sire Denathrius skin with. Might have to craft Captain Galvangar after all :/

When it comes to the Neutral section, I'm super happy about the disruption package we've received with cards like Theotar, the Mad Duke, Ashen Elemental or Steamcleaner. I have high hopes they will help tune down OP combo bullshit in Wild. Crooked Cook is a great draw engine for aggro that provides a nice alternative to Voracious Reader, there's a Deathrattle package that might be on the brink of being good enough for Wild (Masked Reveler, Bog Beast, Sinrunner, Stoneborn General) and who knows what other cards will surprise us.

All in all I'm looking forward to this expansion that brings us a lot of interesting cards and some super cool flavor. May the legendarys flow in your packs and RNGsus ever decide in your favor!

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

Hey I like this thread: let me give my own two cents!

Disclaimer: I haven't watched a single minute of theorycrafting streams, so I don't know anything about how the new cards are.

Demon Hunter - If I manage to open Artificer Xy'mox, then having some Relic shenanigans seems mandatory.

Paladin - Pure Paladin and it's not even close. If I find myself liking the archetype, I may even consider recrafting Lightforged Cariel.

Priest - Thief Priest is one of my most favorite archetypes.

Warrior - I am going to try and see if there's a Unicorn Warrior somewhere hidden among the new cards. Plus Remornia is so cool.

Achievement Hunt - Not really a class, but I am going to complete all the easiest achievements we're going to receive, so that I'll be able to cruise through the first few levels of the reward track. Plus I am a sucker for achievements.

if there is ONE class the Dev team couldn't help but nutting about every time a card was proposed, it's Druid.

    sorry, Priest players

Aside from Theotar, the Mad Duke no must play/own cards in this set really. So, it's primarily going to be Arena as usually with some Highlander decks sprinkled in in Wild. I'm probably starting off with this list right here.

    Arena > Wild > Standard

     Pure Paladin

    Control Rogue

    Control Warrior

    Control Warlock

    Control Mage

and probably Druid if it's the OP deck week 1.

    The world will know doom.

For the first few days, I like to play an old familiar deck to prey on all the opponents still figuring out the new stuff. #sorrynotsorry

So I'll have to think about what will be the best counter to all those early Druids.
