What Are You Playing? August 2024 Edition

Submitted 3 months, 1 week ago by

What are you up to this month? Have any games in mind for the future? Let us know in the comments below!

To answer my own question...not much. I've been playing Early Access titles like Lost Castle 2 and Marvel Rivals' closed beta, or more Elden Ring and Last Epoch. Flintlock was somewhat of a bust, but I'm waiting for their upcoming patch to see if things change for the better. At least for performance, at any rate: the critiques I have regarding the main gameplay won't be going anywhere, I'm sure.

In regards to the future, August is an especially slow time for new games; come September I'll have Wild Bastards and the new Zelda game to play, but this month has almost nothing goin' on to look forward to. I'll have to figure out a different path if I want to keep up a timetable for reviewing things lol. Got any suggestions?

In my case I keep going with Horizon Zero Dawn, Payday 3, Hot Wheels Unleashed and got back to RAID WW2 for some casual matched. Had a big update so I had to try it.

Edit: Also played some Fall Guys and Rocket League with my wife (mostly fall guys)

I've been playing Monster Sanctuary, a metroidvania with turn-based monster combat (similar to Pokemon, I think, but I've played very little Pokemon). Both the exploration and the combat are done well, but I don't think it's an ideal combination, as the detailed but therefore slow combat doesn't match the faster pacing of the platforming exploration. Still, I'm invested in the combat and upgrade system now, so I'll probably play more of it.

I also still want to finish Shadow of the Erdtree. I got to the end boss a few weeks ago, but then my desktop PC broke and this game is too heavy to play on my laptop.

I haven't gone back to Hearthstone and now that I'm off the treadmill I don't think I will jump on again.

I started playing EU4 Extended Timeline with several mods that work with it. It's fun and tedious and annoying trying to conquer the world :)

I recently bought Black Myth: Wukong, and I'm having a blast with it! Frankly amazed that it runs on my computer with Medium settings, but I ain't complainin' lol.

Ooooh I've been curious about that one, there haven't been many reports or tests about it when I last looked for them. Is there any game you can compare to it? Most importantly: How would you rate the difficultiy? I've heard some people say it's as hard as a Soulslike which would be an instant no from me as I don't enjoy that kind of game. The devs themselves say it's way easier afaik. Then there are some other people who say the first few hours are easy mode but then it gets very hard pretty quickly. I'd be very happy to read about your experience in detail if you're willing to share it!

On my end a lot of touching grass has happened in August. Nevertheless, there are a few gaming news:

    • Got some mentoring for Hades and managed to escape with 4 different weapons so far (the shield and the gun are missing). Still enjoying the vibes, having fun exploring new builds and following the story line :-)
    • Used good old Pirate Rogue to get to Wild legend in Hearthstone this month, then climbed from around 900 all the way to 383 with Even Rainbow DK which i'm very proud of :-)) If i find the time, I'll post the deck here and write a guide.

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

I plan to give Black Myth: Wukong a proper review, if that helps 😀

I can say it's kinda like God of War, but with some soulslike elements. You don't lose anything when you die, though, so you can bash your face against all the bosses to your heart's content. The game can be difficult in spots, but it mostly has come down to me being not prepared for the fight: under-leveled, under-geared, low on protective items/healing, and/or just not well versed in my opponent's moveset.

Finally downloaded Dragon Age: Inquisition after getting it for free on Epic a couple of months ago, and I'm now getting into Civilization as well.

I see you playin' it on Discord: how is DA:I? I haven't played a Dragon Age game since Origins, mostly because it seemed to move away from the original gameplay style that I enjoyed, plus it has (had?) that stupid EA launcher even on Steam.

I haven't played a Dragon Age game at all before this one, haha. And yes, it does in fact have that EA launcher. It's really dumb.

I made an elf archer (there's the Skyrim player in me leeching into other games) and I named her Saethi. In the four hours that I've played the game so far, it's quite fun and quite good. I'm not super familiar with party-based RPGs like this, so what I liken it to the most is something like Gauntlet. I'm having fun though and I'm definitely going to keep playing.

Although what is really stupid is that the game doesn't let you plug in a controller to play when you boot the game up. If you want to play with a controller, you have to have your controller already plugged into your computer and then boot the game up.
