What’s up with Hearthstone forum community?

Hi everyone! I wasn’t a forum dweller until I ran across the glorious salt thread on Hearthpwn. I know, I know - Hearthstone is a cool game, but the level of RNG and the nature of card games in general can often be a source of frustration, so I needed a place where I could unleash my inner Kripp.

But gradually I started browsing other threads, look for cool deck ideas and even started sharing some ideas of my own. That was until Hearthpwn announced the great shut down. I stopped reading forum threads one week before the supposed closing date as the activity was dwindling.

And what do I accidentally find out a week ago after logging in to Hearthpwn for the first time in months? That it still works! Yay... ? Well, actually no. Judging by activity there and here, I see that the forum community in Hearthstone fell apart. What was the point of this maneuver by Hearthpwn? It was really weird because as I understood, outofcards was supposed to become a replacement for Hearthpwn, but now we have two forums with low activity.

Am I the only one who feels it’s odd?

Imagine Lord of the Rings ending. Frodo (Hearthpwn) looks at Sam (us) and delivers a most heartbreaking good-bye. But like 10 minutes after boarding the ship, he comes down and says, ‘Nah, I’ll stay. But will live in the basement from now on.’

      The original purpose of Hearthstation Out of Cards *was* to become a replacement for Hearthpwn, as we had known for a while that it was shutting down. Flux wanted to purchase Hearthpwn so he and the rest of us could keep it alive, but he was denied the opportunity. We learned after-the-fact that Hearthpwn would survive under new, completely different management. By then Out of Cards was already under way; hence the two websites/forums.

      Trust me/us, it was not intentional that we would split the community :/

        The split is definitely not ideal and not how I wanted things originally but you know what, I think this was for the best. It'll take us sometime to implement everything we really want so a slowly building community, although frustrating at times, helps us gain more targeted feedback from the people who matter the most - the ones that will actually talk to you.

        When you directly compare the types of engagement the two sites have, Out of Cards goes way above what HearthPwn has ever had. Sure, they got a bunch of people that just swing on by for some decks, but we've got the important part that gives us real strength.

        I'm so proud of the team we've assembled here and will continue to build upon for years to come. The community has also been so welcoming to the idea of Out of Cards and with the support really shows that we're on the right track. FeelsGoodMan.

  • OOC is where you should be. The community here is better than hpwn could ever be. All the best from hpwn came here, and the team that runs this site truly cares about the game, the community, and making the best website for everything hearthstone (and other ccgs).

    While yes the amount of people here is smaller than hpwn at it's peak, people are very active here and overall are much more positive, helpful and encouraging than anything that happened on hpwn. 

    The site is also still just in infancy. They have made major changes and strides since they launched, but they are working every day on making changes/improvements and implementing new features. And they are constantly communicating what features they have planned and are in process of making. 

    And the mods are responsive! I just last night made a suggestion of something I'd like to see on the homepage. The team responded quickly, and by this morning, the feature I had suggested was implemented. You won't find that on any other hearthstone site. 

    My point, large numbers of forum dwellers that hpwn had at it's peak, doesn't make a good forum. The quality of people, and a caring mod group is what makes a good forum. OOC has both of those. 

    Visit this site daily, and you will see. They are constantly putting out various articles making this by far the best place to get together and talk hearthstone. 

  • My experience with OOC has been very positive. The community welcomes feedback and enjoys hearing differentiating opinions. I will agree that the information/articles uploaded to OCC are awesome, the time put into this site is greatly appreciated!

      Yes!

      So far this site is Awesome and way better than Hearthpwn ever was! The community is way more welcoming and a lot less trolls that answer a normal question with something toxic or irrellevant!

      As soon as i heard that OOC exists i read about it and migrated over here and left HearthPWN behind - and so far this decision was the right one!

      The Team behind OOC is awesome and very fast regarding Hearthstone News and Infos! KEEP ON ROCKING GUYS !!!! 

       

  • I think the community here is amazing with the team who are down to earth and truly passionate in what they do. I also love the style of articles in the front page. You can feel the effort Flux and the team have been putting into them.

  • Out of Cards is amazing, I love it here. As others noted above, this is a very active and positive community. I made a thread a few days ago looking for advice on getting my decks noticed, and not only did I get a bunch of really helpful tips, but someone went and upvoted all my decks. Also, I now have 2 decks featured on the main page. I enjoy this site almost as much as I enjoy playing Hearthstone (ok, a bit of an exaggeration).

  • This community mostly seems good.  I'm hoping it's able to maintain how it feels right now when or if it gets much bigger.  I do like that this site isn't tied exclusively to Hearthstone.

  • Most of the core community moved to OOC when the admins changed.  A number of people stayed on HP because they didn't like how OOC looked (still the deal breaker I hear from many HP-only users.  Please do light mode soon so we can grab them!), but I suspect the majority of people stayed simply did so because they don't use the forums enough to even know what was happening between the two sites at all.  Generally speaking, people who don't use forums often are more likely to lack forums etiquette and thus make shitposts and other less than constructive posts more often

    It might also be a matter of passion.  People who are passionate and positive about the game are more likely to make constructive and positive posts.  Sharing good posts and posting often makes you more likely to bond with the community.  If you just make garbage posts, the community will react negatively, you will get a negative experience and you obviously won't bond with the people shaming you (you might even hate them).  Anyway, people who were passionate about the community and the admins who held it together were more likely to migrate to OOC

    I was worried at first when I heard HP was staying up, because it means the community here is going to be smaller.  Looking back on it now, maybe it was a blessing in disguise to shed all those problem users.  The entire recent posts page over there is usually user after user complaining about certain decks and raging for more nerfs

  • The community is smaller but what matters is quality and not quantity, I mean yeah you can compmplain the community split but most of it is salty anyway so far most people here are not opening a nerf thread every 2.5 minutes like in HPWN and complaining about every single deck, I open this site a lot, still go to hpwn from time to time (didn't comment since the "shutdown" and although there is more discussion there I don't feel like it's a good discussion, just need more people to be active and start opening interesting threads I think that once the custom HS contests will start this site will start to see some serious activity.

  • Personally I have still used HearthPwn on occasion, but mostly I'm only on OoC for Hearthstone news, forums, and recent user decks.  I also get on HS Replay for deck stats, etc.  Mostly when I've used HP since the split was a momentary bit of downtime at OoC during card reveals, and if I'm looking for inspiration for a Wild deck.  Given how new OoC is they don't have the deck data base that goes back to 2014.  But if I need some inspiration I can pull up an old deck similar to what I'm thinking of making, maybe get reminded of some old card I haven't seen in a while.  Which is why I loved the recent article about "Forgotten Wilds" on OoC!  As well as OoC's attention to Wild and featured Wild Weekend decks.

    Truly, OoC is already a better site than HP ever was!  Keep it up, guys!

  • In my opinion, Quantity only works for evaluating decks' playrates and winrates. Hsreplay.net was already doing that before OOC/Hearthpwn split. I don't think that forums are used by consumers for searching good and impactful decks. Deck database of forums are for people who searchs interesting or fun decks. The quantity difference between hearthpwn and OOC only effects those in my opinion.

    And also, Forums are meant to be places for discussions. I don't like how community turned the Hearthpwn's forums into netdecking garbage which has not been happen here yet and I afraid it will change as soon as we will have more users here.

    I mean, ok, I also want to see more support for this site from Hearthstone players but I also afraid that the Quantity will corrupt the core of the site. They will bring their funny and interesting ideas but they will bring also their salt, ridiculous elitist thoughts and stuff like those.

    I always prefer less people with more quality than more people will less quality. There is a proverb, you know; Too many cooks spoil the stew.

  • Hearthpwn is the worst existing HS site I've ever seen.
    Ugly, old and mobile unfriendly.

  • No ads here alone make this site much better for me. Hearthpwn is almost unusable on mobile with the amount of ads and redirect attempts it throws at me.

  • HearthPwn was the first and biggest, so it gathered so many players that inevitably interesting content has watered down submerged by same old rant/salty topics about nerfing this and how much OP that is. Also many people just goes there to simply search for a decklist and never contribute to the community, leaving it to stale around. On top of that it is overwhelmed by ads, making it a real pain to use on mobile (and sometimes even on PC).

    OoC has learned from HearthPwn's experience and has become better under every single aspect, while keeping improving with each new update thanks to all the efforts and dedications of the Staff. We may experience some degree of "degradation" when the community will blow up in numbers during time but the basic of OoC seems so much solid that all that low level content will be contained or driven away.

  • OoC is superior. I moved here and look back maybe once a month. The mobile version had also been a big surprise. It´s extremly good. But yes it´s bad that there are two sites and the community split.

  • OOC is better in every aspect, socially, and technically (FAR superior), and it's bound to improve with time. As opposed to Hpwn, which I expect to stay in uncertain waters for the time being.

    Lazy website dwellers will probably stay at Hpwn, and that's just good for us here.

    Dedicated contributors will eventually join here, it's just a matter of time.

    So yeah, the community may be split, but we actually have the selection of the good portion. :p

     

  • Before the split everything was fine for us, the forum members. Sometimes, browsing Hearthpwn or Out of Cards feels like a trip to a desert...

    A real shame, if you ask me... :(

  • As others before me have already said, OOC is the superior community. OOC is like a distilled version of every Hearthstone forum out there, since most of the great and interesting members from Hearthpwn migrated here. As a result, there are very few salt/whiny threads and more interesting and intelligent discussions, as well as excellent feature articles on the front page, which I think is a paradise for those who love this game (like me). Forum activity could be better, but I have no doubt that will improve over time.

    The worst forum I've ever visited has to be the one on the official Hearthstone website. Nothing but toxic complaints, whining, and "old man yells at cloud" threads. It's a hell filled with jaded, bitter, and angry HS players raging against the small indie company we know and love.

      C'mon dude... "The superior community"? Don't you think that's too much? No offense, but your post sounds pretty arrogant and condescending... No forum community is superior to other, just different. What you could see as interesting and smart, others could see as boring and shallow. Different tastes and personalities create different perspectives, that's all.

      To be honest, from my point of view, most threads and articles here on Out of Cards are extremely boring, with a considerable amount of posts made by people totally afraid of not being accepted by others. Such a thing creates an unnatural and fictional enviroment hard to digest for those of us who usually prefer honesty over false kindness. But that is just my opinion. The fact you seem to enjoy this forum more than me doesn't make it better or worse than the others, just different, as I said previously.

        One is all serious discussions whereas the other is a chaotic, angry mess.  Of course you would like the latter better :P

        I do not think the lack of angry posts here is a product of people being afraid to express their emotions though.  We still have a working salt thread.  It's just that people here know that there's no point in making a thread just to vent about how much they dislike something because there's no actual discussion to be had.  No one ever replies to those with anything meaningful.  Unless you were referring to some other aspect of this community?

        People still get pretty emotional here if you exclude the whole top level rant threads thing.  Case in point, you've still managed to stir up shit just fine. People still get pissed off when I tell them why their theorycraft is not going to be competitive or why their personal experience is bad advice or why Blizzard will never do what they want it to or why their collection management is only good for destroying dust/money.  There are still players who have hate, or at least no empathy for Spikes others who enjoy the game differently than themselves.  It's far less common than it is on HP, but it's there if you look hard enough

  • OOC is better overall and always (so far) has news and updates well before anyone else.

    I also see their twitter posts and facebook posts before anyone else, OOC is very proactive.

    This is important to new (ish) players like me. 

  • I also think activity here is a bit low. Sometimes I enter in the morning and there are only a handful of new threads and replies to old threads than the evening before. So more active users will definitely be welcome.

    Besides what others have already said, I think OOC has not yet attracted the attention of new users because it's not so easy to find in Google when searching for Hearthstone-related keywords. Time (as it's a new site) and some keyword research and SEO work will fix it, improving SEO is probably somewhere in the LOOOONG list of pending tasks of Flux and the rest of the team.
