In case you missed it, there has been a LOT of Runeterra information flying around recently, mostly due to the announcement of the start of open beta on January 24th! I'll catch you up on everything you might have missed throughout the week.
Moonstruck Poro will be your buddy if you play in the open beta.
Open Beta Announcement
- Sunday, January 19, before midnight is the last chance to register to get access a day early (on Thursday, January 23).
- Open beta for everyone starts Friday, January 24.
- Ranked play begins with beta.
- Open beta participants get Moonstruck Poro Guardian later in the year.
- No more resets.
Changes to Cards
- Players spotted changes to Anivia during the beta announcement video.
- Patch notes will be available next Wednesday on January 22 and we'll discover all the changes.
- Anivia costs 7 mana now and has the "Can't Block" restriction removed. (Thanks to Freforos for the correction)
- Anivia transforms when you become Enlightened (Activates only when you reach 10 max mana). It's the same condition required for Karma to level up. (Thanks to GerritDeMan for the correction)
- I'm not sure how the card stats changed since they were already buffed/debuffed in the video.
New Regions
- Multiple sets will release this year and each will add a new region.
- When a new set drops they will also add new Champions to existing regions.
- A good place to get familiar with Runeterra regions is the Universe page from League of Legends.
- I completed an entire series on the existing regions so you can read the highlights below.

After analyzing the XP and purchasable wildcards I would recommend that you remove the starter bundle and wildcards from the store completely :) Go for the same model as TFT :) There is nothing wrong with a limited card meta especially when you can mix with another region, each week will only add more to the pool, and deviate as we choose our region. Draft rewards won't really have the same impact as purchase as you don't get to choose the card, therefore, a keeper.
I also recommend catchup XP and rewards for players starting later into the season.
Like in World of Warcraft ^^ As time goes it gets easier to farm as everyone else gets closer to reach maximum gear and artifact lv :) No need for buying wildcards! ^^
Btw, Anivia is 2/5 if i remember correct.
It was like that in one of swim's video so I remember from there.
Wait.. the game won't be available to Mac OS, ever? Feelsbadman.
I can feel your pain. But the fault is apple's. Last macbook I bought, damn them and the wars with developers and nvidia :(
So do people who was in the closed beta need to register for the open beta as well? Or do they get access the 23rd automatically?
If you participated in the preview patches, then you will automatically have access a day early on the 23rd. As long as any new account is registered before the 20th it will get this same early access. Regardless, everyone will be able to access the game when open beta starts on the 24th.
Thank you for the answer. I loved the game so much when I played in the preview patch and I can't wait to play it again. Getting to play it even just 1 day earlier is awesome.
There is a mistake, Anivia will evolve now only when you are enlightened.
Also now she can block
Thanks for catching that!
"Anivia cost increased to 7 and when it transforms you become Enlightened (get boosted to 10 mana)."
I don't think you worded this correctly. You don't become enlightened when Anivia transforms, it's the reverse: Anivia transforms when you become enlightened. It's the same condition required for Karma to level up.
Flavor wise, thats kinda off for Anivia, isnt it? 🤔
Yeah, the level up requirement of dying, becoming Eggnivia, and resurrecting again certainly felt much more flavorful. It is a bit of a shame but I guess this was a case where balance was prioritized over flavor, which I can certainly understand.
On the other hand, Anivia being almost exclusively an offensive card always felt off since she is supposed to be like a protector of Freljord (at least as far as I know, I'm certainly not an expert when it comes to Runeterra lore). Her now being able to block feels more appropriate where that is concerned, and based on the stats that are visible here they might have reduced her attack (since the attack values shown are apparently buffed stats) and my guess is that means that they increased her health which can also be useful for blocking.
While I agree, I feel the old design was rather clunky. Freljord had neither significant self-damaging effects nor any real reason to cross-region with other regions with those effects; combined with the 'cannot block' that ensured Anivia would basically never level up since your opponent simply wouldn't block her unless they could deal with the egg (and she was WAY too stat-inefficient to be worth saying 'yay, free face damage').
The new design is a little less flavourful, but I suppose you could argue it's simply moving the Enlightened keyword away from being potentially seen as Ionian-specific. That's probably a good thing going forward.
Yep, I messed it up. Thanks for the correction and keeping me honest! =)
No problem! And thanks for the mention in the original post haha
