This is the same video they gave us for the announcement of the next expansion, but this time it's got a cool music track instead of dialogue.

Hearthstone is far superior in gameplay and simplicity. However, I don't think it could beat LoR's reward system (for now, at least). LoR rewards very generous and it's very addictive.
I've played Runeterra for only three days now, and I am already capable of net-decking(I know) an almost complete(only 1-champion missing) S-Tier Control(Corrina) deck and an almost complete budget Discard Deck. I can't blame anyone who'd make the switch.
I wish Achievements would come sooner for Hearthstone. There just isn't much incentive playing more than completing quests and grinding ladder. While in Runeterra, you could play every day without running out of stuff to strive towards.
Hearthstone game state is in such a strange place. You are mostly focused on swing turns rather than interacting with the board, its almost like if you cant answer a treat from a Evolve Shaman or Spell Druid you are dead. There is so much mana cheating in the game right now it's crazy. I left HS for Magic about a 1.5 years ago and have really enjoyed it.
You actually also see all the mana cheating in Magic Arena atm with Bant and Fire decks. Magic is a very complex and rewarding game, however current games really come down to who draws 3eferi, mystical dispute, spiral growth, uro, ECD. They need to create more space for mid-range decks to play the mutate concept.
I started playing Runeterra a week ago and have been grinding with Elusive deck F2P. I really enjoy all the board interactions that can take place. When to trade, when you play cards, when to hold mana and when to rally. The challenger/rally concept are my favorite mechanics.
I think right now I play a mix of all three games.
Grind Runeterra into some Magic historic events and then splash some Battlegrounds.
Pretty rad animation, but doesn’t do much to sell the game.
The game itself has a somewhat polished look and feel (when opening packs, some of the rightmost card is clipped off the edge of the screen on an iPad Pro - doesn’t feel especially professional), but I don’t think I really like it. I bought the starter pack, but have no idea what I got in there. It just sort of said, “You got it”. I mean, what did I get? I get a dang light show every time I open a crappy free reward pack, but I spend $5 and...nothing? Weird.
As for the gameplay, it seems needlessly over-complicated to try to be like Magic with all of the instant effects and back and forth - and for its part, it handles this well without much clutter, but Hearthstone showed us we didn’t need all that, and this definitely feels like a step backwards. Also, I just don’t care about any of the characters. I wasn’t a WoW fan before Hearthstone, but I instantly fell in love with the cute menagerie. LoR is trying to score some Murloc points with their Pomos or Pokos or whatever, but it just doesn’t work. And - this may sound weird - but I feel like the inclusion of the MtG blocking mechanic actually REDUCES the strategy element. I mean, there should be a lot of decisions to make with instants in hand and whatnot, but something about how quickl the games play out means that all of that imagined interaction just doesn’t materialize in most games - not like it did back in my Magic days. Sorry, Riot, Hearthstone just beats this hands-down.
I'm glad we have lots of options other than only Hearthstone. The biggest difference, and game changer for me, is the generosity of Legends of Runeterra. It is so much easier to get the cards you want to be able to play with in Runeterra than you could ever hope for in Hearthstone.
I actually think that HS finally found a worthy opponent (pun intended).
I downloaded LoR two days ago to take a break from the Demon Hunter bullshit happening in HS right now and I've been intrigued pretty much immediately.
The game play is very different (I would say way more strategic), RNG is way less relevant and visually the game kicks ass. One of the thing I liked the most is the possibility to look at the full HD artworks of the cards. They are absolutely gorgeous.
The freebies are really a lot, and the game is really intuitive. I went 7-0 in my very first expedition attempt. Then a 5 wins.
I do agree tho on the disappointment for the starter bundle. Was expecting some flashy animation, instead nothing :(
I’m stumped on the whole freebies thing. In one sense it seems great to get a bunch of free cards, but in another sense it makes the perceived value of all the cards much lower. I’m looking at the Champions (legendaries?), and I have so many already, so the ones that I don’t have don’t really seem super desirable. Couple that with the fact that I have no idea what I even got in the one purchase I made, and I feel like the whole thing borders on most people just going with a F2P approach. Maybe that’s nice for aspiring communists, but what it means for the game is probably that it won’t end up going the distance.
I come from decades of playing Magic where you pay for the game you play. I like paying for a good game, so I don’t mind buying both bundles when a new expansion drops in HS - in fact, I look forward to it! All of this freebie stuff, plus the clutter of the collection manager make this game feel cheap, despite the fact that some of the graphics are flashy.
Also, there are way too many keywords. The cards look kind of messy with all of that, and deck building strategy is more needlessly complicated than it needs to be as a result. I do like the full artworks, though. That’s kind of cool, but it also illustrates just how little is actually shown on the card
I'm sure some people are still paying money to get cards faster, as well as to get some of the cosmetic things. I don't really play it but I believe League of Legends' main source of income is cosmetic items and it's been doing just fine for many years now.
Yes, its based on cosmetics.
They announced that they will not introduce card packs. If you are dedicated to a certain play style you can climb to masters with a f2p.
"Aspiring Communists" is where you lost me.
We’ll see if the massive freebies last, or if the game does.
Cosmetic items are great for some games, but card games typically sell the cards as the primary profit driver.
Time will tell.
This is an awesome work of Art!!! Kudos to them! (who's the badass villain btw?)
I'm still very doubtful to try the game though... Already playing both MTGA/HS and still enjoying those.
Well, if you like HS and MTGA, you should really try. It takes things that are great from both games and add a way better F2P aspect to it. Played MTG (tabletop) for 2 years and HS for 3 years, but LOR is now my go-to card game.
The shadow-assassin is Zed, and the guy wielding the big axe is Darius (who is not above villainous behavior himself). Zed comes from Ionia while Darius comes from Noxus, two regions of Runeterra (which function to partition the game, like Magic's colors or Hearthstone's classes). The battle at the end appears to be an Ionia + Shadow Isles deck versus a Noxus + Demacia one.
It's definitely hard to juggle multiple card games, but I would suggest giving it a shot anyway if you're up to it :D They're handing out freebies to get people started, and there's bonus XP for leveling up certain regions to get you going even faster.
Preeeeetty good!
