I'm not sure Haleh is really a control card, but let's assume it is for the sake of argument: While it is true they have willingly printed cards, and those cards have led to a hostile environment for control decks, that doesn't mean the devs planned to completely abandon slow decks for the rest of time. Cards for slow decks need to continue to be printed if they are ever going to return to relevance, else there's no basis for them when the meta becomes less hostile. Not printing them would be an open admission to the players that there will never be slow decks again, and all the players who most enjoy those decks will leave.
In a much broader picture, they need to keep printing cards for all types of players if they want to keep them around, and they need to cover all the game modes too. Even Tavern Brawl occasionally makes complete dud cards shine, while things just being in pools for card generation can matter even when nobody actually puts the card in their deck. In Haleh's case, they clearly want big spell mage to function, and that in turn wants Drakefire Amulet to be good, which can ultimately make Haleh relevant no matter how awkward she is to run naturally.
Why do they even print these cards? Don't these "designers" know that they previously accelerated the game and basically eliminated the "control" archetype, willingly?!
Why even bother to print 8 mana cards?! Sure, if by some huge luck you can keep some 0-1 mana spells in hand, AND reach turn 8, you may use this to try and come back. Most likely you've already used all spells to survive until then.
I just don't understand where these people come up with these ideas from, completely opposite from what they did before and thinking it'll be used in a meaningful way...
Super good reload for hunters. The #1 deck that will LOVE this card is Defend the Dwarven District, because that deck almost always has 1 maybe 2 cards in their hand. They really run out of cards a lot and Furious Howl fixes that. However Furious Howl will be good for any FACE hunter deck pre and post rotation, as it encourages aggro hunters to play a lot of "hand vomit" kind of playstyle. (Even worse than now..) Honestly i wouldn't be surprised if this gets nerfed to 3 mana, (Which would be bad for Wild... Cuz ODD Cost.) just like Voracious Reader did. After all Furious Howl often acts just like a pre-nerf Voracious Reader but it's basically at command instead of end of turn.
And in Wild this will 100% see play in Defend the Dwarven Districts that are not ODD costed. Also Spell Hunter will finally have some better draw, Rhok'delar finally gets more support!
Pre-rotation amazing because of Trampling Rhino, but once it rotates it's going to struggle a bit more.
Post-rotation we do have some synergy with cards like Vanndar Stormpike, because it can pull cards that have their cost reduced. (Yes, because Guardian Animals also works like that.) So i expect that they might push Big (secret) Hunter a bit more. That deck was actually really good during the first weeks of the expansion, until The Demon Seedlock and pirate warrior ran all over it. Also maybe this sees play in a post-rotation aggro hunter deck, because it's a better tempo option than Guardian Animals. Of course it will still need some good beasts to cheat out, because i don't see aggro hunter play Imported Tarantula unless its a heavy control meta.
Wild: Probably doesn't see play. Reno Hunter proably doesn't want it, and Dwarven district doesn't run minions unless they can discover something.
Really bad card if your opponent plays around it, however this might be THE card Defend the Dwarven District needed to become viable in standard. And if it becomes viable... oh boy... Standard players beware, for us wild players know very well how bad it feels to play against a Defend the Dwarven District deck. Luckely Dragonbane Shot is 2 mana, which means it might now speed the deck up in standard too much, which means you hopefully can Mutanus the Devourer their quest reward.
And in wild thank YOGG it's EVEN costed, i think all of us wild players (Except the Defend the Dwarven District players) can agree that we don't want to see that deck return to the same powerlevel as before.
Wow this an amazign and flavor filled card! And i love the artwork as well!
Pre-rotation i think it probably doesn't see play. Even though the discover pool won't change much pre- and post rotation.
Post-rotation i think this will see play in some kind of control/ramp druid deck, as some kind of value generator. You can get a Nourish or Boomkin with both effects combined, or worst case scenario a 3/2 treant that gives all your minions +1 (Sow the Soil or a 1 mana 3/3 with rush and taunt (Druid of the Reef) Actually there is 1 bad option in standard rn, and it's Runic Carvings which rotates. Okay maybe Ancient of War is also bad, but not really in a control/slower deck. Also considering you discover a option, you will have a lot of control over what you will get.
Wild: I don't think it sees play, just because the choose one pool is so big. The chance to lowroll might be too high.
Hmm interesting minion. Druid does have a lot of ways to combine the choose one effect, or split them in standard now and post rotation.
I think that pre-rotation it wont see much play, unless it's discovered.
Post rotation i think it might see play in ramp/control-ish druid decks. It's removal, which druid often has problems with and Lunar Eclipse is rotating. And it can be healing, which druid will need because cards like Cenarion Ward are rotating. I think Boomkin has a lot of potential in the next HS year.
Wild: This might slot into the Uldum quest Druid, because that deck often completes their quest after turn 4-5 which means you can play it with the combined effect probably on curve.
Certainly a must-include in questline DH, AND probably good in a lot of other DH decks. DH is losing some BIG draw cards with the rotation, such as: Skull of Gul'dan, Acrobatics and debatably Glide. Most remaining card draw options for DH draw 1-2 cards, with Need for Greed being the only card that draws more than 2 cards, so having Razorglaive Sentinel after rotation will be quite usefull for DH. You can draw a bunch instantly, which is easy if you have some discounts from questline, and if it survives a turn you can draw a bunch more cards. (Feast of Souls CAN also draws more than 3 cards, but requires you killing off your own tokens. It's a lot less reliable than other card draw.)
Honestly i'm glad to see that a bunch of card draw is being printed on minions again, it makes the game more interactive and you can actually feel like your stopping your opponent from gaining recources (In this case cards). I really hope they continue going this direction!
Good rank 1, but the rank 2/3 are kinda bad. Just getting 1 more token with each rank up is pretty bad. Also i think the felwings are just 1/1s without any effect. Still i think Token DH will certainly use it, as they love any kind of token generation. And tokens are always kinda scary if your opponent played Kurtrus, Demon-Render.
Decent replacement for Immolation Aura, but still dealing 1 less dmg on a board clear i going to hurt. However you can use this to turn your tokens into instant damage, so that's something. I think this will see some experimentation at the very least.
You can cheat it out with Shadow Hunter Vol'jin pre- and post rotation, so OTK mage can survive the rotation as long as it gets new mana cheat. (Pls no) Pre rotation i feel like its just a worse Mozaki, Master Duelist, but post rotation it can really pop off which i sincerely hope it does not. Even as a OTK kinda card, i feel like mage questline + Ignite will just do the same thing, but faster after rotation...
However there is always the chance they DON'T print any OTK support for it, and instead try to make players use Haleh, Matron Protectorate as some kind of late game control tool, kinda like how priest got Mi'da, Pure Light. (Which is how i hope Haleh, Matron Protectorate will see play.)
One thing to note however is that you can discover these from Drakefire Amulet, and after rotation i feel like you probably have a pretty big chance of discovering Haleh, Matron Protectorate from it. So that's something we should keep in mind.
In wild it just seems bad, Mozaki, Master Duelist and Flamewaker do it's job better. AND on top of that, with Sorcerer's Apprentice being nuked, you need way more mana cost reductions in order to do a Haleh, Matron Protectorate OTK. Sure there is Frizz Kindleroost, but even then you have to draw/play frizz before drawing Haleh AND have 10 mana so you can play sorcerer's. (Or 8 mana after a additional Emperor tick) Or you have to discount it to 1 using Luna's Pocket Galaxy, which yet again relies on you not drawing Haleh...
Its a card you play because you want to play this, not because its inherently good on its own. Mozaki, Master Duelist does the job a 100 times better and with Cram Session, it can even reload out of a small hand so you're not altogether screwed based on your hand size.
This card however, is 100% setup or die. Basically it has about as much chance to live a turn as an ice cube down a hot pavement, so when this is out you're either swinging board or outright winning. Not exactly impossible to accomplish, but often enough mage has plenty other stuff that accomplishes the same thing with more consistency.
Dont even bother talking about wild. In what world is this ever going to compare favorably with Flamewaker?
Well, that's our payoff for Drakefire Amulet. Just discount that amulet, summon two of these and play a bunch of 0 mana spells and completely turn the tide.
Or you can just setup everything the same way and win with mozaki instead. Several turns earlier too I may add.
Oh well. But hey, at least it has 12 health so its not 100% certain that it'll be removed the next turn. Just 90% certain.
You know what, I like it. Sure, it's basically just a worse Mozaki and I sincerely doubt that it's going to be anywhere close to playable especially after Flow and Biscuit rotates but come on...it looks like an absolute blast to meme with. Just play some Spell Mage with lots of draw and spell generaation, try to get Siphon Mana off and then use this to just go ham in the lategame.

The art's cool, but I can't help but feel a little put off by it. I guess I got used to hearthstone's more modern cartoony artstyle.

Extra bad after the Sorcerer's Apprentice nerf.
