Geddon + Diablo is a pretty strong combo. Turn 1 Heating up + Doom charge into turn 2 Living bomb (with the equipment that doubles the effect) + Fire stomp deals 32 aoe damage repeatedly for every opponent that hasnt acted yet at speed 3. And thats just 2 mercs, you can use Antonidas and his Fireball storm for omega damage against bosses or a good protector/disruptor like Cairne to keep your opponents slower.
There is another, maybe even better combo with Ragnaros (+3 fire damage equip) + Geddon (Living bomb doubling equip) + Antonidas (+5 to Flamestrike equip). Geddon casts Living bomb at speed 5 on the middle opponent, then Antonidas casts Flamestrike for 14+5+3 and activating Living bomb for (12+3)x2 then Ragnaros casts Die Insects! at speed 10 for 22+3 repeated damage. Not counting the occasional lucky Rag hits to the center opponent, this combo will deal 77 aoe damage to a party of 3. In terms of "speed" its not fastest, but its on turn 1. It can be countered by summons, heals and buffs, but in general it seems like its enough to wipe out any party of 3 in PVP.
Hey OoC community! I have been lurking around this site for a while, but never made an account here until now. My username could be familiar from Hearthpwn, but on that site I cant have a detailed conversation about mercenaries without dropping a ton of links to OoC. Im very interested in the new game mode and I want to discuss strategies, and honestly the community here seems much better than on that other site.
Welcome :D Seeing new accounts is always a good thing...unless you count the occasional bot...or spammer...or jerk. But let's not think about those lol

On topic:
As others have said, Sylvanas is best for PVP, but she is not very good in PVE.
About TLK vs. Diablo I disagree with Trump. Both are very good starting heroes but when it comes to endgame, Diablo seems a lot better. I just dont see TLK as an essential part of any endgame build. IMO Diablo is the 6th best in slot merc for a demon comp with Jaraxxus, Tamsin, Rathorian, Mannoroth and Gul'dan, and it seems a very strong synergistic endgame strategy to me. But wait, there is more!
Imagine Diablo in a fire comp, especially with Baron Geddon. First turn Geddon can use Heating up to deal some damage and make fire abilities faster next turn while Diablo can use Doom charge to make someone slower. Turn 2 Geddon uses Living bomb (with Burning Bracers to double the effect) at speed 2, then Diablo can use Fire stomp at speed 3 to deal 8+12+12=32 damage to all enemies, repeating for every opponent who hasnt acted yet. At speed 3!!! And thats just a 2 merc combo, you can add Ragnaros with his +fire damage equipment, Antonidas with Fireball storm for bosses, or just a good disruptor like Cairne.
I dont see any crazy combos like this with TLK, so I think Diablo is the winner.
This is a terrible deck. Countered not only by mage but with Libram Paladin and extremely aggro decks which is what the majority of players on ladder are playing. Hard pass
I actually agree with a lot of what you said. I didn't realize it at first, but you're right. Why are we punished for managing healers properly? The run should just "end" if you die, not go "ok you revived, j/k!" and reduce your score. Battles do feel random. I don't necessarily mind the randomness of the cards offered though. (I think it helps people realize different unique combos that they wouldn't experiment with otherwise) and it does allow more than 2 regions (which is fun to have like 4 different champions and regions working together).
I concede many of them are exaggerations or fantasies, but that doesn't mean they don't exist in some capacity (even if it's intangible) or aren't relatable. Poppy's demonstrates it most clearly to me: kid gets bullied for being short - that absolutely happens. Kid also imagines a universe in which they could beat the sh*t out of the bullies. Anime makes up the world where they can actually do that, but not the idea itself.
Now I look at them, that does seem to be what happens when each of them levels up: they fulfill some fantasy associated with their first stage.
Ezreal is showing off some new toy, then imagining it doing something wholly unrealistic. Perhaps the real-world version would be a Megaman or Samus arm-cannon toy, which I presume exist.
Poppy, see above.
Caitlyn overhears a snub / someone bitching about her, and imagines acing a test and embarrassing the other person. In any case the two clearly don't get along and there is some rivalry there because of it.
Leona is a quiet kid forced to be in a noisy environment that she hates, and imagines screaming "shut the f*ck up!" in an intimidating enough way to actually make it happen.
By golly do I relate to that...
Kat is one of the class rebels, possibly with an unhealthy home environment and an obsession with knives, who imagines herself as the assassin(?) she is in LoL.
Lux... I honestly don't know what her deal is. Is she meant to be a hall monitor breaking up a fight? UK schools don't have hall monitors so that one is unfamiliar to me.
Sure, it's all covered with tropes (not just anime mind you) and set in a fantasy world where the line between childhood imagination and reality is blurred, but beneath all of that is a nugget of reality.
Just one question about the Flavour of the Brewfest !
The Flavour should be something for a Party (like getting or giving Gifts and Drinks) , getting Drunk (starting fights or do something stupid) etc ?
is that correct? just wanted to know before i try to make a card :)
Yeah that's about right. Brewfest's real-world equivalent is Oktoberfest, the annual German folk festival. People associate with it drinking, eating, drinking, dressing up all folksy, and drinking.
The Lich King - generally good unit that can fit into many comps
Diablo - niche usage for a fire/deamon comp
I'm coming around to this line of thinking.
Shadow comps with Vol'jin seem very strong for PvP, and Sylvanas can inflict Shadow damage with Banshee Bolt. Her one Deathrattle Equipment could wipe out an entire enemy team if planned correctly. She can also go hard on the Reclaimed Souls buff with someone like Samuro feeding her "dead" characters. In PvE she won't be nearly as good, though, so take that into consideration.
The Lich King is just good all around. Frostbite starts at a 9 but eventually becomes a 5-Speed, while the permanent slow effect increases. Death Coil has a lot of targetable damage for a Protector, it can heal, and it's Shadow. And of course Frostshield is just nuts against attackers. You can slot him into many teams.
I like Diablo a lot, especially if you pair him with TLK or Cairne for a "perma-slow" team. Slow everyone down with Frostbite, then slam them hard with Fire Stomp. The Demons are iffy - he doesn't bring much to the table for the group - but he could see use on a Fire comp. Diablo is just...not as good as the other two.
I bought both Diablo and TLK, but if I was only going to choose one based on their expected viability, it would definitely be The Lich King. He is the most well-rounded in regards to his usefulness, both in PvE and PvP.
On paper, Saltwater Scourge is everything I would have asked for (except for more variety in bosses and characters). I was surprised that I didn’t get into it.
I think these might be the problems, starting with the most important:
The deck-building choices don’t feel interesting. I’m not sure why, but at the end of classic Lab of Legends, I have a super-powered deck with a coherent strategy, and at the end of Saltwater Scourge I have a mish-mash of unrelated cards.
The economy and special encounters are pointless. I don’t want most of the cards offered, so I never need to think about how much gold I have.
I don’t like the final scoring. It encourages me to watch the clock, and to feel bad if I use healing. Managing healing should be part of the game, not something I have to avoid, and a time limit shouldn’t be part of it at all. Other than tracking your deaths, the factors in your score should be achievements rather than the main focus.
Battles feel much more random than in traditional Lab of Legends. I think it’s a mix of my less-developed deck and the high-roll nature of the enemies’ powers. Whatever the reason, I can get overwhelmed in a battle, resurrect, and then win the battle with no problem on my next try. A roguelike CCG should be random, but not that arbitrary.
(Of course, these are all my opinions and I have no problem with the fact that other people enjoy the mode.)
DreamQuest is one of my all-time favorite games, and I hope that Riot can make something similar. I feel like it’s so close, but everything is mixed together slightly wrong.
I guess a large part of why there is such broad appeal for this sort of thing, even outside Asia, is that school is the one thing (nearly) everyone can relate to. Schools vary, as do uniforms, but many of the things you see happen are more or less universal.
Behind the magic, weapons, and anime tropes there are people we recognise in settings we recognise reacting in ways we recognise. I don't even play LoR or LoL, so I barely know the characters themselves, but I do know the people they are representing. For example, I never actually saw a food fight at school, but I certainly saw people (myself included) try to handle noisy, chaotic environments the same way Leona is depicted here.
In contrast, my ability to relate to yet another image of a badass caught in the middle of some badassery is limited. Yeah they look cool, but that's as deep as the attachment goes.
I understand you're trying to take a neutral stance here, and I appreciate it. But I went through school, including college. I've seen my daughter go through school so far (heading into middle school next year). And I've never seen anything like what these things are depicting (including running out the door with food in your mouth??)
These are not school based references with an anime flair to them. They are anime based tropes, in a school environment. And there is a distinct difference between those two varying scenarios.
Which is why I said....I know that the skin event is for the Asian audience? I said that in addition to their world demographic and core audience in Asia, it felt odd to create an event of that sort.
Let me put it another way. You never see "German Stereotypes" skin event. I mean apart from a super early Gragas skin, they never did a "German beerfest" skin event like this ever to my knowledge.
References to cultures is fine, but instead of being diverse, it just seems like it's always anime tropes. That's what annoys me. Game developers continually pander to specifically the anime subculture (which is based on Asian stereotypes in the first place) and then generally never do any other subcultures.
Why would the anime fans complain about a non-anime event? So once again I'll point out: Anime Tropes event is biased in that it perpetuates both anime and asian stereotypes.
Dark Star and Harrowing don't perpetuate either of those stereotypes because they aren't based out of a culture, they are based on a thematic expansion/alternate universe to an existing story.
If game developers (like Riot) released various culture based events that would be fine; however if you want proof that a game can do multi-culture based events themed around things in real life look no further: Heroes of the Storm
And of course the plethora of alternate universe, themed references, holiday events, cross-IP themes, etc that all games generally try to push.
Point is, HOTS was able to incorporate not only the asian mechwarrior theme, but 2 other subcultures into their game just fine (Central/Latin america, as well as western europe). Point is, LoL/LoR don't generally push any other culture based events from what I've seen. And to be honest, it gets annoying/tiresome seeing the same old tropes pushed over and over again.
So before you come to someone and say "YoU dO rEaLiZe ThAt LoR iSn't A gAmE mAdE sOlElY fOr AmErIcAnS rIgHt?" perhaps you should read further.
Trump actually belives that Sylvanas is the strongest out of the 3 pre-order mercs. The general thoughts on the bundles accoarding to the Discord channel are:
Sylvanas - strong for pvp
The Lich King - generally good unit that can fit into many comps
Even tough im not that familiar with the new Mercenaries mode (at least now - will defenitely try it out at release) i just looked up Lich King and Diablo and my personal preference would be Diablo.
You do realize that LoR isn't a game made solely for Americans right?
LoR is played by people from every country on the planet and anime isn't exactly a niche thing any more, especially not if you look at it from a global perspective.
Besides, I bet you didn't hear the "weeaboos" complain when the harrowing and dark star skin were released, so why do you feel the need to do it now? Not every single event can be tailored to you specific tastes. Just let people have their skins and maybe the next event will be more to your liking.
ultrarotom suggests to pick Golden Kobold in case you get Disks of Legend: while we haven't tried it ourselves, we can definitely see why!
Yes I can confirm, 2 6/6 taunts on turn 3 is bonkers, and the resulting hand of legendary minions for following turns just wins games on the spot. I got 2 Kobolds in my last warrior run and got 12 wins. Thanks to Avalon for the deck as well 😁
There's also the question of synergies. Maybe there are more demons that buff demons than humans that buff humans.
Also Diablo's AOE might scale well due to the added damage being applied to all three enemies.
Apocalypse... The more I think about it the more it seems really key. The double damage from crits is probably more than most abilites can provide. So this might be one of the best damage options for focusing one guy down.
So he's got an AOE that can take down a guy that's one shot while still damaging others and he's got a premium focus fire ability.
Im pretty sure the viability of either is determined by their partners, and then determined by the matchups because lich king is a protector and diablo's a fighter.
If you already have a line up in mind, it might help in choosing because we don't actually know what to expect given that its a new game, and it might not do to have two of the same typing in the same lineup, at least not until we have hands on experience to back it up.
But if you ask for my opinion it might be prudent to go with diablo because initiative or speed is usually the most important aspect in a turn base game. Lich king's attack will often come out last it would seem.
I caved into peer pressure and decided to pre-order. I have not seen any gameplay, and have only read how the game works. I decided to pick up the Diablo bundle over the Lich King bundle because I like aggressive playstyles and aggro strategies tend to be good in new metas.
Which one do you think is better? I need to make a decision pronto. I have an idea of how the mode works from Trump's videos. (Gameplay looks amazing BTW though I'm bummed that there doesn't seem to be any RPG aspect to it.)
The Lich King looks better to me...maybe? His Frost Shield seems amazing. Taunt and freeze. Whoever hits him has to skip a round (of attacking). That could be their whole team! But you have to wait till turn 3 to use it. Death Coil has great flexibility: damage or heal. Frostbite makes an ability permanently slower (though its speed is 9).
Diablo's abilities are faster on average (all 6 speed which is cute) but maybe weaker? Apocalypse could be really, really good but hard to tell right now. Taking critical damage from all types could add up to a lot. Doom Charge also slows enemy abilities but only for one round, but it's 3 faster than Frostbite. Fire Stomp is AOE so kinda strong, especially against slow enemies since it will repeat for each enemy that hasn't acted. Only 2 damage though.
As for treasures Frostmourne looks very, very good. Looks better than anything Diablo has.
Art-wise....the diamond ones are both great but Diablo's is a bit better. And his two other skins are much better than Lich King's.
I don't know. It's hard to decide not having played the game before. What do you guys think?

Welcome Back Party - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread
Just changed the emblem to DMF to fit with the Fizzy Elemental anyhows feedback.
On another note I kind of wanted to make Theotar since he loves brewfest but there's not really decent art for him as a card
Linkblade: I think it's good has nice flavor however I would never use it since every minion would attack my face
Shaveyou: I like it solid usable card that gives the feeling of the card that gets drawn is walking into a nice cheery bar.
Grumpymonk: I do think warrior would be more fitting also the naming is a bit weird IMO since chug and chuck in WoW invovles well chucking test brews
anchorm4n: Clean and simple looks good
Neoguli: simple little person who dances around the bar mixing drinks as they go clean simple good.
Lundy: I would say pricy and bad but it's drood and infinite 5/5's with taunt so maybe actually OP
R I like it but it does scare me since it's summon instead of play so certain cards could make it go monkey and refill constant mana piles
BIG Warrior [75% WR - Legend]
This is a terrible deck. Countered not only by mage but with Libram Paladin and extremely aggro decks which is what the majority of players on ladder are playing. Hard pass
