Here is an idea I had that can be fun to do if you like a lot of decks but many of them aren't viable in ranked. Take a group of decks according to some theme, a number divisible by 2, so something like 8, 16, 32, or even 64 would work well. Try to not have any deck with overly high power compared to the rest of them, so the result is unpredictable. Then make a tournament bracket (good site I found to do it easily is https://challonge.com/tournament/bracket_generator but can just do it on paper too).
Finally, you can do it with ingame hs friends where for each deck matchup you would do a friend challenge (they can borrow your decks if only one person has them) and play 3 games. You can switch the person playing each deck once too. The deck that wins best out of 3 (or you can set it up to be best out of 1, out of 5, whatever you prefer) moves on to the next round.
You can keep doing this until you get the final winner. For me this type of thing is very enjoyable (the suspense of which deck will move on to the next round and being able to play a huge variety of decks against others of a similar power level and not worry so much about the meta) but I only had the idea to do it yesterday, so I wanted to share the general idea in case anyone wants to try.
Here is an example bracket for the first tournament I'm doing (theme is off meta ones, specifically ones on the weaker side of things and/or very rarely seen).
After that I'm planning to do a tournament of 32 reno decks from all different classes for some kind of ultimate reno deck showdown.

Honestly, it is a shame to see you downvoted because you were totally respectful and mostly objective; as long as people think that the downvote button is a dislike button people will alter their opinions because of it. I feel like the best solution to facilitate conversations that are not being influenced by up/downvotes is to put a disclaimer for downvoting posts like Reddit used to do.

Even if they sucked, when I played Yellow, I would always keep the "big 3" trifecta and Pikachu in my party (Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur) even if by all try-hard accounts most of them were bad (except Squirtles evolved form, Blastoise, which apparently is a half-decent competitive pokemon but I digress). Sometimes aesthetics/fun outweights sweatiness/tryharding :)
For going through the story competitive prowess in Pokemon is pretty meaningless I find. Sure the pseodo-legendaries (Dragonite, Tyranitar, Salamence etc) are always OP, but they also level so slowly that they're not really any better when going through the story, if you can even find them before the Elite 4. Similarly some Pokemon are great competitively but hopeless in the story. E.g. Smeargle and Wobbuffet.
I've used every last non-legendary Pokemon (gens 1-7) up to the Elite 4, and I proudly say I often had the most fun with the weak ones. Luvdisc was a surprise favourite. It's pathetically weak, but fast and troll-y enough that it made a surprisingly good set-up Pokemon in my all water team.
I'll leave my .02 cents and then hope I don't get downvoted like FortyDust did. ( I mean the regulars on the forums who actually post and contribute at this point are known, so it's pretty obvious where the downvotes are coming from...this isn't reddit afterall, we aren't a mega-forum here.)

2) Did many of the people in the thread get off topic with the reward track debate? Absolutely. The point of Forty's original post (as I interpret it) is that cancel-culture/hater-train behavior should not be encouraged. Have none of you ever heard of the old adage "The end justifies the means"?
It's not to be taken literally. It's meant to provoke a thought process that does your behavior (bad) seem justified even if the outcome is good? That is a subjective through process, but many people subscribe to the theory that the ends DO NOT justify the means. (Being an asshole, berative, overly-hostile just to get what you want...regardless if it's from a person or a corporation is not civil behavior in this day and age, but hey that's just my opinoiin)
3) Downvotes are meant to call out caustic/callous behavior that does not contribute to a thread. Downvotes are NOT meant to be a means of "I don't like your opinion and disagree with it." (Unfortunately many many many people do this though.)
4) Content creators may make their livelihood off of the game, but that does not mean that they are bound by morality to disseminate whatever information they post as legitimate. In short: using content creators as an "appeal to authority" that they are the "alpha and omega" of public opinion is extremely naive and short sighted. They are fallible, make mistakes, make assumptions like the rest of us.
To put it another way: Look at content creators like a game's version of news channels. Each content creator has a bias. Is your content creator the "Fox News" (R) , "CNN" (L), or "Rueters" (N) of of that game's content creation?
5) No-one is saying you have to agree with FortyDust. His initial post was probably too tongue in cheek and didn't start the thread off on a good foot, but the rest of his replies were pretty accurate. Don't allow someone's initial impression (however bad it may be) , make you give up your objectivity.

I was going to do this myself, but to be fair to Sykomyke, every Pokemon in the Pewter city gym is ground type, but not all rock. Diglett and Sandshrew were there, at least in the original games. Meanwhile the Viridian gym has a whole load of non-ground types, such as Tauros, Primape and Machoke.

Hey, in Pokemon Blue, I would always spend way more time than necessary in Viridian forest trying to farm that 5% chance of Pikachu showing up. And then subsequently spending time leveling my Pikachu via caterpies and pidgeys. Doesn't matter that Brock was a ground gym that completely countered Pikachu. Are there really Wild Bundles being offered for some people? I always bought Wild Pack Bundles, even the big ones, and only see Golden Standard and Golden Classic Bundle, both Rank 1.
I will probably just try this new game mode a bit (at launch day) to see what it is about personally ONLY because it is in the same client/mobile app.
However, I doubt Mercenaries will be my cup of tea, just like Battlegrounds which is nothing like traditional (collectible) card games. I started playing Hearthstone as it is for me a more accessible alternative to Magic: The Gathering. Duels on the other hand is still very similar to traditional Hearthstone which is probably why I do enjoy that game mode every now and then. There is only so much time to spend in a single day and playing any other game would just take away time from playing traditional Hearthstone.
The fact that Diablo is in Mercenaries is probably the only interesting thing for me. Hopefully, he will join traditional Hearthstone soon™ too.
They buffed 3 Pirate Warrior cards for no reason even though the deck was broken already, and worst of all.. 1-mana 2/2 with a tribe tag and a positive effect? This game is truly finished.

Themed Deck Tournaments (For Fun)
