  • Old Gods, New Tricks - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread

I'm bumping my old card, along with a new iteration of it, since I'm not sure which one I prefer. I think the mechanics fit Priest more, but the flavor isn't good in any case...

(I made the second card before seeing Kansas' card, btw)

    Anyways, feedback time:

    MenacingBagel

    Show Spoiler
This card isn't allowed, since Murlocs is a base tribe.

It's a shame, because the flavor is quite cool.

    DavnanKillder

    Show Spoiler
Forge Elemental is probably my favorite, but the artwork is pretty bad. Besides that, it could use a slight buff (+1 Attack, for instance) and it would be nice if you could connect its flavor to Darkmoon, at least in some slight way.

    Demonxz95

    Show Spoiler
One of the best ideas so far. I think you could make the Corrupted token as well, since finding an evil kitsune art shouldn't be difficult.

Regarding balance, it looks a bit too strong, especially since uncorrupted cards tend to be about the same power level as average Basic cards. I would suggest a 2/4 or a 3/3 statline.

    linkblade91

    Show Spoiler
It's a bit bland for my taste. Its Corrupted form is a bit underwhelming, especially considering how hard it is to corrupt a 9-cost card.

    fungusABao

    Show Spoiler
Not sure if I like it. The base form seems stronger than the Corrupted one, but swaping them doesn't feel right either. I guess you could always make it a 10/10 Taunt with the Corrupted effect being the 7 damage, but that would be too similar to Fizzy Elemental.

    I don't know, I think I'd try a different idea.

    BloodMefist

    Show Spoiler
I personally prefer the first version, but people tend to dislike disruptive effects like this.

The other version is also fine. I think Warlock is the appropriate class for it, especially since multi-corrupt seems to be their thing (Cascading Disaster).

    Arkasaur

    Show Spoiler
My favorite card so far, although it should probably be a bit weaker, since its base form is a better Fire Elemental.

    Neoguli

    Show Spoiler
I agree with other people that it should only count spells, since that would make both forms more balanced.

In terms of flavor, it has the problem that it depecticts a humanoid animal, which are not Beasts (see Worgen Infiltrator or Tuskarr Totemic)

    KANSAS

    Show Spoiler
The first minion needs a tribe tag in order to be allowed.

The second one needs a class, as you pointed out. I agree that Warlock would probably be the best fit. Plus, it should be a Common card, since the effect is very basic.

we missed the mark both in how we communicated and implemented the full functionality of this first version

    Shameful excuse.

"how we communicated"? You didn't. The first we heard of the news was from the survey sent out to random players. If this site hadn't reported on it, it would've disappeared without feedback from the larger community. It's not impossible that they targeted a select group of people with it. The whales, those are the people whose feedback matters to Blizzard. Later, we only got scarce pointers and random screenshots. We did not get anything concrete and calculable, comparable until when the system was launched.

This vague communication cannot be a "we missed the mark". It was deliberate to avoid community-wide feedback (what they are getting now). Imagine Blizzard not making a beta for the next WoW expansion. Imagine them going "oh, we got this cool new raid, find out if it's balanced at all on release day".

Secondly, did Ben just reveal that they knew this system is not final? That they knew this is the "first version"? And thus a second will follow soon after in response to our "wonderful feedback"? They knew what kind of feedback they were getting for this.

    Quote From BigE

$60. It's like a new game every expansion, and new games cost $60. Unless I'm too old and "in my day candy cost a nickle, and we went to school 8 days a week, until they got rid of Redsday because of the war. The important thing to remember is I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time."

I mean we kind of are.  Seriously google "Why do video games still cost 60 dollars?"  You'll find tons of articles explaining that despite inflation from the 90's.

    https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1994?amount=1

What does this mean?  It means that a 60 dollar game from 1994 would actually cost $105 in today's dollars.

Are micro-transactions and some practices by some companies (not just Blizzard) unscrupulous? For sure.   I've played my share of money sink games (Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes I'm looking at you!).

But...gamers are partly to blame.   The gaming community, frankly speaking, is an entitled petulant bunch (as a group).  I'm sure individually people are respectful, but on reddit, in forums, etc.  My interactions I observe don't show that.  Gamers have pushed this 60 dollar price tag for so long that I actually believe that companies, instead of just increasing the base cost by 20 dollars, now just want to nickel and dime us to make up the difference.  I mean, to be fair,  the statistics and research and purchasing patterns have proven that the model works.

There's a lot more going on.  Inflation, wage income gap, job payment systems.  These all indirectly feed into these models that we see today.  Where a 60 dollar game has never increased in price in the last 20+ years, but we still expect the same AAA quality.  So the companies instead use microtransactions and the such to make up the difference.  C'est la vie.

Not going to lie, I'm a pretty casual player and I am actually liking the rewards track now.  I was super skeptical about how it was going to impact my playing because there are classes that I DO NOT like to play at all.  However, in just the past few days I am actually stoked about it and am liking how it will play into this expansion.

  • Blizzard Screwed Up With the Rewards Track - A Letter to Hearthstone

Well said. I'm newish (Jan 2020) to hearthstone, love the game, have found CCGs to be wonderful, and want to continue playing hearthstone as I feel like I missed out over the last few years. This whole rewards track has been a mess from the start, infuriating, but I'm trying to stay positive.

I think RidiculousHat keeps talking about it, but it's time for Hearthstone 2. New client, interface, the works. This whole mess seems like 10lbs of shit in a 5lb bag. But hearthstone isn't shit, so it's like 10lbs of... Not candy, but maybe like mashed potatoes. They're spilling out on the floor and have hairs in them and stuff. Candy is at least in a wrapper, and we could still eat it if it spilled.

Theres a topic for discussion. You're welcome.

  • Hearthstone's Game Director Responds to the Rewards Track

no no no, just changing one reward doesn't fix the problem. now is the time to fix ALL the mistakes blizz did. more xp, more gold, more dusts, lowering pity timers... come on!

  • Blizzard Screwed Up With the Rewards Track - A Letter to Hearthstone

The only thing that really bothers me it's the fact that the "Tavern" pass wasn't included in any of the preorders, and that I really doesn't give you anything at all except some cosmetics and a little xp boost, given the fact that you have to pay a lot to get every pre order, plus the pass, they should at least guarantee you get 90% of the collection from that expansion, if not 100%, because let's be real, that 10% missing is 4-6 epics, and a the same amount of legendaries, which if you disenchant every single duplicate you get in that big bundle of cards you just bought... yeah, you get to 92-95% of the cards, and are left with just heavy costing legendaries to craft/get...

If I pay for a game from an AAA company, I expect my bucks to mean something, and get the entirety of the game (No DLC included, which in this case would be true, since midway between expacs we get a "DLC" of sorts...

They not only messed with the tavern pass and the reward tracks, but the game is unstable as hell right now, with constant disconnects (at least for me and a couple other guys I talk to), the lack of info about everything, and (really don't know if this was talked about) some people didn't get the 10 first packs Pity timer since they unlocked the free legendary at the reward track (happened to me... and other poor guy).

I know they will sort it out, they always do, because they know they are going to flop and got the answer ready to pop... but a measly 1350 gold at the end of the, F2P affordable (at least as of now without knowing how much the seasonal events are going to bring in terms of XP), reward track, it's not gonna cut it.

They also spoil pack openings, since you'll get "Class Collector" achievements and such the moment you open a pack, before hovering over anything.

Not sure how easy those are to fix, though.

  • New Priest Minion - Blood of G'huun

  • New Priest Minion - G'huun the Blood God

    Pain (Masochism) cards for priest?

It's very rare on flavor, but I think that on the mini expansion some kind of combo will rise with it.

Maybe something like, make damage to the enemy hero for every damage your hero take this turn, like Hidan if you got the reference, and then you can make a powerful heal.

    Feedback:

    Show Spoiler

MenacingBagel - The card itself is okay (minus the grammatical error of "murloc" instead of Murloc), although it isn't eligible for the comp as Murlocs are a tribe associated with Shaman.

Wailor - Seems pretty solid overall.

DavnanaKillder - Murloc Gardener would be my favorite of the three cards (I quite like it), although I'd pick a different word other than "Murloc".

Linkblade91 - Seems fine to me. 9 mana Corrupt cards are an interesting field to experiment with, especially in Druid.

TheHoax91 - I already mentioned that the card isn't eligible before. I do agree that this theme is a bit limiting, but you know what they say, limitations breed creativity.

FungusABao - I don't think "instead" is necessary since I think I would rather have the 7 damage since that at least might do something before getting hit with Shadow Word: Death.

BloodMefist - I think I'd prefer the second option, if only because despite existing precedence, discarding from your opponent's hand without counterplay may get some negative votes.

Arkasaur - Oh hey, it's you! The card seems pretty well made, although it also seems a bit too derivative of Dunk Tank which is in the same exact set.

Neoguli - I love how creatively you used the Corrupt mechanic, although it seems nearly impossible to activate in a regular game since it wants you to basically never play any cards. You'd need to lose so much tempo for this effect to become good, and a 4/4 with Rush won't be enough to get you back in the game. It also doesn't really suit Mage who likes to sling spells.

KANSAS - Love the flavor of Zookeeper, and the effect is a creative use of the Corrupt mechanic, although the high-RNG nature of the effect might not be favorable to some voters. Even though it isn't eligible because it's Neutral, I do quite enjoy Small Frog for being simple but neat, and I quite like the art as well.

Devil's Devil's Advocate (yes double Devil's advocate):  Datamining causes more emotional issues than the statistically stability from the information it provides.

It's just amusing to me as someone who has worked in the software industry for almost a decade, you don't have clients generally who datamine our software.  When we release a new version or a patch, we just...do.  People then provide feedback, let us know about bugs, etc.  And the cycle continues.

But datamining is like sneaking a peak at your christmas presents, finding out your parents DIDN'T get you a Nintendo 64, and then throwing dog poop on the christmas tree.  They still gave you presents, maybe not what you wanted, but it was still *something*.

Yes, we do get customers who get upset or angry at a feature being added/removed or not working properly.  But in a business environment *most* of the time, it's pretty professional in the way they communicate this.

Yet gaming in general, combined with datamining somehow ends up with a vitriolic, caustic community that will do everything from drop F-Bombs, curse the company in charge, threaten people, and attack anyone with opposing viewpoints.

  • Hearthstone's Game Director Responds to the Rewards Track

So, what's the point of defending the current system's reward value in your last official response, like there was nothing wrong with it, without additional details, when you had it planned to compensate with events xp? You admit only just now that we should be getting more (not even directly). Of course they aren't going to admit that those 'unsaid factors' are just their Plan B in case we riot, and them not providing any details about those events right now just confirms that.

Also, we had those events before, we got bonuses for them as well, and we knew exactly what we were getting. How are we even going to compare those to XP? Better skip all those comments that 'we'll end up getting more than before', please, and focus on being more honest and transparent with those statements.

This second response does not put me at ease at all, despite that gold change which was a really bad design from the start.

  • Blizzard Screwed Up With the Rewards Track - A Letter to Hearthstone

For the archievement thing, I guess it's because some archievement give XP or pack/card so they let us the joy of clicking on the "get the reward button". But the archievement page is so messy that event this is not funny since you have to find it accross a lot of things you don't care. It should directly have a button 'claim" when you open the page for the free stuff and like demonxz say get the archievements directly.

    BUT:

They also should have included a description of what you did when you get the popup saying it was earned.

I do not agree, I don't want to get spoiled in my game when a popup shows and say "hey, archievement for winning a game" when you are still looking your battleground last epic battle. Maybe it could be ok if the archievement didnt pop until we saw the end of the matches but actually i'd rather get a popup with a text i don't understand.
